A video showing building and painting of two old school Tamiya classics, their 1/35 Quad Gun Tractor and the 1/35 British 25 Pdr Field Gun for my current diorama project 👍.......BTW, this was a bit of a rush job as time at the bench is still limited by more pressing family commitments and I've noticed a few minor niggles that I'll rectify when I get to work on the diorama base for this project. I also forgot to mention in the video that the stowage rack on the rear of the tractor cab was scratch built using strips of styrene.

When I was a boy, Edinburgh Regional Transport, the bus company that ran the maroon city busses had a Morris Quad Tractor which had a crane added to the back to recover broken down bases. I can remember 10 year old me in 1981 getting hugely excited seeing it tow a No.61 down Princes Street to the bemusement of a nonplussed dad.😊

I bought this kit in 1985 and absolutely loved it. Tamiya kits were a revolution back when they first came out, compared to the crappy local.stuff, they were inspiring and easy to build

The star on the bonnet looks weird to me. It feels like the point should be towards the windshield, not the radiator. I could easily be wrong, I often am. It just looks odd.

It's probably because the bonnet slopes steeply. On, say, a Jeep it would look normal.

Very nice job! I picked these kits up when they first came out(and still have them) in the 1970s as a kid while visiting relatives in the the UK. I particularly liked the Quad which is quite accurate compared to one being used around a wrecking yard near me here in Canada until fairly recently.

The quad tractor has always struck me as odd; it's a tall silhouette on the battlefield and I've never seen on with an MG mount. Yes, I know towed artillery usually isint up front but the situation can change rapidly

A great build and an interesting subject CWM! Just the right amount of weathering too. A question though - did you apply a clear coat before weathering, or did I miss something? Do you think a clear coat is necessary? I am a bit of a green modeller, and I notice that some swear by it, while others don’t think it is needed. Anyway, another great build, and hope to see more. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺!

Thanks......I'm a no clear coat guy under decals but that's just my personal preference as I think neither point of view is right or wrong. However saying that I do use a semi-gloss or matt coat if its desirable to achieve a finished look 👍

Very good. I worked on this gun when I was in the army ( many moons ago now ) but not the Quad. I only have one very small question to ask...where is the cam netting ?? I notice most modellers will build a fantastic looking model but leave off a very important part. The Cursed camouflage netting and associated cam poles. Anyway bar that it is a very good looking modal sir.
@CWModelling
@CWModelling 10 ай бұрын
Thanks......given the lack of period photos found showing camo nets mounted externally on the tractor, my guess would be that they were transported in a separate vehicle as part of a gun battery column 👍🏻
@maxclickenhof1049
@maxclickenhof1049 10 ай бұрын
@@CWModelling I found a few photos but they were mainly for the 8th Army in the Desert but they do show them. There would be two nets. One for the gun and limber ( carried on the gun trail or on the top of the limber ) and one for the tractor. Anyway it does not matter, it's is a very find model sir.

Awesome job! I didn't know that you could use regular tamiya cement to attach the PE? I always used thin-medium CA glue.
@CWModelling
@CWModelling 9 ай бұрын
Thanks.....it only really works for large flat surfaces, it melts the plastic and you can bed the PE in to it but like CA glue it can get knocked off if you're not careful👍

One thing which I do not understand. If the box itself says 'Canadian" and it is known that the units were used by the British commonwealth during WW11, why do you have it with American insignia. Thank you.
@CWModelling
@CWModelling 11 ай бұрын
The stars are Allied Forces air recognition insignia used on all allied vehicles towards the end of the war and are not to do with the US Army 👍🏻

Very similar to the invasion stripes on the planes it helped to avoid any confusion from the air, by keeping the US star insignia

I've been having a bit of trouble getting the AK 3rd gen to spray cleanly, what ratio of thinner do you use? Great build though, I want to pick up the quad tractor to go with my Dragon version of the 25 pdr.
@CWModelling
@CWModelling 10 ай бұрын
Cheers.....its a finicky paint that took a bit of getting used to I know.....not sure of exact ratios but a bit north of 50/50 with thinner seems to be a good starting point as some colours need a bit more and some a bit less👍

Ian, when you are constructing buildings and roads from foam for 1/35 scale, what formula do you use for your conversion? Or have you been doing this so long you can just "eyeball it"?
@CWModelling

Its mostly eyeball based on a figure or vehicle for some sense of scale and proportion 👍🏻

Can you tell me does the Tamiya cement really stick the photo etch? would really like to know as I have just purchased their new kit with all items together. Regards Barry
@CWModelling
@CWModelling 10 ай бұрын
The Tamiya cement doesn't stick the photoetch but it does melt the plastic which you can then push the photoetch in to..... It works best on larger flat surfaces but its still better to use CA glue for smaller details. Be aware though that sometimes the photoetch can come away from the plastic so I give the photoetch a rough sanding on the side facing the plastic👍

How on earth are you able to glue PE with Tamiya quick cement !
@CWModelling
@CWModelling 16 күн бұрын
It only really for works for flat pieces but basically the TET melts the plastic and you push the PE in to the melted plastic. It also helps if you rough up the PE with sand paper. It can occasionally come loose or get knocked off but no more so than CA glue👍
Be careful where you tread - 1/35 WW2 diorama
