I supermoto'd my old (2001) KLR650 many years ago and it became the perfect commuter/ripping around town bike--its like a simple scooter but has enough power to carry double, go down the freeway, and it handles like a sportbike on curvy roads. It can hit chuckholes, curbs without bending rims--its tough as nails.

i have similar, supermoto xt600e, thing is so fun, could be a little more powerfull but you know how that goes xD
@charlieward76062 жыл бұрын
@Idk__ not just the tires, you need to change your rims at least. mine also has different front suspension and brake because they get much heavier use on the road. most people also change their sprocket so they have higher top speed but i didnt i did it because the bike is mainly driven on the road, road tires a less noisy, more grippy, more economical.. they are designed for the road, plus the front wheel is smaller and wider so a lot more grip on the front. My one actually has 80/20 tires, so mainly good on road but ok on dirt but because both rims are 17 its considered supermoto converted. a real supermoto is a converted motocross bike, so mine and the OPs are converted dual sports, pretty similar but not technically the same, most people just call it as such when you have two 17 inch rims instead of 17/18 rear and 21 front
@charlieward76062 жыл бұрын
@Idk__ the is no all out sacrifice in performance, its just preference, there is advantages and disadvantages to stock, stock with road tires and full supermoto

as far as the "cops won't bother you" thing, I think it has more to do with the fact that you're in full gear with the visibility vest then the bike itself. I've seen cops pull guns on a supermoto or dual sport rider cus they didn't know it was street legal and thought it was some kid tearing up the street on a dirtbike.

Great video! The first thing I would like to point out is that people do top end rebuilds after 100 hours on two strokes. The four strokes could possibly go until the heat death of the universe without a top end rebuild. The other thing is that I think you should try to get your wheelies more towards the balance point. This helps you to keep the speed steady, or even slow down during a wheelie.

Remember the first valve check is the most importent one -my neighbor autorized mechanic My bike needed valve check every 6000km it said in the service manual. Drove it 9500km and the rocker arm failed (since i did not adjust the valves). Bought a new engine and adjusted the valves. Drove it 20 000km untill the rodbearings/piston failed. So i think its wise to say its sort of same with the yamaha yz

I know you guys won’t believe me, but my 2007 DRZ400S (liability only) cost me only $7 dollars a year to insure. That’s about $0.58 cents a month, lol. And as far as cops, I had cops come up to me to ask me how fun the bike looks. And wish they had one to rip around on. I have never experienced that before I had a duel sport. I had a GSXR and got chased and profiled all the time for being up to something all the time. Good video man 🤙🏽

I got a ktm dual sport that I use for desert racing, the most street riding I do is once in a while to work, or to ride across a small town to get to trails on the other side. The only insurance claim I had taken on it was when it was stolen, but I got it back and it was declared totaled, so I took the money and bought the bike back from the insurance for very cheap and cleaned it up a little, and now it's honestly better than before, I had some black plastic on it, now it's all orange, wich makes me happy, and also since it is a bit more beat up I don't care in the least about dropping it, it was a bit like that before from a few years of racing, but now if I crash you can't even tell by looking at it if I had just crashed. I did lowside with knobby tires once, if I were to do more street riding I would get a set of supermoto wheels and tires. And maintenance even though it's a KTM and maintenance is supposed to be expensive and often, it's not, my dad's old ktm the oil was changed like every ten races, the valves might have been checked once, and it still ran just fine when we sold it and it was 16 years old, now we both have basically the same bike with roughly the same amount of hours on it close to 150, and we've each only done a few oil changes, haven't done anything else to them, and they run just as good as when we got them.

I only adjust my valves when I have a starting issue. My 17 ktm excf 450 has had 1 adjustment and 1 piston @ 500 hours or 13,000 miles and to be honest it didn't need a new piston could have just replaced the rings. But I wanted to up the compression and have some head work done to maximize the power output. Very easy to do if you have the tools. It's been a great bike to me. Never a real issue with her. I have it set up for balls out supermoto at the moment but most of the hours and miles were done in dirt trim.

I bought my KLX300SM and was initially worried about costs...everyone said motorcycles are more expensive than cars. Insurance is $300/yr and maintenance/repairs is dirt cheap especially since some of it can be done on your own. I've dropped it a few times and it hardly took any damage. That alone makes it a great bike and perfect for beginners.

I recently added a DRZsm to the line up. Got a fair price on a used bike with all the expensive upgrades already done. After riding for a bit. I came to a conclusion. Either people complain way too much that the DRZ is gutless or my bike has a big bore kit. Well my bike motors! It pulls surprisingly hard from 75 to 95 mph. Of course it pulls really hard down low but thought it would have layed down on top. I was thinking "what are all these people complaining about? This thing rips (for a single cylinder 4 stroke). Without distinct identification on the cylinder, I can't tell the bore size or manufacturer. It's definitely kitted. An easy thing to overlook when you're excited about a new toy and haven't ridden one in years. Nevertheless. For a lower budget SM. It works very well. I've been riding it back and forth to work. 95% of the time it's raining. You can be ham fisted and not worry about lighting up the rear. Can ride super mellow if you want or get silly with it. Wet roads can get really sketchy on one of my other big bikes. A touch too much throttle on the Superhawk in the wet for instance and it's spinning all over the place. The sensation of speed is enhanced by banging through the gears. Although I don't like to run it at highway speeds for long (65-75 mph) . That's only second gear on most all the other bikes. The SM scales everything down a few notches. Definitely helps to improve your skills, especially my wet riding skills. Just watch those entry speeds in the wet. It's a lot of fun just rip it on the exit. It took a few days for my flat track style of riding to come back. I would highly recommend a SM for a second bike (if you're some sort of weirdo with only a couple of bikes). The advantages of a super light (competitively) City bike are huge. So easy to maneuver in tight areas, easy to find places to park it, mistakes are super easy to correct. The list goes on. For durability, costs of maintenance and the aftermarket community. The DRZ is a great platform to start with. I've upgraded mine a bit more with a Brembo and braided line, mirrors and a few cosmetic bits. Most of it was already there. Shed some weight off of it. Rear peg assemblies and OEM mirrors are heavy. Most of my bikes are stock or as close as possible to factory so the DRZ is fun to play with. Add, remove, change, upgrade whatever your budget allows. Cheers.👍😁

