Bratko, Can you recommend top Scramblers? Something I'm very interested in, but I love my little 1980s style CB400SF. Something with retro cool and very versatile, for street/cafe culture, and very usable for offroad and hooligan stuff? You know something looks cool in kevlar jeans and flannel and leathers... Its part of the fun, looking cool too ;) Motorcycles/Cars, are emotions of Art too.

for me the most benefit, especially on a tall bike like a 690 or 701 is that the 17 inch front wheel makes the bike quite a bit shorter for not so tall riders. so with knobbly tyres you can get off road, but still have foot-down control - currently have a dr650 and wanting to move to a 690 but its just too tall - think this could be a solution

I like riding a dual sport because I enjoy off-road riding too. I had a CRF 250 Rally but just totaled it in June. I hit a deer doing 60. I tore my rotator cuff and got road rash but can’t wait to get back on a bike! I was thinking of getting a CRF300L because the maintenance is so easy! 8000 mile oil changes. The 450L is like every 600 hours To much work for me.

Honda says 8,000 mile 🛢️ changes but you would be crazy to wait that long! I just picked up a 2019 cb500x with only 500 miles and they did the oil change before I bought it I changed it again 350 miles later with full synthetic Honda oil and 1,200 miles later it needed another oil change I thought I was tripping but I even asked the dealer what they thought and they said yes I would advise changing it it looks dirty and that's no dirt riding just on the street & riding it hard yes but not excessively hard... So if anyone waits 8,000 mi you're stupid & 4,000 miles I would say is not very smart, maybe my motor was still breaking in but the manual says 300 miles we will see how dirty it gets on this next oil change... But I'm thinking about 2,500 mi oil changes... And they were out of Honda oil 10w 30 so I went with Kawasaki full synthetic 10w 40 because I live in Phoenix and it's about to be 150° so I figured a little bit thicker would be good

Bro, this...I have a WR250R and CycleCruza alllllllmost had me convinced that this setup was the way to go (he makes a pretty good case for it, and his excitement is infectious!)...until your comment. Totally forgot that one reason I ended up with the WR after looking at almost every DS/SM that was available at the time was the ease of maintenance. My previous bike was a 750cc sport bike, so I shopped the CRF450L when I was buying but the maintenance intervals REALLY put me off. Not only oil changes, but valve adjustments. Yeah you can convert these off-road dirt bikes by adding all of the bits that are required to make them street legal, but that doesn't change the service intervals. So no, my WR in stock form won't do 100+ on the highway and won't pop torque wheelies...but what it will do is rip forever with nary a grumble as long as I make sure the engine has (some) oil in it. :)

Agreed. Its crazy to say that its safer, but I went from an R1 to a KTM500 sumo and it feels WAY safer, because the speeds I am "having fun" at are about 70mph less than the R1. Also have the benefit of a bike that is 230lbs with great suspension, so I have no fear of ditching the pavement if I need to avoid stuff. You can literally go anywhere you want.

If you live in the Midwest and you can go ride miles of singletrack right off your back porch or a few miles down the road, I would prefer dual sport. But in a state like Maryland where there is no public lands to ride, Sumo is way better because you can just jump on your bike and go ride for an hour or 2 and not have to replace 3 sets of knobbies per year. I have ridden every kind of motorcycle and ATV there is and sumo is the most fun I have ever had on 2 wheels.

Honestly, I don't think one is better than the other, and it all depends on what kind of riding you want to do with it. Mostly street? Supermoto. Offroad often? Get dual sport. Though, I'm sick and tired of dual sport riders criticizing supermotos 'having street tires on dirt bikes' when most of them don't know what they're talking about.

Your #1 reason a supermoto is better is because you made your supermoto wheels tubeless? You can do that to 18" and 21" wheels too. Then you say a dualsport is better if you do 90% offroad...I feel like a dualsport is more ideal for people who spend more than 30%+ of the time offroad. If you're riding a supermoto offroad more than 30% of the time, you should probably have a dualsport. A dualsport can do everything a sumo can, just not grip in corners as well. But a sumo can't ride half the places a dualsport can. With all that being said...I have a 690 supermoto and a 500 dualsport...best of both worlds. haha

I’ve been looking at the Husqvarna FE 501 and 701 models, but I’m a bit confused by what the salespeople told me. They said that the Dual Sport and Super Moto versions are essentially the same bike model, but with different setups-like tires and exhaust systems-but is that really the only difference? Also, I’m trying to figure out which of these bikes would suit me better. The FE 501 is lighter and more agile, but I was told it requires an oil change every 10 hours of riding. On the other hand, the 701 has a longer frame, a heavier engine, and much longer intervals between oil changes-about every 1000 miles. I’ve heard that the FE 501 is more suited to off-road and trail riding, while the 701 is better for longer trips on the road. My goal is to have fun exploring the countryside and smaller roads, but not necessarily spend a lot of time on highways. I’ve heard that with the FE 501, I’d have to carry oil with me for long trips since it requires such frequent changes. I’m wondering if that’s a hassle or if it’s just part of the charm of learning to care for the bike. Since this will be my first bike, I’m not sure which way to go. I love the idea of adventure off the beaten path, but I also want something practical for getting from city to city. Has anyone ridden the FE 501 or 701 and can share some insights? Which bike do you think is better for what I want to do? Thanks!

