As a child and teenager there was always something magical about biking to school in the rain in the early mornings and everyone arriving in the warm classroom with wet clothing while it was still a little dark outside. It wakes you up, makes you more appreciative of being warm and sheltered, and made me feel connected with everyone else.

I once fell in love with a girl, we met riding our bikes in the rain on a hot summers day and both got overtaken by a massive shower. We only wore our summer clothes and had nothing on us that couldn't survive the rain, we were totally comfortable with it and looked at eachother and we both smiled and it was love right there, just BOOM!

There's nothing magical about cycling in the rain in the UK - it's horrible and more dangerous.......irritable car drivers, and then getting 'wooshed' from a massive puddle as a lorry goes past you, drivers just pulling out in front of you without warning. I love running in the rain, but have never liked cycling in it. I can tell you that it's not a pleasant experience in the UK! You have to be constantly vigilant about what's gong on around you when cycling in the UK, and car drivers just don't give you the respect they do in the Netherlands. Everyday is a battle. Oh, and alot of cyclist also wear helmets. I notice no one does in your country......how refreshing this must be. Can't imagine it being the case where I'm from (London). Watching this video makes me want to cycle in the rain in the Netherlands, so I can say 'yes, cycling in the rain isn't that bad afterall'!

Great video, as usual! The cycling infrastructure definitely makes a difference. When I lived in Toronto, I dreaded cycling in the rain, because drivers weren't able to see me properly in the rain and the dark. It was terrifying. Now that we live in the Netherlands, cycling in the rain is no issue at all. I wouldn't say it's "fun" but it's actually kind of nice. It definitely makes you appreciate the sunny days!
@johnnysecular5 жыл бұрын
Not Just Bikes my biggest problem riding in the rain in Toronto is that i have to ride extra slow. In Toronto you have to be constantly vigilant and ready to brake super hard, because we ride in the door zone, and we cannot control unexpected manoeuvres from drivers who move to the right lane without looking over their shoulder (or even indicating). I don't mind riding in traffic; it's a fact of life here in Toronto, but clearly, dedicated cycling infrastructure makes so much more sense. The frustrating thing about Toronto cycling infra is that the improvement is too slow, and in the meantime the number of drivers is actually increasing, because population growth is faster than transit ridership growth. So just as cycling advocates gain more and more political clout, we are faced with an increased number of drivers and cars.

I really appreciate the red pavement that you find on many Dutch bicycle paths. It stands out, yet is also quite mellow and rustic (even nicer than the black pavement in my view). The fact that the asphalt itself is colored rather than painted is also a huge bonus. In any case, I prefer the red coloring to the bright paint that often gets used elsewhere, especially the bright green in the US or the bright blue paint that they use at some crossings in Denmark. Those just don't blend in nearly as well with the surrounding.

If your eyesight is not too bad it can be safer to take your glasses off while cycling in the rain - I do that. I definitely need my glasses, but my eyesight is good enough to see people and obstacles from tens of meters away, enough to ride safely. If that is not an option, maybe something like a baseball-cap might help keep the water off your glasses!
@rttm5 жыл бұрын
@@namewarvergeben Yes I have thought about that, but I rather keep glasses on. Although I can see without them too. It's just -2.5 for left eye and something -1.5 for right, but without glasses It strain the eye. I made new glasses about 3 years ago and then I was so surprised that I could see so much better. That I started to wear them all the time, not only when cycling. Eyes didn't hurt anymore. :D Before I had cheap glasses with just -1 for both eye. I only used them for cycling and watching tv. But even with the new glasses, I can't read the text from traffic signs from distance. I should have cylindrical something, but when I made the glasses at shop. I had my own frames and the staff at store was picky about it.. they said that these flex too much, that there's no point making cylindrical lenses.. Also glasses protect eyes from debris and tree branches that sometime reach to road and are difficult to see in dark.. especially now at winter when trees are bare. Well of course there at Netherland, infrastructure is much better than here in Estonia. Of course here they probably would also cut the tree branches if I would report and demand it very firmly, but I just feel sorry for trees. :P

Nice video! The Netherlands has one of the best cycling infrastructure in the world. The country is flat , so easier to cycle and safe, as most of the cycle paths are seperated from the traffic with shrubs, plants, trees, barriers seperating them. Here in West Belgium as well, we cycle a lot. But the bicycle infrastructure is not as safe and good as in the Netherlands at many places. We have many historical towns with very narrow streets, where bicycles and cars use the same small roads, not with a seperater ( no space for it).

Such a relaxing video. I noticed that security (bicycle locks) doesn't seem to be practiced so stringently. I suppose that considering bicycles are as vital to transportation in the Netherlands as the larger motor vehicles, the laws concerning theft would be similarily applicable for 2-wheeled vehicles. I imagine also that riding on a brick surface has certain challenges that asphalt doesn't. All-in-all, I'd like to see this kind of thing in other parts of the world, as well.
@rutgerb5 жыл бұрын
Your observation is wrong. Locks are almost always used, also when leaving the bike just for minute or two out of sight. As for the law and justice... biketheft is rarely solved. But when it does the fines are a bit serious, I onces bought a bike from a junky (its a studenthabbit ;) and I had to pay 500 euros in court for buying stolen goods.
@ep616115 жыл бұрын
@@rutgerb - I stand corrected. I was basing my comment on what I actually saw in the video (and I looked for that specifically). As for the laws, I surmised that based on what I saw (or failed to see in this case), I reasoned that *if* locks weren't regularly used, it might have been because the penalties for committing bike theft were hard enough to be an effective deterrent (how problematic is auto theft by comparison?). Again, I stand corrected. Thank you for straightening me out.

Brick roads like 2:22 aren't really slippery normally, but they might cause a bit more friction, especially when they're uneven. These bricks usually aren't glazed, which would make them really slippery. Smooth stone surfaces like at 4:05 can be more dangerous when you make a turn on them.
@ep616115 жыл бұрын
@@peterslegers6121 - Another thank you. "Glazed" or unglazed brick never came to mind, either. I don't believe NL has such an extreme environmental issue as America (which is why "glazed" brick was my mental default setting) and therefore wouldn't have such a strong need for them.
