I was lucky enough to be in the studio audience for the recording of this episode, having been a fan for over 20 years at this point I was very excited! It was a fun experience, there were quite a few pre-recorded segments in this episode - all of the Samsara flashbacks were already recorded and played to us on screens between the live scenes - most of the scenes with the boys were performed live, though the recording started late and was cut short due to a fire alarm earlier in the day so they didn't have time to film everything. From memory, I think the only scene that ended up on the show that wasn't recorded live was the ending scene as they were leaving the Samsara. Robert Llewellyn and Doug Naylor came out afterwards and entertained us for a little while to make up for it. Craig Charles wasn't very well and was a bit grumpy between takes, but did his best to keep us entertained. He complained at length about the ice cream he was eating in his bunk being cold mashed potato. He also told a funny story about Star Wars: The Force Awakens being filmed in the next studio over, and making friends with the crew so they let them onto the set, and then stealing a piece of set dressing from the Millennium Falcon (I think it was Craig anyway, it was several years ago now). The opening scene with the dice rolls took several takes, and the warm-up comedian had to keep reminding us to laugh as much as we did the first time after seeing the jokes over and over again. Interestingly, the episode was filmed second-to-last in the Series XI block (XI and XII were filmed back-to-back), but was the second episode to air. Anyway, this wasn't meant to be such a rambling comment! I also wanted to say I've recently discovered your RD vlogs and have been enjoying your impressions as a recent convert to the Red Dwarf Posse. I look forward to your videos on the upcoming specials! (Unfortunately I wasn't lucky enough to get tickets this time around!)

You’re right about Craig. On a panel he mentioned that he had stolen something but didn’t specify.

This episode in my opinion adds a certain amount of weight to the 'Rimmer was brought back as a hologram to keep Lister sane' theory. Lister screams for Kryten to help him after being stuck in a room with Cat for just ten minutes. Back in Marooned, Lister did a FAR better job of maintaining his sanity despite being stuck in the room with just Rimmer for six days, with no hope of rescue and facing the prospect of either freezing or starving to death. Plus being told he he'll have to sacrifice his guitar to stay alive...

Hadn't thought of it that way.

Special Iron the funny thing is that i recently asked Doug Naylor on Twitter if lister and Rimmer are best friends. His exact reply was as followed: “Rimmer is programmed to keep Lister sane whether Lister likes it or not. Is a real friendship growing? Only time will tell.” Which upset me because WHO else is there? I mean they sleep in the same room after 32 years when there are more than 100 bedrooms onboard Red Dwarf. At some point Lister is gonna realize that Rimmer is his best friend and he’ll obviously be upset 😂. Like in “that 70s show” when Donna realizes that Jackie is her best friend when Eric asks her who her best friend is if not Jackie.

@@karonesalgado3313 I always thought that there was something strangely endearing about the fact that Rimmer and Lister always insist on sharing a bunk room wherever they live around the ship despite the fact that they maintain that they don't like each other. :)

Special Iron I love that! 😂 there’s even a bunk bed scene in “return to earth!”. I was soo giddy when I saw that!

Yes, and I completely forgot to mention it. Hopefully it'll be visible again in a later episode.

It was a bit extreme for the karma drive to have a setting that kills people if they behave unethically before it was reset

Imagine a Karma Drive being implemented in schools? Good behavior will improve your grades and make the school uniform always stay clean. While bullying students and messing up the classroom result in getting low grades and school dinners tasting like vomit.

I’ve already seen the episode but is it weird that I keep expecting Rimmer to follow up 7:21 with “with just two minor drawbacks”? I guess I’m just used to hearing that any time that statement is dropped on Red Dwarf X)

I don't even remember watching this one, its always funny watching Cat annoy the shit out of Dave though, that scene reminds me of when they were playing a board game when Lister lost his arm and Cat was going on and on and Lister just wanted him to take his turn lol

Worth noting that Samsara is the Hindu (and Buddhist because Buddhism began as a Hindu sect) cycle of reincarnation in which the cosmos shunts one into a particular sort of caste-based existence based on one's adherence to the Dharma (religious duty) assigned one by birth in a previous existence. Born into the warrior caste? Be a good warrior and be elevated next go around! Just don't try to behave contrary to your caste's dharma...

When people say morality is subjective I some how don't think they hate this in mind

I absolutely adore the shirt Lister has in the start of the ep; but I can’t find any good references of it online. I assume that Lister made it himself and that’s just adorable.

I actually have a theory about this episode! When The Cat tells Lister he has NO Night-Vision, I think actually CAN see in the dark... Just not very well! He didn't mention this to Lister because he didn't want to go to all the trouble of explaining that his night-vision worked so poorly that he'd look silly trying to see what was going on when he can see only SLIGHTLY better than Lister! Could that be something to bring up during the next Cat video?
@Cyborcat5 жыл бұрын
Frankly I just like the idea that we finally found something that his ancestors could do that he can't and he's annoyed about it. But yeah, I'll mention that--a lot of fans also like to link it to the episode where it's revealed that he needs glasses, so it kinda goes with that idea.
