It is a beautiful city. Was there last weekend. Loved it. And people are so nice.

First thing I notice.... No trash pollution. No advertising signs obliterating the natural ambiance of the areas.. No honking horns. Loud traffic.... Not like urban USA.

We are going to spend four days in Arnhem next week on a trip from the UK bringing my Hase Lepus recumbent trike over in the car with my son as company and to help. We're looking forward to more great Dutch cycling and interested to see if it's any different when there are a few hills! Love the Bicycle Dutch films!

Hey! Finally made it to Arnhem. I know you look at multiple cities in the Netherlands, but I always get annoyed when foreign people look at countries/cities around the world for good bike infrastructure and they look at the Netherlands, that they mostly focus on Amsterdam or MAYBE Utrecht, because I feel like especially with Amsterdam, Amsterdam is a terrible city to look at for good bike infrastructure, I mean don't get me wrong it's good and I can imagine for foreigners it's great since they are totally not used to bike Infrastructure, but if we were to look at all of the Netherlands, Amsterdam really isn't that great compared to other, maybe smaller cities. It's like looking at New York and thinking that represents the USA, it's a good starting location but far from a typical city.

cycling in Holland ( and Germany and Denmark also ) is such a joy and so safe, peaceful and enlightened compared to the UK. The UK maybe heading out of the EU but I'll be heading in on my bicycle for a more sophisticated experience !

I agree. Amsterdam is one of the worst (for Dutch standards ofc) city for cycling infrastructure

Hey there, can you do a few videos about less populated cities like in the northern part of the Netherlands for example? Frisian cities have great infrastructure as well, Sneek for example.
@MrEscen7 жыл бұрын
First I wanted to make a real good joke about Frisian cities, but then... indeed BicycleDutch has no video from Friesland... shame! So I changed my mind...We want a video from beautiful Friesland... uhh Sneek!
@LeafHuntress7 жыл бұрын
Hij heeft toch een paar posts over Leeuwarden? Geen video daarvan? I.i.g.
@Jerbod27 жыл бұрын
Pardon?

There is a Dutch word 'feestvarken', which doesn't have an English equivalent. A literal translation would be 'party pig'. If a party is being thrown in your honour, on your birthday for example, then you're the 'feestvarken'.

is people cycling to Ikea in netherland?
@taerial8797 жыл бұрын
Yes! Regarding region of Arnhem: via the (not mensioned) high-speed cycle route Arnhem - Babberich you can cycle to the huge IKEA store in Duiven (near Arnhem City). Very close to this IKEA store there is even a roundabout for cyclists!
@martijnvv80317 жыл бұрын
Yes that's possible and people do that.
@LeafHuntress7 жыл бұрын
Local Ikea even has bakfietsen (boxbikes/cargobikes) for hire to transport your new stuff home.

I do cycle to every shop so also to Ikea. I have huge bike bags and also do the shoppings by bike. I do miss my bike during holidays and our children too.

Woohoo, finally one about my hometown 👍 Though I don't think it's one of your best video's. (sorry) Anyway, if you ever decide to come back and give it another try 😉, then for starters, uum.. pick a sunny day in may or june maybe to do justice to the city that was chosen 'Greenest city of Europe' twice? A tip: visit the 'Steenstraat' in the centre of Arnhem (yup, that street from the Monoply board game). The Steenstraat is a lively and busy one-way street for cars and at the same time a two-way street for cyclists.. with no bike lanes nor any pavement markings at all. (yes, this was done on purpose, there is a philosophy behind it) Just sit down at the terrace of the lunchroom late afternoon (next to the Italian ice cream parlour) and let yourself be entertained 🙂. It's a funny example of 'shared space' with total anarchy where car drivers challenge cyclists who are trying to show the drivers that they are still the boss in the street. As a bike commuter I gladly join that game in the Steenstraat twice a day.

Jay - self-appointed promotor of the Netherlands I was disappointed he didn't show the John Frost bridge and the war memorial in the centre of the round about. I came to the Netherlands two years ago and it was a very emotional visit to Arnhem. The suffering of the Dutch in that city was very hard and the they showed true grit and determination in the face of great adversity. Also amazing compassion and love for the allies despite the destruction and death visited upon them.
@BicycleDutch7 жыл бұрын
Because I don't like to repeat myself. That part of Arnhem('s history) was all covered before bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2015/09/15/a-monumental-bicycle-roundabout-in-arnhem/
@bartholoclumpdink72467 жыл бұрын
BicycleDutch I must be getting old, I had forgotten that video. I really enjoyed watching it again. Your article was great too. I would love to see you do a "war tour" type of documentary from a cyclists point of view. I think that would be really interesting. Thanks.

Where is The Bridge Too Far?
@Brozius25125 жыл бұрын
That bridge doesn't exist anymore, they used a bridge in a town called Deventer for the movie. www.questia.com/magazine/1P3-1316744971/on-location-with-a-bridge-too-far
I suppose traffic accidents involving bicycles are less frequent than other parts of the world because of all the infrastructure to compliment biking. But I got a little concerned when I realized that almost no one was wearing a helmet. Not even the children.
@taerial8795 жыл бұрын
With First World infrastructure (people centric in stead of car-centric) the people on bikes are dressed for the destiny, not the journey! Thus silly plastic hats/brain cookers (aka helmets) and dressed like a canary (lycra) isn't necessary at all.
@henkvandommelen32064 жыл бұрын
Most head injuries in the Netherlands occur in the bathroom, Are you trying to say that we need to wear a helmet when we are washing our hair? Cause thats what it sounds like to me.

@robertrijkers49236 жыл бұрын
he didn't show the real hills like in the suburb 'geitenkamp'... even with my 24 speed bike i need to get off and walk upwards on some streets on a hot day... ;p

Even E-bikes get eaten alive by that hill, scooters and better are the only real way to make it up without killing yourself or getting down and walking for a while.

Arnhem is realy cool,not too big and overcrowded(like Amsterdam),my hometown for already 35 years. You're right about all the bike lanes/routes created,that's a nice fact,for sure for foreighner visitors/tourist. But there are 2 facts that makes biking a lot of times a hassle:most people riding bikes,don't sign their direction at crossing streets,so you have to take care about others.When you ask them,why they don't mention their direction,they act stupid most of the time(they don't like to be adjusted).When you tell them,in case they get an accident,i won't help a hand,because they don't care themselves to use their hands/arms for this purpose,they're flabberguested. The second fact,is the use of smartphone during biking(forbidden). Totally stupid behaviour and senseless to others.This creates "Zombie Traffic".

You'll find that the Netherlands is one of the most culturally tolerant countries you'll ever visit in your lifetime. Indeed, it has a long history of welcoming oppressed people.
@MrExezz7 жыл бұрын
Pretty much the opposite, would be a more valid question than this nonsense, but you believe what you want.
@rubbereentjuh7 жыл бұрын
I don't think the dutch have anything against people of any color. There is some tension between local groups and common immigrants, but it is more focussed on their country of origin instead of the color of their skin. Black people are well accepted.
