All this time I thought the reason they looked weird was because of Poddleville's uniqueness. But then I learned this was actually the initial pilot produced in the 90's, an animated subject that initially only released to some festivals and school test shots in 1999, but the initial dialogue and character designs were retooled into an episode of the show proper in 2001.

It's funny, the original pilot was pretty different from the actual show, and despite this was being much closer to the rest of the series, it's still pretty different in style. I think the animation is mostly the same but the voices and some effects were changed. They did a pretty decent job at redubbing and editing for the new voices and scenes but there are a few strange occurrences here and there.

For a long time, I had wondered why the animation on this episode was so wonky and crazy but I know now it was the pilot episode from 1999. What crazy and wonderful times we lived in. Also, I notice that relative to everything else, it seems Motherboard's own design was finalized since it looks pretty much the same as it always did.

Nope, this version has updated animation for select parts and Motherboard was completely reanimated to match the rest of the series. It used to just be two blue eyes and a sine wave mouth. There's loads of changes, for example the entire intro is completely different. The pilot starts with Jackie about to eat eggs when they get sucked into their PC to land in Poddleville while this version has a completely new scene with Buzz and Delete stealing the 5 before a completely reanimated vortex that leads to where the pilot started. Also they were originally called eggs instead of pods, Digit was completely absent as they weren't thought of yet (which this fixes by adding a line explaining why they aren't there), and they mention a site named Comparaville that wasn't even in the show ever.

If you’re wondering why the animation was different in the pilot back then that’s because they used cell animation then they switched to digital animation when the official series released starting with “Lost my marbles”

I've always notice the different art style and realized a while back that it's a pilot but now that I'm watching it again I'm wondering if they were going with a slightly different premise here. There's no mention of hacker trying to take over cyberspace or motherboards virus. I wonder if they were originally just going to go with the kids trying to prevent him from destroying cyber sites or giving them more of a rogue's gallery where he's just one of several villains rather than the main one
