jamieroundtheworld which bags did you use on your bike? I am planning a similar route and looking for bags..
@jamieroundtheworld6 жыл бұрын
Sorry mate I have only just seen your comment. I used Apidura's Saddle and Frame Packs for all my clothes, tools etc - they are quite pricey but perfectly designed (extremely light, waterproof and stay in place very well without the need for clunk metal pannier racks). Then I also had Altura Dryline Bar Bag on my handlebars where I kept my valuables. This has a strap, and could quickly be clipped off and on my handlebars so I could keep it with me whenever I stopped off anywhere. It also has a plastic wallet on top to put maps in as you can see in the video :) Hope that helps.

@dutchman76234 жыл бұрын
If you plan a route through the Netherlands make sure you take the coast and Afsluitdijk from south-west to north-east. Main wind direction is from the south-west, and if you have the rare chance of having a north-east wind in summer it is very much needed, because that wind indicates temps of 35 and more and a little warm wind is welcome.

What an adventure! This trip is on my list to do next year. Have you published your stays somewhere? And what would you do different looking back at your trip? Route and material wise?
@jamieroundtheworld5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! :) By stays do you mean my accommodation? I mostly used AirBnB and stayed in people's spare rooms which was a great way to meet new people and find out more about the country. I did this for charity and so did cover a fair amount of ground each day - if I was going purely to explore the country I would probably cut down the mileage each day so I could spend longer taking it all in. I spent a long time planning the route and was pretty happy with it overall and loved everywhere I visited. There was a couple short sections of bad road or tracks etc but thats always bound to happen.

This was in August, so some afternoons were peaking in the 30C range and really baking hot (like day 2/4). Fantastic video mate! I have few questions tough: do you think you could have done it with a carbon bike? How did you manage leaving the bike unattended while shopping and sleeping?
@jamieroundtheworld6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I definitely think you could do it on a carbon. My bike has a lot of carbon components and is about 8kg so is as light as some carbon bikes - if you used similar bags to me which strap on without metal panniers or racking then you're still running a pretty light setup and not putting too much strain on the bike. Only thing is that a road bike is obviously not built for the occasions when you end up on a trail or cobbled road so it can get pretty uncomfortable then! I bought a Kryptonite Evolution Lite Mini-6 which was the lightest U-Lock I could find with strong enough protection, as well as using security skewers so the wheels could only be removed with a specific allen key. However all the AirBnB hosts I stayed with had somewhere to store my bike safely overnight - it is Netherlands after all!

Guys, stop saying that he shouldn’t wear a helmet and that it’s not the Dutch way, why take the risk of falling? Not wearing a helmet doesn’t mean that your cool, it just means your being careless, yes Dutch people don’t wear helmets but that doesn’t make them careless, they just grew up with cycling and know how to cycle professionally
@mardiffv.87755 жыл бұрын
The Dutch do not wear helmets is....separated cycling infrastructure. In simple terms; the Dutch do not mix bikes with cars above 30 km/h. So the Dutch have almost eliminated car-bike accidents. Sure, still 200 cyclists are killed each year, but considering the high number of cyclists on the Dutch roads every day, the risk of dying while cycling in traffic is very low. BTW, the Dutch own 22.5 milions bikes for 17 milions Dutchmen.
@arthurhagen38264 жыл бұрын
On a trip like this, alone, and on a bike like that most Dutch would probably wear helmets. I would! Helmets only look silly when riding a regular bike :)
@allws96834 жыл бұрын
Don't bullshit. Usually Dutch people ride on a straight up city bike and usually don't go faster than 20 kmh. And then you don't need them, cause you will fall on your hand and knees usually, due to the higher stear position. On the other hand, on race bikes and off road atb's most (sensible) people will wear helmets. On e-bikes that can go >25 kmh it even will be obligated to use one. So it comes down on the type of bike you use. But be free to wear a helmet, if you feel better with it.
@banapotato69404 жыл бұрын
Yeah... that’s exactly what i meant with my comment why are you so mean.. Edit: i also forgot i made that comment lol, it was a year ago
@allws96834 жыл бұрын
@@banapotato6940 Oh, sorry for using a 'strong' word, but you are the one who is mean, bringing up the helmet issue at a video with a guy wearing a helmet on a race bike. The helmet discussion is used to put the safety burden on cyclists rather than poor infrastructure and cars. I think I made a nuance when to wear a helmet.
