Hi @gcntech Why can’t I unclip after fitting a brand new set of Shimano SPD-SL cleats? When will Shimano realise this problem and redesign their Cleats or Pedal release mechanism? Why do I have to resort to filling down the rubber tips (yellow, blue or red) that are making contact with the pedal release mechanism and preventing it from smooth unclipping? Why doesn’t Shimano sell replacement metal SPD-SL pedal wear plates? Why does my perfectly fine pedals (bearings and body) have to go to landfill when worn wear plates start causing knee problems? By changing from screw-on to bonded wear plates and by reducing the size and on some models individualised the contact patch, they made the problem worse. Rant over, why do I bother anyway, I’m currently moving to Look Pedals because of the issues stated above and the fact decent quality Shimano pedals became pretty unaffordable compared to competition… Please put a bit of pressure on Shimano to get their act together… Thank you

An issue I came across when I replaced my GRX chainring to a larger big cog was also to be mindful of the fact you'll probably need to raise the front deraileur hanger slightly in order to give clearance for the new chainring. The extra teeth on the bigger new cog will make it closer to the hanger than it was with the smaller one, giving less clearance then before (in my case, the chain rubbed after doing this).

I was personally able to overcome issues with pain in the back of my knees by lowering my saddle just a touch. I initially thought it was my cleats since I had recently started using SPD-SLs (coming from SPDs), but knocking my seatpost down without doing anything to my cleat position did the trick.
@cuebj10 ай бұрын
Tip on cleat position for different feet: spend some time on a flat pedal or otherwise non clip pedal and just look down at where your feet go. Having started with Christophe clips and Binda straps, I got into clipless with the first Look pedals after seeing Lemond and Hinault feature in C4 TdF coverage. But, years later, I kicked a wall hard while sleeping with bed next to the wall. Right foot now slightly twisted outwards and compacted by 5mm. The specialist said it would be the left foot that felt strange on the bike and he was right. Aside from spending a lot of money on a very careful bike fit, start with the assumption that your feet are not symmetrical so the pedals and cleats need not be symmetrical.

Oli, science dude ! « massively reducing puncture RISK by using tubeless » is not the way to phrase it. Maybe it’s time to use new words to share the knowledge, something like puncture RESILIENCY. And having a tyre set up with puncture SEALING ABILITY vs CARCASS REINFORCEMENT. Or simplify with the use of FLAT, instead of the inadequately chosen word PUNCTURE. Having a tyre increasing puncture resistance is not the same as having self sealing properties. But those come at the expense of drawbacks. Puncture will happen, Deflation will happen, total flat too. Every one needs a spare. I thought you two might remember 😂😅 Appreciate you guys, big love gcn.

A narrow 700c tube won't stretch that well everywhere: the reinforcement around the valve won't allow it and create a zone of small stretch near very extensive stretch, basically a stress concentrator. Now, a thinner, but still regular size 26" tube is a good compromise, when 650b TPU is rare or too costly. Tubes stretch diameter-wise much better than in width.

All of these are N variables that can greatly change the result of the test if changed.

I have asked this question many times but I never get an answer. Maybe this time? I have the new Trek Domane al 5 4th gen with 50/34 and 11/34 12 speed mechanical Shimano 105. I'm thinking about modifying it to 50/47 and 11/50 with a GRX derailleur for a "half-step" configuration. Will it work? And what would be the pros and cons of such a setup? Thanks?
@feedbackzaloop10 ай бұрын
First, GRX 1x derailleur capacity is not technically enough for 3 extra teeth up front, but it might work. Just like technically 12s and 11s pull ratios are different, but not that much. Second, front derailleur parallelogram is moving so that the smaller ring must be significantly smaller than the bigger. If you move the FD way up for clearance over a 47t chainring, it will be too high at 50 and cause chain drop. Lastly, did you check the gear spacings with gear calculator and surely wouldn't like other ways to achieve "half-step", with maybe 1,5 or 2,5 offset? But then you will definetely need absolutely another setup, very similar to 11s GRX Additionally, sure half-steps are even any good for you? You ready to use FD as often as RD?
@michaelsherwin444910 ай бұрын
@@feedbackzaloop I'm an armature cyclist, just started last July. That is why I'm asking the question. 1) Wouldn't the 12 speed 105 rear shifter handle the movement of the GRX. What does the GRX know about how much to move except the shifter actuates it? 2) When I look at the front derailleur while the 34t is selected the derailleur cage is already slightly above the 50t ring. 3) I did the gear ratios by hand and they are almost perfectly spaced in between each other along the entire range giving 24 unique ratios. 4) One would not have to use the FD all that often, only when one needs an in between gear. 5) I don't know if it would be any good for me. That is why I asked for pros and cons. I just like the idea and think it would be cool to try. I bet that the GCN Tech members have most of the parts already available (except maybe the 47t ring) and could try this idea in an afternoon. Good or bad idea it is at least an idea worth making a video about.

@@michaelsherwin4449 oh, it's Di2 we talk here, if i read your "what does GRX know"... Ok then, things get bit more complicated, but simpler. There is no 12s GRX Di2 and 11s di2 is not compatible with 12s Di2 in ant form. Otherwise, mechanically: 1) pull ratio same, pairing shifter and RD shouldn't be a problem 2) ok, if you see the spacing is adequate, try it. But not so sure you matched the position of shifting features on the cage with chain 3) did you consider cadence range? In lower gears the spacing normally shouldn't be that tight. So guessing you need to compensate only top gears, my proposal was to shift half + n times full. Not 1l-1h-2l-2h... but 1l-2l-1h-3l-2h-... 4) if so, what is the purpose of half-stepping at all? 5) pros: you do something extraordinary and learn a lot. cons: you end up with hard to operate heavy system 6) GCN hardly ever try out anything unless it's a two-three video series for mass public. Most of questions picked are not specific but an example for broader audience. So I have to ask you again, or rather you have to ask yourself, what specifically do you not like about current drivetrain and what compromises you could make in order to fix this. Because, well, if one could have it all, there would have been such sollution on he market, even be it very expensive.

Cinturato vs P Zero...."Minutes faster, huge!!!" hahahaha, a few minutes or even 10 is not so huge on a 12 hour ride. If you had said a half hour or hour faster, that would be huge. 10 minutes isn't huge unless it's a race.

obviously! it's a matter of perspective. To me, that is huge. it might not be for you.
