"Laughter in the Rain" is a song recorded by Neil Sedaka, composed by him with lyrics by Phil Cody. It includes a 20-second saxophone solo by Jim Horn.[1] Cody reports writing the lyrics in about five minutes after smoking marijuana and falling asleep under a tree for a couple of hours. In the USA, "Laughter in the Rain" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 1, 1975 (it was his first single to top the Hot 100 since 1962).[3] The song spent two weeks at the top of the adult contemporary chart.
The song was likewise a major hit in Canada, reaching number two on the pop singles chart and number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song was also released in the UK where it spent nine weeks on the Singles Chart, peaking at No. 15 on June 22, 1974

It was a rainy Saturday afternoon in Germany and my "girlfriend" and I went to the library. We were both in seventh grade and in love. We went to the library to hang out. We carved our initials on one of the desks with our pens and drew a heart around it with - I love you. Then we went to a record store and bought this record as a 45 single. That became our song and I can literally still feel her hand in mine and the raindrops falling on me when I hear that song. Her name is Manuela O. and I can still hear her laughing in the rain after all these decades! Thank you Manuela for your love, friendship and a perfect afternoon. We've been married for six months. We met again.

Masterful songwriting from Mr Sedaka. That clever key change up a minor 3rd for the choruses combined with the lush harmony vocals really lifts the choruses. A smooth, surreptitious re-entry back to the original key for the verses. The man really knows what he's doing. Makes today's pop writers look like amateurs...

1975 the year, met a girl, we decided to take a walk. That walk turned out to be the best day of my life. When we started the walk it was a sunny afternoon, that was about to change when we heard the sound of thunder. The heavens opened and in seconds we were soaked. We found shelter under a very large old oak tree, the grass under it was very dry. After a bit of touching and kissing we made love. This song always reminds me of that day. Oh to be young again.

This song will always have a special place in my heart. I was 14 and fell madly in love with a boy who was 16. My parents didn't approve because I was a freshman and he was a junior. We'd steal glances and try to meet in the hallway and after school as much as possible. One Saturday there was a group picnic and I was allowed to go. It was a beautiful day with no cloud in sight. All of the sudden the sky turned gray and rumbles of thunder. Then a rainstorm followed. He grabbed my hand and we ran to his car. We were soaking wet. We didn't get in the car. He wrapped his arms around me and said "I love you". I told him the same. After he graduated we went our separate ways. We've kept in touch over the years and reminisce about that rainy day. You never forget your first love.

I can remember being ten years of age when this was played at our junior school Christmas party - and I got to slow-dance with Kathy C, making all of the other boys envious. After the party, my dad picked me up and as we walked into the warm house, my mum was decorating the Christmas tree with my sister - and the Perry Como Christmas special album was playing on the radio-gram. It's a sweet memory of the innocence of childhood.

I fell in love at 18 but it was away from home in Banff 🏡. I often wish I could see him one more time . We reconnected in Spring of 2013 . We were both single and likely he still is . It was as if no time passed after not seeing one another for 34 years . He created a safe space for me after a tragedy . The summer of ‘79 and a few weeks in the Spring of 2013 are two of the happiest times in my life . The first cut is truly deepest . The last one hurts , too .

r.c. Longfox: Yes, they sure were! Last decade where you could still catch some good music on AM radio. Ah, how I remember riding around in the old Plymouth Fury III my dad had handed down to me (which only had an AM radio; later, I installed an 8-track tape player 😊). I would go for a ride when I wanted to smoke a joint (couldn't do it in the house, of course; my dad once caught me smoking a joint on the front porch and freaked out!). I had me some very pleasant drives, catching a nice buzz and just digging on the radio. And the variety of stuff they played was just incredible! From Sedaka to 10cc to Marvin Gaye to...no boundaries or limits, just a lot of good tunes. Good times!

I also ask myself what has happened to music throughout the last two decades? Has it become so difficult to compose gorgeous romantic songs?

Life then is easier than now. It reminds me of my parents & grandparents when they used to play all neil sedaka songs everyday at home like a mantra. But I enjoyed listening to it too. Even up to these days. It's Timeless. Thank you fo sharing your talent to the world Neil Sedaka. God Bless your good heart.💖
