Hey there dude with the epic beard, this vid is worth doing again with the following changes/adds -- - Unplug from the internet before starting the upgrade - Check all them boxes especially the killing of auto bitlocking and stopping all those questions - After the upgrade, reboot, STAY OFF the internet, change all the privacy options/settings as you find prudent - Get on the internet, do a Windows Update, reboot and behold --- Glory! Massive thanks for putting this out there, saves a mountain of e-waste, most certainly. Found this channel as a YT recommend, love the video, love the channel, subscribed!

Rich, even though several videos recently came out about "installing 24H2 on unsupported HW", I use YOUR videos as the reference - they are clear, concise, and entertaining. I'm quite a fan of your "Potato" e-waste machine! Yet again, Rufus proves its value as a fantastic FOSS utility! About the Core2Duo thing... I have several e-waste Core2Duo machines (Dell Optiplex 760, E8400) around here. They were built like a tank! Been running Linux on them for years, but alas effective with Enterprise Linux 9 (RHEL, Alma, Oracle, Rocky) the CPU must be x86-64-v2 which is Nehalem or newer. Soon, those Core2Duo machines will join my Celeron 300, Athlon, and others collecting dust in my garage.
@Nick_R_24 күн бұрын
Yes, Core2Duo gets along ok with Ubuntu 22.04. Although my E8400 is a bit slow with that edition. It was faster under 18.04 and earlier. I've yet to try the Q9650 upgrade, but without x86-64-v2 compatibility, that may be another dead end.

Secure Boot is an option with UEFI, so you CAN still install your OS in UEFI mode, without secure boot enabled as I do this all the time. Keeping it active MAY activate Bitlocker during install and encrypt your boot drive, which can hammer overall performance... though that's largely dependent if TPM is enabled which i keep off also. You can still use BitLocker on other drives, or external drives, with out issues with these motherboard features turned off or missing.

OK, I guess I can stop upgrading my core 2 duo now.. One has to be very careful when doing this on "unsupported" hardware as I found out. I updated three desktops from Win10 to 24H2 and 2 work well, ONE does not. It slowed the PC down to the point it was unusable. There's anecdotal evidence out there that Microsoft has slowed the distribution of 24H2 as an upgrade due to "issues" to give themselves time to fix it. If you do this upgrade make sure you make an image of your drive first so you can revert back if necessary. Fortunately for me I did that and it saved my bacon!

Everything worked for me when installing from USB boot, but the internet requirement/local account didn't work without extra steps when installing from Windows. If you are getting the same network requirements to install, - hit SHIFT-F10 to enter command prompt, - type OOBE\BYPASSNRO - PC will reset and it will then display an option to skip network connection. After that, it will then let you create your local account. Also: +1 on the epic beard! You should do a video of you trimming that 🤣🤣 Mine is about the same length, just an absolute mess.

I prefer to get the Windows ISO file from the Media Creation Tool since it includes all languages, regions, and iterations from Windows Core, to Enterprise and everything in between, and you can choose all of those things during install. The ISO file isn't that much larger (if at all), but modifying/debloating it tends to make it larger for some reason, but any 8GB USB stick will still work.

On a VM I install Windows 11 three different ways. First was the normal method that Microsoft wants you to do which took the longest and you had to babysit it for more than I wanted. Then I tried Rufus (v4.5) and it worked but there was a lot bloat software left behind but didn't take too long to install. I then used Chris Titus' de-bloat script that can also rebuild a window ISO called MicroWin (You can use Rufus to put it on a USB, or Ventoy) and it strips out a lot of apps in Windows that people never use, while also streamlining the install in about 5 minutes, and it also allows you to install it on unsupported hardware.

I agree these requirements are stupid and I am curious what they will do in 2025 when the majority are still running Windows 10. My system doesn't have a TPM and I have an i7-3930K CPU which still performs well on modern games. Surprisingly my Alienware Aurora R4 still does a good job in that aspect with a GTX-1080. My system is from 2012 and would run circles around that OS. I have a modern potato ASUS laptop that is supported with a Pentium in it and barely runs KZbin. That potato struggles and yet it's supported and my older system is by far more powerful and not supported. Thinking about that makes these requirements sound even more stupid. Dropping windows security support in 2025 leaves a ton of PC's vulnerable to security issues. Being able to install Windows 11 to get security updates is better than no updates. Sure the TPM 2.0 helps but dropping all security updates is madness. Better to have something than nothing at all.
