Even though we've since known that Genocide/Cyber City was never meant to literally take place in a city, I still think Long Version's depiction looks quite good, especially for what could be accomplished in 2004. I'm a bit of a sucker for full moons brightening up the night sky, especially when it's glowing through some clouds. Such a pleasant atmosphere to just go for a walk on, I think.

I remember asking Long Version's creator about Genocide City's background and they mentioned getting it from Spirou ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4qceKN8r9lppqM shows the SNES version but the bit at 3:51 shows the sky).

Long Version was from 2004? Gee, and I first played it all the way back in 2007 as it was essentially the first Emulator game I played, as well as the first hack I've ever played.

Even with all the new info about Cyber City, I still think this fits with the level. It's dark and grim, the instruments almost sound like they're laughing at you, it all fits so well with the final level that we could have got.

I personally think of "Cyber City Zone" as the good future version and the original Genocide City name as the bad future. We even got to see Genocide City in Sonic Forces except they renamed it after metropolis zone.
@Cretaceous1589 ай бұрын
There were no good or bad futures in Sonic 2. Just present, past, ruined present, ruined past, and ruined future, all of which went in that order.
@lionocyborg60309 ай бұрын
@@Cretaceous158 So what you mean is there were bad futures but no good futures. Would have been cool if they did have them and used Cyber City for the good future version as I said above. If Forces was better made, then that game’s “Metropolis” would have kept its original Sonic 2 name and used only used Cyber City for a liberated postgame version.
@Cretaceous1589 ай бұрын
@@lionocyborg6030 Forces "Metropolis" seems more like Gigalopolis from Sonic Chaos, which is described as a futuristic city on South Island, and its location relative to other landmarks seems like Starlight. Nearly all the zones in forces are just modified versions of gamegear zones. Also, Sonic 2's time travel was a story gimmick, not gameplay. The arsenal pyramid seems more based off of Metropolis zone's original concept, which was a pyramid with Eggman/Robotnik's base inside.
@lionocyborg60309 ай бұрын
@@Cretaceous158 interesting stuff. I remember seeing Hidden Palace or “Warp point” in that same pyramid but maybe Eggman built Metropolis on top of the palace disguised as a pyramid to hide the former further? Could be the reason why his base in Sonic Adventure 2 was a pyramid in the Mojave desert too: it was a callback to Sonic 2’s development. It is also worth mentioning that Sonic 2 was also South Island in the build that had Genocide City, the three Death Eggs (yes, 3 of them, acting as citadels for GCZ), Proto Hidden Palace, Sand Shower etc. and the zones were based on the Master System version of Sonic 1. They changed it to Westside Island for the final build.
@Cretaceous1589 ай бұрын
@@lionocyborg6030 The three Genocide cities were domes, not Death Eggs. They were much bigger. But the adventure games likely took a lot of inspiration from Sonic 2's used and unused content, like Emerald Coast being similar to Ocean Wind.

Actually, Metropolis Act 3 isn't the 3rd act. Instead, it's the remaining parts of cyber city, which was supposed to be at the end of the game which is why it's longer and more difficult

Descriptions in your help: The footage is from a hack called Sonic 2 Long Version. Genocide City Zone is based on a scrapped level from Sonic 2. The actual level was renamed Cyber City Zone sometime before it got scrapped. As I'm sure you can guess, my song was inspired by this lost level.
