I was just a baby when this movie was made. I see a lot of pre CSX and NS in this video. I can only imagine. If the PRR had merged with C&O. And the NYC had merged with the N&W. in 1961.

All that computer hardware was designed for the NYC System equipment. When they merged w/the PRR, they found out the PRR used incompatible computer hardware. The result was thousands of misrouted cars, lost shipments, generally a gigantic mess!

In the mid-sixties, this yard lost a season's worth of potatoes, from Northern Maine. It took literally weeks to find the missing freight in Selkirk Yard; by then, the crop was ruined. It was the last time that potatoes were shipped by rail..

@@icedudesk8 I believe it. Penn Central was responsible for more traffic going to other railroads, or more often to the trucks, than any other!

what did you expect. the PRR could never RUN a rail road and had been losing money since 1946. the problem is the PRR men ran the show at Penn central. Al perlman never got to run much of any thing at Penn central. Hint Al perman was one of the Best CEO in rail roading

I saw this once years ago at British Rail's Beckenham training centre as we were learning about stuff abroad and this gem turned up and the instructor kept on interjecting on how Tinsley was faster, did more cars and stuff and none of us listened much. Britain abandoned hump shunting once the coal traffic disappeared focusing on intermodal containerisation but this too took a major hit when Tony Blair abolished the very efficient Railfreight network where you could have a container delivered literally next day anywhere in the UK and the traffic put onto the roads :(

Out of curiosity, was the system based off an existing architecture like the GE-600 or IBM S/360 or was it entirely bespoke?

I watch the Selkirk Hump go from this to only one man having to work that same position. it was fun to work the Selkirk hump in the old days. Wow no safety glasses or vests!
