Cyberpunk 2077 Overdrive Mode - Ray Tracing Comparison
Ultra, Psycho and Overdrive Settings, with a variety of Balanced, Performance and Ultra Performance DLSS at 1440p. Lens Flare and Chromatic Abberation turned of in some scenes.
Even with real-time ray tracing still being in its infancy, I believe RT will become more important with current and coming generation hardware, so I created this channel with the intention of covering ray-traced games. There are plenty of channels doing mainly performance comparisons, my intention is to focus on the visual aspect and make the differences more obvious to viewers through my videos.

Even if the video is uploaded in 60 fps, I did not magically get 60 fps with a 3080 in path traced Cyberpunk. It was hard maintaining 30 on anything but performance/ ultra performance in more complex scenes. Good enough for static comparisons though.

I have a 3080 (though a 12 gb version) and am getting 60+ avg on 1080p ultra, RTO, DLSS Quality. Though I play at 2k DLSS balanced ~40 fps (with a gsync specific monitor though too).

Best real time raytracing/pathtracing youtuber out there for comparisons. Knows exactly what scenes benefit the upgrade from rasterization and showcases those scenes beautifully. If you haven't subscribed then DO IT!

In some of these the jump from Psycho to Overdrive is like going from low/medium to ultra, wasn't expecting it to be that significant. Especially liked that segment that starts at around 2:50. For the brave souls out there, someone made a mod that lets you increase the amount of light bounces and rays per pixel for even greater visual fidelity(with diminishing returns in some cases) and it butchers the framerate even further.

Besides a few artefacts I've seen on stuff like fences here and there, it's basically a lighting model that works for everything... indoors and outdoors. Geometry compression like Nanite recently also seems to handle foliage and transparencies... If lighting, geometry, and material all gets close enough to 'solved' on PC during this generation, then the PS6/Xbox Series Y generation will finally be all about pushing physics and AI

I wish they would make a good skin shader, not that plastic lowpoly characters with normal maps, instead of displacement geometry shadows. Normal maps can't cast shadows, hence characters look like 2010 games

artifacts are mostly caused by DLSS performance/ultra performance. Lower resolution = less rays = more artifacts

Even though it looks amazing with path tracing and I'm very glad that a complex geometry game like CP2077 has received a feature like this (unlike Q2 RTX / MC RTX path traced which lacks complex geometry... although still looks incredible), I still think that devs had done a great job with faking GI in some scenes so that the difference between no raytracing and overdrive isn't that much in some environments. But one can clearly see that it really depends on the situation. That shopping cart loaded with trash looks just phenomenal in overdrive. Thanks for the comparison.

I ran into very great scenes. For example when I went to Judy’s the sun shined on my back and I saw my shadow in front of me as the light came through the door. I tried with Psycho and there was no shadow casting. There are very great surprises what that game capable of with Path Tracing, sometimes just feels “right”. Edit: RTX 4080

Some times the difference is subtle, other times it is night and day. However, the overdrive mode brings a kind of visual consistency which is transformative and really increases immersion and believability of the world.

It's not exactly an "upgrade" if you need a NASA pc to run it at 40 average FPS. I miss the days where games were optimized and beautiful for its time.

Fantastic comparisons here. Simple and to the point. Path Tracing is really transformative in some scenes, even when compared to Psycho RT. Crazy stuff! Hopefully this will be the norm in another 5-10 years!

Great comparison, it shows the difference can both subtle or dramatic depending on the scene. I only have a 2080ti but I’m playing at 1080p dlss performance mode with 40 fps to use overdrive. I prefer blurry good graphics to sharp bad graphics and overdrive looks amazing.

It is INCREDIBLY promising for the future to see CP2077 improve this much from what's essentially a bolted-on implementation of pathtraced lighting. It grants the game a shockingly realistic look. There's quite a few phots that could easily have been a photo of some dingy city somewhere.

The thing about realistic lighting is that it makes all the other janky parts of the game like low res geometry, textures, and bad NPCs stand out way more

Nanite effectively solves geometry. Path tracing solves lighting. Its heavy rn but visual quality might actually be entirely art driven soon enough! Hopefully we can move onto higher framerates, cleaning up artifacts, and physics/ai

Well the more GPUs get ray tracing cores the more capable performance will be for ray tracing. It's just a matter of time when they decide to shrink raster performance and increase ray tracing performance. It's gonna be cross gen waging in next few years until raster is totally phased out.

