Being from the US, seeing all of the Trams and strains and well used space and people outside doing stuff, just reminds me that the US as a poor, barely developed nation. Sure there is money here, but it all goes to the mega wealthy and defense contractors( largely one in the same) rather than being used to improve the lives of the people. I see no reason why we couldn't have places that look like this but we refuse to move forward into the future(the present in NL apparently), instead we are going backwards in so many ways(reinstating laws about women's bodies from 1864 for instance) and entrenching the status quo. If you live somewhere else and value your life and freedom, do not come here.

I love these videos you post. Their so peaceful. It is worlds apart from where i live. The traffic never stops here. I cycled home from work this morning at 1:00am and there was still traffic on the roads. I admire that Dutch government for the work they have done. Please keep posting. Thank you.

I am quite interested in purchasing the new Gazelle Eclipse electric bike for use here in Southern California. I do sometimes wonder how many Dutch cyclists purchase any of these electric bikes in the Netherlands.

Most new bikes sold are electric and the average selling price is between 2500 and 5k.

What amazes me every time I watch your videos from the Netherlands: Overall people have a much higher cadence, e.g. use easier gears. I wonder if the pedelec/e-bike boom will make this worse. In Germany, especially in Munich, people use much harder gears, then suffer fatigue and have to let it roll for some kind before starting again. Overall this results in more stiffness and hence riding shorter distance. It took me some years to learn 85-95rpm cadence in easier gears and now I'm almost every time the fastest non-sportive cyclists in town. It would be really a shame if electrified bikes with max support would cause to "unlearn" this skill.

The Hague is also the most dangerous municipality for cycling in The Netherlands. Though some wonderful cycling paths do exist (some shown in the clip), there are too many dangerous spots to create a cycling-friendly environment. A lot of parents choose to drop their kids at school (with a car). Most school routes are not safe enough for kids between 8 and 12 to cycle alone. The low percentage of people cycling had everything to do with the car-centric position of the municipality.

Makes my cortisol levels increase 😂 I ride a motorcycle in den Haag, so have to deal with the crazies.
@kbusetto38718 ай бұрын
I work sometimes in Den Haag, and take the tram, train, bus, or walk. I like the idea of bicycling, but I am baffled by how many people refuse to wear a bike helmet here in the Netherlands and will actively criticize those few who do wear one. One of the most senseless things I witness is parents putting on a helmet on their child they are transporting, yet not wearing one themselves. I know that it is safer than other places for bike riding, but cars are still dangerous for bikes and there are injuries and fatalities every year. Protect your head and your nervous system with a helmet. 👍🏼
@t.vanoosterhout2338 ай бұрын
This only applies to speed cyclists and users of e-bikes, who often already wear helmets. For the rest of us, no. Protect us from cars first, once that has been achieved I'll look at the residual risk and balance risk vs comfort.
@ralph61428 ай бұрын
And likewise how many pedestrians are knocked down, injured and killed each year? Do you recommend pedestrians wearing helmets? No of course not! (Would you wear a helmet as a pedestrian saying that it saves lives?) I used to wear a helmet (as a teenager) when on my BMX bike, not on my normal bike. So I feel it should be a personal decision.
@Wielie03057 ай бұрын
I don’t judge you for wearing a helmet. You are judging the ones without one…
@MigGroningen7 ай бұрын
The figures show that way more pedestrians and car-drivers (especially young people driving cars) sustain head-injuries. So I suppose you know this and thus also wear a helmet when inside a moving car or walking on the sidewalk?