It could be because they rode a 450 supermoto. A 450cc pure race dirt bike just freak rips to all heck. However, in many states you can't plate a 450 or don't want to go through the hassle of building a street-legal 450 supermoto. The DRZ400sm is a cool bike and will always be popular. Have fun!

I've always wondered the same thing. Own a drz400sm and have no issue with acceleration even up top. Tops out at around 100 and pulls fine all the way up to that point. Only mods I've done are 3x3, jetting, and MRD full exhaust as well as remove heavy unnecessary bits.
@franktaylor76172 жыл бұрын
@@73N5H1 I only have about 3 miles to ride on the highway and then it's back roads. Getting off the ZRX onto the DRZ definitely shows how slow the DRZ is. But that fades after a day or so. The DRZ feels a lot like my Mini. I have a 1971 Mini Cooper S. It doesn't feel slow because you're constantly banging through gears to get up to speed. It's the shifting that gives the sensation of speed. Bang bang up through the gears and you're only doing 50.😆 Like the DRZ. You can carry most of that speed through the corners. My Ram and other bikes don't apply to these concepts.

@brettjohnson13932 жыл бұрын
Yeah, not ideal for sustained freeway, but if you get a 450 with a wide ratio transmission, it will do 60 at a more reasonable rpm. With Japanese bikes, that limits you to the FX like this one (or the WR), or the Honda 450X or RL (2019 or newer if you want the 6 speed). Also plenty of Euro bikes, and the 500/501 makes a great supermoto.

Supermoto has sportbike sized rims which can take trackday slicks very sticky tires, very apt to maintan lean angles and corner speeds equivalent or exceeding sportbikes, enduro has dirtbike size wheels (larger rims) with the available tire options being aggressive dirt knobbys or on/off road enduro tires. Supermoto has suspension thats ideal for aggressive pavement riding, enduro has mushy suspension better for off road but just "okay" for street. Enduros tend to be much heavier..imo a true supermoto is a motocross dirtbike converted to a supermoto via smaller rims, lowered/ re-valved suspension, and smaller rear sprocket. Motocross bikes are like 240 lbs so very very light. Enduros are made to be d.o.t. approved so have alot of epa additions that bring the weight up. Good luck getting a license plate for a motocross bike though. And theres a helluva lot more to it, there's forums all over the place.

Agree, a supermoto makes you do wheelies. Disagree, don't get enduro tires, get Street tires.

My 2021 DRZ400sm isn’t super cheap for insurance lmao. Granted, I’m a new rider and I’m only 22, it’s like $235 a month for 6 months

No you don't want adv tires unless you're doing a bunch of dirt riding. So much more fun on street tires on the street.

I'm starting to wonder if naked bikes have the same advantage because the cops here in AZ never seem to even look at me

What is the top speed on those? can you go on a highway? Here in Germania the moto should be able to go over 60Km/h 37 miles/h
@machupikachu10852 жыл бұрын
the 250's and 300's will do about 115k top speed. DRZ400 will do about 150k, 450-500's will do 175+. Most of them are not good for riding top speed for hours at a time, tho. Hope that helps. Cheers!

Hopefully next year I’ll get me that Kawi klx300sm or if Honda makes a 450 supermoto but doubt it

I don't understand why Honda has not made a production supermoto out of the CRF450L. Supermotos are the most fun type of motorcycles you can buy.

In germany the thing about the cops is tourned around. You are more likely to get pulled over with a supermoto

I can vouch for the cop part. I rode a super sport before I got my sumo and cops never mess with me while I’m out on the sumo

I heard the big check and Little John sound bite and thought. I wonder if this guy is from around the Cleveland area and then you said you were from Ohio. If you are in the Cleveland area you still having the same experience not being bothered by the cops since they started cracking down up there? I'm down in Akron and it doesn't seem like they're cracking down because I hear a lot of thumpers rolling around the neighborhood but I'm not real sure.

Unfortunately my sumo has not inspired me to do wheelies on it. I crap my pants everytime it power wheelies and I do not have a lot of incentive to learn clutch up wheelies. Not my thing I guess.

@@Gofr5 yea definitely harder to get the front up on the 701 but dude you have the proper supermoto. i have a 450 sxf and i almost got the 701
@Gofr52 жыл бұрын
@@armandhammer98 Yeah. I'm giving it more time. I feel I'll enjoy it more once I find some places to take it for some light offroading. I'd like to ultimately pair it up with a second bike, but that won't happen for a while as I also just bought a new car. Going to take a few years to build up the capital for a second bike.
