I have a 2012 Maxima SV. I was experiencing the EXACT same issue. However I had never changed my transmission fluid and had 160k on the transmission. Started whining and slow down when i pressed gas pedal, especially on very hot days. The dealer told me that the tranny was done. I figured why not try it at this point. I had them completely drain all the old fluid out the tranny and replace with new nissan cvt fluid. The Problem stopped immediately and I am at 189K with no tranny issues at all. The manager laughs everytime i bring it in for a oil/filter change. Thank You Jason for this video. Just wanted to circle back and post this to the community since this video really helped me out at the time.

There should be "CVT Owners Anonymous", basically a support group for all of us emotionally and mortally wounded from this temperamental transmission. Bottom line, which you will see in all the comments, you need to do a drain & fill of the trans fluid every 30-40K miles, at least 4 quarts (~4 liters). The goals is, at the least, to cycle in fresh CVT fluid to ensure it continues to meet factory specs. In most vehicles, especially Nissans, CVT Fluid will be mostly burned up and failing by 50-60K miles. If you don't do a big change out of CVT fluid by then, you're asking for trouble, including having to change out 100% of it all at once, which is not easy. CVT fluid fails fast and hard because CVTs run hot. It takes a good amount of friction to keep the steel belt from slipping, and with friction comes heat. Also, be aware that CVT fluid serves three functions: hydraulic action, cooling, and lubrication. When it burns, it can't properly serve all the functions. When you hear the classic CVT whine, that's usually fluid starvation. Anti-foaming agents are spent and you're getting foaming and cavitation. When this happens, the hydraulic action begins to fail, and along with it, cooling and lubrication. When your CVT is slipping and shuddering, that's usually means the anti-friction additives are out of tolerance making the belt stick or slip...or both...depending on speed and RPMs. Anyway, too much info, just change your trans fluid often with properly rated fluid. If you have a Nissan and it says NS-3....use NS-3.

i own a 2012 Nissan Teana here in Asia, is more or less same as Maxima/Altima, around 120k km just out of warranty the CVT started to acting weird, whining and slipping... Nissan diagnosed an imminent complete failure was about to happen, and the only solution they offered was a new transmission priced around 4,000$. I did my research and find out many problems and weakness of this transmissions. Major problem is the temperature, are very sensible to heat! Consider where I live we having 30/40C' all the time and for any reason Nissan equipped their CVTs with the most useless cooling system ever. The CVT fluid should never gets over 90C' during operations, in our whether actually the normal operating temperature were never less then 90C'. Another problem is a sort of bad flowing of the fluid on it's way back to the transmission pan, this bad design causing the fluid to foam up in the pan. Once the fluid foamed up it will deteriorate faster by oxidation deliver bad lubrication and loosing his ability to stands frictions and temperatures. This problem can't really be fixed, however I found out how to live with it. The foam cause the fluid to deteriorate faster, so I shorten the interval between fluid changes. Here what worked for me at the time, I throw away the useless transmission cooler from the factory and I replaced with a good aftermarket panel with 20 rows, connected directly on the trans lines, voiding this way also the main radiator. Placed the cooler at the front where can get the best air flow. Next I drop the pan, cleaned up very well, new fluid strainer/filter located into the pan, new paper filter located on the cooling lines, complete fluid flush with 16 liters of new fluid and the transmission was back in shape! Since that time (120.000km) i did a drain a refill at 20.000km and next 20.000 a complete service.... now I had 300.000km on the clock and the CVT it's still doing great! Hope this helps and sorry for loooong text.

I didnt see the results of the test until my nearly an hour drive later to a friends house and my car bucked forward after i hit the gas at a stop light turn green and then bucked more after it maintained the power turning left and then it wasn’t getting acceleration much at all when i tried it to use the gas. So i had to pull over to the shoulder. I put 1 quart of cvt fluid in the car and it moved forward a bit after i let go of the brake pedal in gear but after i had to stop to let traffic pass and then let go the car wasnt moving and i tried the gas and it just revved the engine so i chose to shut the car off again. Jason, thank you for posting this video. I recently traded a 2012 Acura RDX turbo. I was told it needed new front axels. Instead of dropping money into fixing the issue, which was showing no symptoms, no vibrations and no shaking I was starting to become paranoid listening to every noise and ended up trading it in for a 2016 Nissan Murano SL AWD. I'm hoping I didn't make a mistake as it only has around 36.000 miles which is still low for 2016. I have no idea if the fluid was drained and changed so would it harm anything to take it to the dealership to have it done even if it was already done? I'm guessing the Honda dealership made out with the exchange. I wish I would have found this video beforehand. I wasn't looking for any particular vehicle but have always had an SUV. I test drove a Pathfinder as I used to own a 1999 1/2 however due to the increase in size I found it to be too large for me. They had a Murano sitting there which I never really gave much thought or ever researched. My sister-in-law drives a Nissan Rogue so I never gave it a second thought. After the test drive, I liked how solid it drove and seemed to get decent gas mileage. I don't regret the purchase because I like the vehicle and certainly want to avoid any future unforeseen consequences at all costs. Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.

Hey Omar! Glad to hear you got some piece of mind. This issue drove me insane for a long time and that’s exactly why I made this video to help out others. Just to clarify- it’s not that your transmission oil is low. It simply needs to be changed. Take your car to a mechanic shop and they have equipment to drain it entirely and than fill it up with the correct transmission fluid. 6 quarts worth of fluid will cost you around $130 with tax. Labor for an hour or so will probably cost you a little over hundred dollars. All said and done it shouldn’t cost you anymore than $300 if you bring it to a shop. If you can do the work yourself you’ll only pay for the oil. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi Jason, Thank you for the video. My Nissan Murano SL 2010 started making the winning noise (which I thought was because of probably less steering fluid - which was not the cause). That day, the acceleration was a little weird but not too bad for a 40 miles speed limit road. Eventually, after a stoplight, the vehicle wouldn't move an inch and I had to tow the vehicle to my mechanic to see what the problem was. After about 45 minutes of wait in the last week of November in Dallas area, the tow truck arrived. He started the vehicle and drove it into his truck and asked me what is the problem with my SUV. I couldn't believe my eyes (maybe something cooled down and with the winning noise if moved and the tow truck guy was able to drive on top of the tow truck). So my question is - is there a chance to change the CVT transmission fluid (NS2 in my case) and get it back to work. The mechanic is going by the codes it generated that included torque1 and a few other codes and is saying to change the transmission - which will cost me about 5000 with labor - it gives 3 years or 100,000 miles on the newly rebuilt transmission. What is your advice? I bought this vehicle used about 2 years ago and don't know if the previous owner changed CVT fluid before. Why is the vehicle completely stalling after it runs for a while? Why does it start moving once it is cooled down for an hour?
@jonathandunlap41414 жыл бұрын
Your transmission does that because it's overheating. Installing a transmission oil cooler solves the problem permanently.
@jasonsdiyforextremedummies55134 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is exactly what would happen to me. I would have to pull over and shut the car off for about an hour or so and let it cool down. Please take it to a mechanic shop and change the transmission fluid. Come back here and let us know if it worked out! Really hope it works out 👍

Changing the fluid isn't the real solution for Nissan CVTs. The problem is the transmission is overheating and the only permanent solution is a transmission oil cooler. Old fluid overheats faster but the source of the problem is grossly inadequate cooling in the system design.
