Great video Steve, lots of information for us "newbies". Thank you.

@@stevevinson6030 Have you shown in any videos the brake mounting set you used on this kart and if not would it be possible at some point to show a detailed view. I am having trouble wrapping my head around mounting the caliper to the frame. I am using the same caliper as you are.

@tomtruesdale6901 Early version installed on this video. I have since removed it and made a simple bracket with angle iron so it is easily removed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoe9Xmeeg8eXrKcsi=rHyeaIN84U3oxUgd

Steve, fyi the "keyway" is the slot in the axle, hub, etc. The little piece of barstock is the key.
@stevevinson603010 ай бұрын
Yes....I stand corrected. Mark at Renegade reminded me of the proper terms. I confuse nuts and bolts too on a few videos if you listen closely. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.

I've got a racing background, in mini sprints and sprint cars. Oten times that gets in the way of understanding why you guys do things the way you do. Some things I hope you can clarify. Sprockets: I haven't seen anything but one piece sprockets on a cyclekart, Especially on axles with differentials being used, it seems almost impossible to change gearing without disassembling the whole rear end. It wasn't unusual for me to change split sprockets or quick change gears between heats, My bucket list includes tracs from 1/6 mile to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Does one ratio really fit all? I'm figuring clearance for a crossmember. What's the largest sprocket I'm likely to use? Drive sprocket: My chain drive mentor taught never to use a sprocket smaller than 16 tooth, on pain of fatal damage to gear cases, Can you really get away with 10 or 12 on torque converters? Why doesn't anyone run hydraulics and cables through the frame rails? Nylock nuts are for one time use, In a thrash they tend to get reused instead of thrown away. I like to use regular nuts with half height jam nuts. Have you or Mike considered making bearing attachment plates with slotted holes? I'll quit here before I find out the post size limits! -

Good Questions, I will try to be brief. Sprockets: Some guys use split sprockets, we aren't worried about going fast, so changing sprockets isn't typical. Drive sprockets. The TAV comes with the 10 and or 12 tooth. I think the difference, is the tall tires change the gear ratios. If you check a go-kart gearing calculator....that may make more sense. Running the brake lines through the frame could work, I just haven't tried it. Nylock, I use them more than once all the time....no issues so far. Jam nuts are a good alternative. Slotted bearing plates, not sure what that would do? Thanks for your questions. Cheers

@@stevevinson6030 I thought vertical slots might make differential bearings easier to adjust. I wince every time I rewatch you putting vice grips on your rear axle!

Steve - thanks as always for these insights. I am a little confused about the non driven wheel. Is it supposed to spin freely on the axel? If the axel nut is tightened against the hub it will turn with the axel, even without the key and lock screw - no?
@stevevinson60308 ай бұрын
It will turn, perhaps a bit of friction. I add grease to the inside so that the axle doesn't gall as much

Thanks for the informative "How-to" videos. Are aluminum shaft collars okay instead of the steel?
@stevevinson603010 ай бұрын
Probably, I have only used the steel versions. As long as they clamp, should be fine

The bearing sets I got from Go-Power don't have set screws in the bearing, there is a coller with one. Will this work or should I get some with set screws? Seems like the shaft might spin in the bearing.
@stevevinson60304 ай бұрын
I have found that the grub screws will mall the axle and make it very difficult to remove. The Collars work well to keep everything in place without messing up the axle.

could i use this axel set up on a bicycle ? is the chain the same size ? i want to build a hybrid camper pedal gas and electric recumbent tricycle i have a lot of ideas just waiting for warmer weather so i can get the welder out ,,
@stevevinson603010 ай бұрын
Yes you can, as long as your bearings are supported.
