Cycle Touring Alaska to Argentina | Alaska - Cycling to Valdez
Our final few days cycle touring Alaska was not without rain, sunshine, beautiful waterfalls, iconic mountains, and one final pass before our long awaited descend into Valdez. Having a few days off the bike, we explore Valdez, visit the museum, and try some highly recommended fish and chips as well as some ice cream before boarding our ferry that would eventually take us through the "Inside Passage" and down to Bellingham, Washington.

Yes indeed it was neat and saved us a ton of money! We were on the ferry for more than 4 days and there were hot hot showers, washer & dryers, and the food onboard was really good and priced very fair! We also took our own food to make sandwiches and you could get hot water from the kitchen and make your own soup, tea, and instant coffee if you had it! Good times! Thank you for following along! ~Ron

What an inspiring state, the shot at 3:00 is breathtaking. The river section was like what I expected to see more of in Alaska. It would be nice to see waysides like that more often where you camped. I bet the food tasted even better than it looked, cause it looked really good! What are you thinking to do about Canada?

Hello Sean! Alaska is something else that is for sure and honestly we miss being there. Don't miss the mosquitos, but we did miss the remoteness. Sadly just before we flew to Alaska, Canada and the US said they were keeping the border closed for another month, so at that time we bought our ferry tickets. However, there is always the Dempster Highway in Canada that needs to be explored down to the Great Divide route, soooooo you never know what is in our future. :-) Take care and happy cycling! ~Ron

Lots of beautiful pictures. What time of the year did you do the riding? Also what would you say was the most difficult thing about riding the Dalton? loneliness,all the rough terrain or mosquitos? And how much food did you pack?

Hello Eddie and thank you for the compliments! We landed and started in Deadhorse on the 25th of June 2021 and it took us 13 days to cycle to Fairbanks. This includes one rest day in Coldfoot. Since there were 4 of us, there was no issue with being lonely. We would say the road conditions itself was the toughest thing along with the headwinds we experienced. Mosquitoes are bad for sure and are the worst on the long long climbs when there are no winds. In camp or when we stopped to eat we always fired up a mosquito coil and this helped a lot. For food, we took about 6 days worth each on the plane and about a month out from leaving we mailed about 6 days worth each to Coldfoot's post office and they held it for us. For water we just filtered it the entire time, unless someone gave us a bottle or two as they passed us up. Here is a little write-up we did for the Dalton Highway - pedalpowertouring.com/general/bicycle-touring-the-dalton-highway/ Thank you and happy cycling! Ron & Petra

Great videos! Thanks! Do you guys have a published gear list or details about your bikes someplace? Thanks in advance - I am hoping to so this same ride in 2024.

Hello Peter! Appreciate you checking us out and following along. We do over on our blog, but it's pretty outdated. We will say though that your gear list will change as work your way south or the longer you're on the road. We've had several folks ask us for a video about our bikes and we have it on the list so hang in there and we'll get something posted them and possibly something about our gear. At least this will give you a rough idea of what you may need/want. One thing we would suggest though is to get your gear ahead of time and take several short trips before you take off on the big one. This way you can test and work out your gear to be sure it works or not. Take care and happy cycling! ~Ron & Petra

@PedalPowerTouring
@PedalPowerTouring 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Vinaykumar! Before we flew, the US and Canadian officials extended the border closures so at that time we committed to the ferry and bought our tickets! Our original plan was to make a left in Fairbanks and head for the border! Last summer (2020) we spent 3 weeks traveling around Alaska and seeing everything south of Fairbanks since we knew one day we would be cycling from Deadhorse to Ushuaia, so Denali, Denali Highway, and Valdez we already did in a car, but it was much better this time by bike! The ferry was a nice, but expensive addition to our adventure!

Amazing. Just a few logistical questions. With the remoteness of the area was there any cellular/GPS service at all there and if not did you have a SAT phone with you? Also, was there any places along the way to replenish needed supplies such as cooking fuel or any bike parts?
@PedalPowerTouring
@PedalPowerTouring 2 жыл бұрын
Hello 1980Dog! We are with T-Mobile and did not have any service throughout Alaska unless we were connected to WiFi. It appears that AT&T is the carrier you want when traveling Alaska and had we known, we would have picked up a pay as you go SIM from them. Alaska in general is pretty remote, but yes there are places to buy food, beer, and such. The only bike shops and REI stores we know of are in Fairbanks and Anchorage. There is a small outdoor store in Valdez with limited gear, but I am pretty sure they can order you anything. There may have been a bike shop there but we don't recall seeing one. As for fuel, we use MSR's Whisperlite International stove and since 2013 we only use regular gas from gas stations, so fuel for cooking has never been an issue. We can't really comment on the propane gas/canisters since we never really look for it. ~Ron

Thanks for all the great info Ron. It's one heck of a journey you both are on. I just completed my first multi-day tour last week, albeit it was much easier since it was here in sunny Florida...🤣. It still gave me a great learning experience. I've learned a heck of a lot from watching your journeys and experiences. Thanks a bunch sir. You guys stay safe out there. Keep rockin on...😊

@@dog-so1vj You are more than welcome and happy to hear you're out there touring. It all starts with those overnighters and weekenders! Before you know it, you'll be cycling around the world or maybe just across the US or around Europe. Just curious but where did you go in Florida?

I live in Jacksonville. My friend and I rode out to A1A at Jacksonville Beach from my house then south to St Augustine. Then over to Palatka via the State Trail system. Then over to Starke, FL and back home up along US 301. It was a 4 day 175 mile loop. It was a lot of fun. The weather was perfect. It was a hotel tour.
