Possibly the best Cyanotype video on KZbin. Simple. Straight to the point. You have numbers for each recipe. the demonstration was great. The print turned out really good. You can see it go from blue to black before your eyes. Its the video I go back to whenever I haven't done it in awhile.

Something that I would like to point out is that the solutions don't become light sensitive when you mix them, the FAC (Ferric ammonium citrate) is light sensitive all the time but by mixing it with the other solution (potassium ferricyanide) it becomes blue were light hits it. Therefore the FAC should be kept away from strong light sources regardless if its mixed or not with the other solution. That's why you can coat paper with the FAC expose it and then later "develop" by applying the other solution.

I have been doing Salt prints and just recently started Cyanotypes. I have been toning with red wine and coffee and having a lot of fun doing it. Oh and the red wine gives a nice purple.

You’ve got your 50th subscriber, so please make some more videos. You are exceptional at explaining what you are doing, with no "ers" or "ums" you would have got with me. I think it’s brilliant for the 'art' of creating something photographic that younger people are seen to be going beyond "taking an interest". I think this is possibly one of the best first videos I’ve seen, the only other one that I think is on par with it is another by a young lady photographer who ended up only making the one.

Hey Lauren, love the tones you got on these prints. I use hydrogen peroxide to reverse paper negatives into “prints” - I’ll try using it like you are. Are you using 3% hydrogen peroxide or something stronger before you dilute it with water?

Brilliant video. Wondering why your negative has a pink tone to it? A lot of the sites I've looked through use either a plain B&W or they are printed with yellow tint after having a specific cyanotype tone curve applied. Can you please tell me what difference the hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate make in the process (as other tutorials I've seen have skipped these stages)? Also, what printer/media did you use to make the digital negative? The resulting print was incredible!

Sodium carbonate. You can usually find it in stores near laundry detergent or bleach. Sold as Super Washing Soda.

I’m working on cyanotype and toning with black and found your tutorial very helpful! I’m assuming that I didn’t allow my print to bake in the sun long enough because it washed out almost to nothing :( Is there paper that you’re using that you like? I bought Daler Rowney Cartridge Paper to work with.

shirley lam whoops I sent that message a little to early. 😆 I’d also try out any type of water color paper , stay away from paper with sizing starch added to them . I typically use hot press arches paper for this particular process.

great tutorial but i'm a bit confused about your preparation for mixing and coating cyanotype. i've always done this is the almost dark, as i've read that the liquid is more light sensitive until it dries. it looks like you're mixing and coating outdoors where UV is very present -- am i missing something?

Leesa Bringas , I understand the concern . When mixing the two solutions together it becomes light sensitive. Not as light sensitive as other alternative processes but yes it does start to develop if you leave it in a UV lit area. Here in this video I'm coating under a porch overhang in shade and decided for the tutorial to mix up a small solution to coat two pieces of paper. I quickly coated my paper and went inside in a room with the lights off. I blew dry the paper then exposed it right away outside. For editing purposes and shorting of the video you miss this step. If your paper is still a gatorade yellow it hasn't begun to develop. If I'm working in the studio I usually have a red light on and coat with the red light facing the ceiling. I then place my wet sheets of paper in a flat file to dry and remain safe from Light. Whatever you decided to do for your coating process , just stay consistent and record your times.

I am just starting to set up for cyanotype prints and don't understand the purpose of the Arm & Hammer soda wash. You may have told us in you video but I have a hearing deficiency and I have a hard time hearing you. I will be using distilled water if that has any bearing on your answer.Thanks in advance for your help. Tom Simonson

Hello Tom Simonson, The arm & hammer soda wash is only used for the tea toning/split toning technique. As far as doing the traditional Cyanotype print you will need three trays. Tray 1 (Water) Tray 2 ( Hydrogen peroxide ) Tray 3 ( Final wash tray with water) ****Using distilled water should be used when mixing chemistry.**** It is also a good idea to us distilled water to avoid any outside contaminates that may be in your everyday tap water. Using distilled water will help avoid bleaching out of the cyanotype print. I hope thats helpful! I know this is two years later, but the chemicals in the blue part are basically iron, citric acid, salts and ammonia. They are considered non-toxic but maybe mild irritants. The grams are dependent on how many prints you are making but it is a 1:1 ratio for the A and B solutions. The hydrogen peroxide and soda ash toners are about the same as any other bleaching agent in terms of corrosive-ness and environmental concerns. Again, the amount is based on preference, but you can see she doesn't use much. All together, I'd treat the chemistry used about like I would any cleaning supplies and make sure to be careful, away from kids and pets, and have good ventilation and gloves.

@@laurenfiebert9850 also im not sure how it would work but if you mix rust powder with the tannin water from the acorns it causes a reaction that turn it black. You couls probably use that as a colorant. Its the basis of an ink called iron gall ink that was used in the middle ages for manuscript writing.

is this a hobby? or a home based operation. If not all, but Municipalities do require permit to operate if you are using chemicals. The reason being it is safe for the community and the residuals into the drainage.

To address the chemical disposal and interesting back woods way that I did here in this video. 1. It is safe to dump down the drain with diluted amounts of water. I washed my print with 1800 ml water plus the rinse of a garden hose. Lots of water is happening. This is a iron based process as well. Although one chemical is named Potassium Ferricyanide . Cyanide is a scary word here, but it is cyanide bonded to iron. You would need to expose this chemical to extreme temperatures 300+ and very harsh acids for this to become toxic causing the iron is split from the cyanide therefore creating gas. Im never dumping fully concentrated chemical down drains or in grass. This is one of the least toxic photographic process out there.

First white tray: hydrogen peroxide "4 or 5 capfuls to 200 ml water". Red tray: sodium carbonate, a "sprinkle" or "pinch" of sodium carbonate to 1 liter distilled water. Second white tray (from pot): brewed black tea.

This video was created for a class assignment and I never imaged it to have this many eyes on me. If you are implying in your comments as a means to troll, make fun, or examine how I speak/ mis spoke. I can assure you there is no room for that here. This is a learning tool. I stand against disempowerment . I alone do not have all the answers. You must do YOUR research practice and fail to find your way yourself.
