David's mom wished for him to be at the top of Arasaka tower, respected by everyone. It's horrible, but he really did fulfill her dream... Every single person that david interacted with respected him for one way or another, even Adam Smasher recognized the fight he put up. David was always an altruistic guy, worrying about everyone around him more than himself. First time I watched this I thought he was stupid for going in that route, but rewatching it I think Arasaka would always be after him or Lucy. He saved her.

Playing Cyberpunk again straight after show Finale, was even more traumatic, when "i really want to stay at your house" start playing on the radio or somewhere in the background.

The term here in America what she was talking about when referring to CEO's getting paid lots of money to resign is called a Golden Parachute, similar to the Golden Handshake she mentioned. Bobby Kotick is a perfect example who was centered in a massive scandel at Blizzard where he was given like $239 million dollars after resigning from his position as CEO of Blizzard after the scandel received a lot of media attention prior to them getting bought out. There are other CEO's that go throught his but this is pretty much common for those types of people in super high positions of very wealthy corporations. No matter what happens they get to walk away hyper richer than anyone can dream of.

That's the cyberpunk genre. There are no happy endings. Even in 2077's happiest ending, The Sun via soloing Arasaka Tower, it's still a bad ending because V's condition never gets treated.

I love David as a protagonist, he is a truly lost person absent a dream looking for something to cling onto for the majority of the series. When he finds something, he struggles to hold onto it while the world and his own trauma drag him down. When you add this with his addiction issues and mental instability caused by the cyberware, you get an extremely compelling character with a very realistic, albeit tragic, conclusion.

I am on my second play through after getting phantom liberty and I accidently found David Martinez jacket!!!! In the industrial part of the city I found edgrunners graffiti and a box with a shard. The shard played the dream in the first episode then said it had a warning about cybercychosis. Later i get a text from a fixer who said Falco found out i found it and because my rep was so high he wanted to talk. So we texted!!! Then he delivered David's jacket to the fixe who gave it to me!!!!!! AWESOME easter egg! I am so glad I found it on my second play through after watching the series!

The tragic thing is David actually failed to fulfill Lucy's dream. After she fell in love with David he symbolically became her moon because all she truly wanted was to be with him, "My Moon my Man". Without David going to the moon was a hollow experience that I think she really only did to honor his wish for her.

The show misses a bit of context that makes the ending feel better but it still absolutely works. I mean in the setting 99.9999% of the time this would have ended with everyone dying/fate worse than death. They were up against Arasaka in general and bit of background here they were one of the sides in a world war on their own. What David and Crew did was basically challenge a global superpower and didn't completely fail the way that they should have. Lucy wasn't captured and didn't have her mind slowly ripped apart or forced back into her old job that we saw in her childhood which also would have slowly torn her mind apart, killed her or worse. So given that context it actually makes the ending that much brighter.
