Perched in the mouth of one of these metallic snakes, the night passes you by. Do you turn and take your leave or do you shuffle into the belly of best? Perhaps you do nothing but listen and wait.

*Taipei, 2118.* The rain pattered against my cloak and seeped into my boots as I stepped into the puddles of rain accumulating on the sidewalk. I looked over my shoulder, trying to make sure he didn’t follow me. I could hear the distant chatter of other people across the city as I did my best to keep my holopad dry from the rain. I checked my directions for the hundredth time, making sure I was on the right path. This had to be the road, just in the left here. I slipped through an alleyway, checking over my shoulder again. I popped out onto a road with a few other people huddled together outside of the booth. I looked up at the sign and took in a sigh of relief. In a bright blue light, it spelled out “Final frontier project: hiring crew.” I had to get myself on the starship before it left, or else I would have nowhere left to go but to them or figure out how to live on the streets. I anxiously waited as the line slowly moved up, more men signing up for the voyage. After an excruciating wait, it was my turn. “Name?” Shit, if I used my name then they would know where I was. I had to improvise. “Li Huang.” The recruiter looked up at me for a bit, before typing my name on the computer. Thank god an ID wasn’t required, shifty figures singing up must be common to the point where background checks aren’t required. “Do you have any experience with the navy, Mr.Huang?” “I have experience with mechanics and starships. I used to work at a manufacturing facility, my supervisor can back up my claim of my identity.” “Okay, then. You are aware that this journey will be flying into pirate space, correct?” “Yes.” “And you are aware of the dangers in that, yes?” “I do.” The recruiter typed a bit more in. “Report to docking bay 16 at 2:45 pm tomorrow evening. Provide identification upon entry.” The man stamped a piece of paper with official looking writing all over it, handing it to me. “Provide that to the gate guard along with your ID for entry into the starship. NEXT!” I knew a guy who had experience with making fake IDs, but that had to be for tomorrow. It was late, and they should still be looking for me. I walked out of the building and found a cozy ish alleyway that seemed pretty empty. I walked into the alleyway, opening up the dumpster. The smell almost knocked me out, but I didn’t have any other shelter for the night. I hopped in, laying uncomfortably on the piles of pointy and hard garbage. I thought about everything. How father was still gone, how ‘mother’ was still looking for me and what’d she would do if she found me. My thoughts started mixing together like the ingredients of a bowl of soup on a chilly morning, as I dozed off and wondered what tomorrow would bring.
