Curious about how you fill your bottle from a gas pump.
@PedalPowerTouring23 күн бұрын
Hey Chris! Very carefully and super slow. However, not all pumps are the same and yeah sometimes the initial squeeze causes a mess. ~Ron

You know it is an authentic longterm review when it looks like you pulled the stove out of a coal mine. Did you notice an increase in soot when you went from white gas to regular gasoline? Coming from a canister stove (need a white gas stove for cold weather), I'm not looking forward to a lot of soot. MSR claims their superfuel will produce less soot, but I'm curious if there is even a difference for you from white gas to gasoline.
@PedalPowerTouringАй бұрын
haha true!! Trust me this stove has earned its keep and never let us down. We haven't used White Gas since April 2013. We only used Coleman White gas while traveling in the US, but once we crossed over to Europe we couldn't find it, so we started using regular gas and since then that is all we use. Even in our new stove that is all we use. We do our best to only buy ethanol free while in the US, but those times we can't get it we always pull the pump out after every use. You can try using alcohol to preheat the stove and this may help reduce the soot, but then you're carrying extra weight. Honestly keeping it clean is not that big of deal and the newer stove design is even easier than the older one in this review. Good luck and happy adventures. ~Ron & Petra

Finally a review thats not just out of the box new. I just got mine for a trip to yosemite and absolutely loved it. It certainly has a learning curve compared to a propane stove. Mine is a bit finiky sometimes though where after I get the stove going it has just a tiny flame and I'm using the coleman camp fuel. Then i figured out the shaker bit to clean it. I didn't think it would need to be cleaned after only five uses, but apparently it did cause after I shook it The flame came back to normal. Also I was wondering what repair kit do you use? And where did you get it? Amazing video. Thank you.
@PedalPowerTouringАй бұрын
Hello StogeCrazy. Many thanks for comment and for watching. Yeah you need to do the shaker bit each time before using it and if you're running regular gasoline the line needs to be cleaned more often too, but this is easy enough to do. We carry with us on the MSR Expedition cleaning kit and you can order it directly from MSR or Amazon works too. Take care and happy adventures! ~Ron & Petra

Don't like how dirty your hands get handling the stove. I've always used canister stoves that never get carbon buildup. Seems you should be able to get new canisters in every major city and they last for at least a month or more. If I had to use the whisperlite, I would keep a pair of gloves with the stove.
@PedalPowerTouring2 ай бұрын
Hey there Bill! Thank you for checking out the video. So yes this older Whisperlite seemed to get pretty dirty, but the new one does not. The new one for some reason is much easier to clean after each use as well. As for the canisters, yeah we don't think this would really work with around the world bike travel and no there is no way one canister would last that long for us. Also, the last thing we want to deal with if/when we arrive in a major city is going out and searching for fuel canisters. If you're traveling in Europe or the US, then yeah this may work, but I don't see you getting one of these in Cambodia for example! For us, the Whisperlite International is the way to go and you can get regular gasoline even in the most remote areas of the world with no issues. Nothing would suck more than that canister running out of fuel when you're cooking dinner after a long day on the bike. With our fuel bottles we can see when we're getting low and can top them off at the next station or little shack where someone is selling fuel. As for the grungy hands, nothing a little soap and water can't take care of. 🙂 Take care and happy adventures! ~Ron & Petra

Not sure if this has been recommended to you, but you would have almost no flats if you used tubeless tires and rims. It takes a bit of practice to get used to tubeless, but no patching and only rarely you have to poke a bacon strip into a hole, which is way easier than removing the wheel, tire, tube to patch. You can fix it in a couple of minutes. Tough to make that change in the middle of a tour, but check it out next time. I would never ride with tubes again.
@PedalPowerTouring2 ай бұрын
Hey there Bill! I've been using Stan's No Flat since 2004 on my MTB and it works great for that. However, I would never recommend using this for long term bike travel. One thing you would need to carry a jug of it with so you can replenish your tires every so often and I am not sure you would be able to properly fill your tires with the enough PSI for the load. The advantage of using it with my MTB is so that I can run lower pressure in the tires and not worry about pinch flatting. If you're traveling long term with tubeless tires that is cool, but nah I wouldn't take this chance, nor would I suggest this to anyone. It takes me a few minutes to patch a tire and we're back on the road. We each carry one tube just in case we get a slice (this has happened once) that can't be patched and I carry a couple dozen self adhesive patches with us. While in Pueblo, Mexico I was worried we might run out, so I picked up a patch kit that came with glue and a couple dozen patches to carry with. Also, I drilled each of our rims to accept Schrader valves so that if need be we can get a new 26" tube anywhere in the world. Thanks again for following along and all the best on your travels. Take care. ~Ron

do you just refill the bottle at car fuel stations?
@PedalPowerTouring5 ай бұрын
Hi jeorgiabluck. Yes we do just go to the gas station to fill our bottles up. If possible, we try to get methanol free gas, to help preserve the rubber and plastic parts on the pump. We also take the pump part out of the bottle when we’re done using the stove and keep the cap on.

i have had my unit for 8 years and still learned from you. the only thing that baffles me still is the proper packing in my backpack to not damage. searched the web to find a special hard case - no luck but it led me to here. Cheers and my hope you use your stove (+ one) another 10,000 times. Paul in Tucson
@PedalPowerTouring5 ай бұрын
Hey there Paul in Tucson! Thank you for checking out the video and for leaving some feedback. Much appreciated. We don't think you could damage the stove at all but you might be able to damage the pump. We have been pretty lucky (knock on wood) and have not damaged the pump, but I do pack it in our panniers so that it is protected should the bike fail or something like that. The new stove has been working out very nice and we are working it for sure. So far it's been on numerous overnighters and all the way from Deadhorse, Alaska to Panama City Panama and then from Germany to Turkey and back to Germany. Take care and we wish you another 8+ years with your stove! Cheers Ron & Petra

What are you using for navigation, maps, cyclo comp, and route planning?
@PedalPowerTouring9 ай бұрын
Hello Abba and thank you for the question. As a back up device we always travel with a Garmin e-Trex series GPS loaded with the maps of our location. Now with the invention of Smart Phones, we have been using more mapping apps such as Maps.me, Komoot, offline Google Maps, MapOut (iPhone only), and while not related to maps, we do like iOverlander for scouting out locations to camp, get water, border crossing information, and other stuff related to traveling. We may have missed something but if you go back to some of our newest videos and look under the "Description" we have added some useful information. Also, we rely heavily on getting information from the locals. Take care and happy cycling! ~Ron & Petra

The worst bridge we've ever crossed was the Astoria bridge connecting Washington and Oregon! We've cycled in some crazy places over the years, but that 4 1/2 mile Astoria bridge was stressful!