Dude, your videos still are about the best comparison videos for RT out there. Your work is excellent! THe only downside I see to ray tracing, and path tracing, is that somehow the picture seems a bit blurry. But that's normal, as light tend to be more realistic, and thus object's edges are a bit less bruntly defined.

I’ve been waiting for this! More than happy to provide footage from my 4090 as I’m currently recording it for my kill count - and even then I’m only getting 4k60 with DLSS performance. 1080p with DLAA only gets me 55…!! Crazy.

Will have to accept limiting framerate to 30fps and more agressive DLSS upscaling on demanding stuff like pathtraced Cyperpunk. But if people like this video, it works I guess :p A 4070 might be worth it just for higher VRAM and DLSS3 frame generation.

DLSS3 is a game changer for offline play, but when I have to record at a locked 60 for my external ProRes recorder (BMD Video Assist 12G HDR) then I can’t use DLSS3… so performance mode at 4K it is, and even then I’m dropping into the low 50s in the city. However, it looks phenomenal! What will the 5000 series hold I wonder!

@@RayTracingRevolution That would definitely help if you wanted to play the game yourself. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. DLSS frame generation degrades picture quality slightly so this actually works out better for just watching a KZbin video.

Overdrive looks very natural and realistic, but only in a camera sort of way, with stark contrasts. I mean even if you correctly trace the path of light, albeit backwards, you still have to decide in the algorithm the reflectivity of surfaces as well as maximum bounces - both will impact the contrast of the scene. We're still living in an SDR era that's trying to look like HDR. Our own eyes would adjust much better to different brightness levels than cameras, anyway. Whenever I have capable hardware and Cyberpunk 2077, I will try to turn down the bloom and reduce the dark corners somewhat to further enhance faithfulness to reality.

It's a monumental achievement to reach this level (we had it in Quake RTX, Minecraft RTX, then Portal RTX = all of which I think were not as huge as a triple A modern title like CP2077). What surprised me the most is how well it ran on my 11900k + 3090 (DLSS Performance). Path Tracing is extremely taxing and to have it in a game this size is a huge milestone. It's still a "Tech Preview", there are some oddities (yet to watch the Digital Foundry analysis) but I spent a fair bit of time just wandering around Night City at night admiring the sceneries and how the objects are lit. Daytime though, I would say unless you have side-by-side comparison, it is not as huge of a difference in darker areas/night time.

and how well it runs when you turn down the gpu killing settings like fog and clouds. You can get 100+ fps with dlss quality at 1440p on a 3060ti just by tweaking a few of the poorly optimized settings (lots of videos around for tutorials).

The most jarring issue for me is the bloom on lighting. Even during broad daylight, emissives and streetlights and neon signs bloom like crazy, infact even more so than without path tracing, despite the fact that the overall scene is already brighter from sunlight. Hopefully CDPR can fix this, because I felt it was really distracting.

What's going on with the Psycho RT at 4:20? The interior looks way different from no raytracing and Overdrive RT, and the skin texture is very strange.

Great comparison. I actully had to turn off OD after awhile on my 4090 1440. It makes all the neon stuff too bright, and gets tiresome after awhile.

Do I need to have all the other ray tracing settings on for overdrive to take full effect? Or the overdrive is enough on it own and can provide reflections shadows etc?

I was waiting for your video on this, and I knew you wouldn't disappoint. Very nice compilation. I'm surprised how much better Overdrive looks even compared to Psycho because I never realized how flawed the basic ray tracing implementation was compared to full path tracing - but man, does it look good. CP2077 is not a great game, but a great tech demo for graphics, lol.

I have a 3070 and a 5800x and it is impossible to hit 60fps stable with those settings, I know that the uploader used a 3080, but still, why the hell do I get such lousy performance?

The game sometimes works disgustingly with RT in terms of metal and glass textures, sometimes it does something that is not necessary. I suppose it's too lazy for developers to break textures for the needs of lighting each surface, now everything works one size fits all

I can't get over how insane overdrive setting looks. Destroys pretty much any PC except 4090 and 4080 with frame generation.

Path tracing is what RTX technology initially should have been. Everybody was rushing to deliver ray tracing to gaming before hardware was able to handle it, so the first implementation turned out to be a half-arsed parody.