One of the questions I was hoping you would address in this video - what is the advantage of 17" wheels? From what I can see, 17" wheels with street rubber is the biggest difference between dual sport and super moto. So what's special about the 17" wheels? Thanks
@E2Moto
@E2Moto 2 жыл бұрын
Smaller wheels, especially the front(some race supermotos even have 16" or 16.5" front), makes motards turn sharper, and most sport bikes use 17" wheels with sticky tires so with that, supermotos can also use those sticky tires. Another thing has something to do with the centrifugal forces going on with 17" wheels, plus dirt bike chassis that makes supermotos turn at a faster speed. Dirt bike chassis are also designed for superior handling.

Great video. Whenever someone does a SM vs DS video, they always compare track like pristine flat highway to backwoods single track with nothing but trees across the trail. For most of us, we got a DS because our roads are somewhere in the middle of that... gravel and rutted out, but not a pro enduro trail. If you're going to be doing any substantial miles, the YZ 450 is useless. I've gone over 40,000 miles on three different WR's with minimal maintenance. That's the reason a dual sport is better. If you only do about 2,000 miles a year like Cycle Cruiza, then the Supermoto YZ is a good choice. But be prepared for a fair bit of preventive maintenance. The other big factor is cost. This YZ Supermoto cost more than double the cost of a WR by the time it's all said and done. Also for any serious off-roading, the WR will eat the YZ Supermoto alive especially once it gets a little muddy or sandy or rough. And by the way the KTM 690 and Husqvarna 701 cost almost 15 grand out the door by the time you pay fees and taxes. That's roughly three times the amount of a slightly used wr250r. And they still require more maintenance than the wr. Regarding fixing flats and rubber, I run a Kenda k270. 50/50 tire. I get over 5000 to 6,000 miles out of a set and they still work very well in most off-road conditions. And because they are dirt bike size tires it's very easy to fix a flat with a new tube or patch compared to Supermoto wheels. By the way if you puncture a tubeless tire with a large hole you're going to have to put a tube in it anyway.

As stated in the video, if you want to tour riding a lot of miles a 690 SMC R or Husqvarna 701 supermoto, they have a street bike engine with much lower maintenance intervals. I would only get a true dual sport if I rode off-road most of the time and just need to ride street to get to the trails. If you ride street the most, dual sport knobbies wear out fast and tubes suck if you get a puncture.

@n.nikolov 2 жыл бұрын
690 (701) are far better if you are gonna dual sport them 60+% on the street...compared to the little wr250f...just have more power for the highway, the faster back roads etc...
@steveh1510
@steveh1510 2 жыл бұрын
@@n.nikolov That's why comparing the two types of bikes doesn't make much sense. Two completely different animals. I have a T 700 but there are times I much prefer the WR. Not to mention you're comparing a $13,000 or $15,000 motorcycle with a $5,000 motorcycle with two or three times the horsepower. And if you're planning on logging lots of miles then the Yamaha YZ 450 FX is not the bike to do that on for long stretches. Maybe around your city or county but not state to state. But going state to state on a wr250r is very doable with a few fairly inexpensive mods. But again if you're going to compare bikes it might as well be Apples to Apples.

Thanks! You can make the ds tires tubeless but then it would not be good for the street, the tubeless options for dual sport wheels are only meant for off-road use only. Such as Tubliss is one system but only for off-road use.

My issue with the supermoto is that anything a supermoto can do, something else can do better for cheaper. ALWAYS, 100% of the time. You ain't gonna hit a 14 meter jump on it, you ain't gonna go 180 on it, you ain't gonna ride across the country in it, you ain't gonna beat nothing actually meant for the dirt. I'd rather just get an enduro or adv.

thinking about getting a klx 300 sm and eventually putting some dual sport tires on it. I looked at getting a dirt bike and converting / plating it, but super moto rims ain't cheap, so if you can get a bike thats already set up for street / SM, it could be cheaper just to swap the tire treads.

The timing of your video is perfect because I'm debating turning my Suzuki DRZ400S Dual Sport into a Supermoto. Cycle Cruza, instead of spending the money on all new rims and front brakes, why not just put sticky rubber street tires on the dual sport rims? So I decided to put Pirelli Night Dragon street tires on my OEM (21", 18") Dual Sport rims. I would appreciate your opinion of my decision - thanks 🤙
@BodieMoto
@BodieMoto 2 жыл бұрын
street performance, with 21 inch front wheel your turn in speed is super slow compared to 16-17 , side walls of the tires on supermoto wheels are actually usable so you can lean the bike and even get your knee down with a supermoto, supermoto builds typically have racing suspension as well which is way stiffer than an eduro setup
@Edward-rg8mh

@@BodieMoto Thanks for the info. I'm hoping that slightly fatter street tires will still provide a better street riding experience than my OEM Dual Sport tires. I realize it won't be a Supermoto, but I don't want to spend the money on new rims and front brake. It should still be fun 🤙

There’s a few bikes that do this, 19” used to be the most popular front street tire. Triumph 400X and Honda CB500X, but not exactly Supermoto style. I think a 19” might be better in sand than the narrower 21”.
