This brings back some memories of a chemistry class in my junior year of high school. We used a similar chemistry and made a print within the 45 minute class. I borrowed a negative from a friend and made a contact print. It lasted for at least 20 years before I disposed of my lab book!

I loved this - thank you! I watched a few other “tutorials” too, but yours was my favorite - made it so approachable, materials minimal (upside-down plastic lids to pick up the solution for sponging, etc :) Makes me feel like it would be just fun to play around with, not so serious. I can’t wait til summer...

Wow is right! How deadly are these chemicals? Will they keep in a sealed jar or is there a shelf life? How do you dispose of the excess? Where can you get these chemicals and how expensive are they? I hope you don't regret me subscribing. Lol. I'm full of questions. I have seen the finished product before, but I had no idea how they did it. I think you are the only one on KZbin with a tutorial about it. Thank you so much for sharing this with us.
@EkaterinaSmirnova
@EkaterinaSmirnova 8 жыл бұрын
Good questions! 1. you can buy the chemicals online or in some art stores, just look for cyanotype. Not expensive. 2. all chemicals can be harmful, cyanotype is considered to be safe, but I recommend to use protective glasses and a mask when working with cyanotype chemicals. 3. shelf life: long in powder, long when each ingredient is mixed with water and stored in a dark place, but when they are mixed - I would not keep them for longer then a week, even in a dark place.

Hi, great video! If I want to try this in a large format paper or canvas, how can I measure the proportions of the solution? Thanks
@EkaterinaSmirnova
@EkaterinaSmirnova 3 жыл бұрын
The proportion would be the same, you just need to mix a larger amount of the solution. When you buy the materials in crystals and powders its enough to last for a very long time, so mix a little extra, however when it is mixed it doesn't have a long shelf life, but you can store it in amber bottles in a dark.

Just made a try on a quite thick linen type of fabric and it went out very well. It does take more liquid and the details are not as exact as on paper (but it could be for sure the texture of my fabric). Moreover I made this try with dried seaweed that had rather thick parts. Anyway, I am happy with the result and want to try a thinner cotton fabric next time.

Hello, thank you for the beautiful instructional video. Yesterday i tried cyanotype with the kids of my reading group, but i washed it off with water and everything dissappeared, would you know why? How long do you leave the papers exposed to the sun?
@EkaterinaSmirnova
@EkaterinaSmirnova 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, this sometimes might happen. I keep my paper exposed different length of time, depending on the strength of sun light. I watch it also when not sure, I wait till the color changes from yellow greenish to swampy greenish or brown. Then I wash. To intensify the color, add some table vinegar into the washing water. Also, pick paper that is cold press, but no smoother, as some papers are actually plastic, so they will not absorb any chemicals.

Mixing the two chemicals does not make it it uv sensitive. Potassium ferricyanide is what makes the print waterproof and blue. Ferric ammonium citrate is photo sensitive on its own and starts yellow/green and will fade to white in the sun . You could substitute the Ferricyanide with a small amount of oak tannins

You can also do it on textile, you will have to soak your cloth in the cyanotype liquid and dry it in a dark room away from the light. The colors do not fade, but get stronger instead. The textile however might fade a bit after multiple washing.

How do you rip the edges of the page?
@EkaterinaSmirnova
@EkaterinaSmirnova 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, nobody asked me this before, but edges are important! I fold my paper, use a sheep bone tool to run it all the way to make the fold very strong, then I fold the paper the other way, run my tool on the same fold again. Then I tear an inch on the fold with my hand, make that corner to stick up into the air, where the rest of the paper is still on the table. Then I start pulling the 2 sides apart carefully. If I want a rougher edge I would use my bone tool as a letter opener tool after the 1st fold. It is easier to see than explain. Maybe I make a video at some point.

Maithila Bandem hi. What I did is I went to an actual store and looked at my options. It must be a watercolor paper, well sized (meaning not too absorbent). Cold press is perfect, but you can try different textures too. I suggest you get a few types of paper and try. If you don’t have much money to spend, then I recommend larger sheets which you can cut down to A3 size (instead of blocks).

When dealing with chemicals it is always a great idea to wear gloves, goggles. I am sorry I did not do it during the demonstration.
