The Vršič Pass sits high in the Julian Alps in the Northwestern Triglav national park in Slovenia. It's a heavy duty cycle with so many switchbacks it's painful to try and count them. The Slovenian mountain pass sits at a cool 1611 metres and you can definitely feel it when you're on a heavy fully loaded touring bicycle. Being the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, we had to tackle it! We approached it from the south, following the Soča river, through the Soča valley and then started to climb!
If you have any of your own techniques for dealing with the physical and mental stress of mountain climbing with bicycles then comment them below.
We had wonderful time in Slovenia, from the busy Lake Bled to the more chill Lake Bohinj to small time life in Poljana. It was the perfect introduction to bike touring Slovenia and somewhere that's high on our list to return to for more adventures in the future!

Not cycling specific, but guess it could apply. When I was trekking to Everest Base Camp with a 20-kilo bag and the paths were pretty much just huge, 10-hour staircases, I had to keep counting in my head up from 1 to 4, keeping in time with my steps. I also timed my breathing to fit one inhale and one exhale per 4 steps. Puts you in a total trance!

Oh yeah I do counting stuff sometimes too. Or focus on a stone or something on the road like 3metres away and aim for that and just repeat!

Cobblestones are there for a reason, they are there for better traction in winter conditions. Slovenia is not Balkan, Balkan is a name for Ottoman European lands which Slovenia was never part of. Balkan is not a geographical term is just an outdated political term. edit: counting steps is the the best.

Oh really! It's weird that they're just on one side of the mountain. And sorry for the Balkan mistake, people from Slovenia told us Balkan but I know it's a really complicated issue. Will note for future videos!

@@YAMSWORLD Yeah, some people tend to be (over)sensitive about the Balkans thing. While, geographically, 50% of the country falls under the Balkan peninsula (south of the Ljubljanica-Sava divide), politically/culturally/historically, Slovenia is pretty much what Germans call Mitteleuropa (basically the ex Holy Roman Empire) - except from 1919 to 1991, as part of Yugoslavia, of course. Future tip: say 'Balkan peninsula' so people understand you're talking in geographic terms, not political =D Nice video btw, and what an achievement! Congrats!

@@YAMSWORLD Your attitude is really not appropriate... but it's ok since you obviously don't know the history of the place. Actually the road(Russian Road) was built in the time of WW1 by slave labor of ca 10.000 Russian POWs by whom those Cobblestones were put there and are still there to remind us of their sacrifice. Around 300 of them died building that road. In early March 1916 there was an avalanche that buried ca 110 Russians. Going down the road you passed a Russian Chapel, a small orthodox church that was built by the prissoners as a monument to their dead brothers, where the last body was found.

That was just my reaction at the time which was purely from a cycling point of view. Thanks for the info, it's super interesting to find out more.

@@leblubblab "The geographical term of a peninsula defines that the water border must be longer than land, with the land side being the shortest in the triangle, but that is not the case with the Balkan Peninsula". "The definition of the Balkan Peninsula's natural borders do not coincide with the technical definition of a peninsula and hence modern geographers reject the idea of a Balkan peninsula". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkans Inclusion of Slovenia and Croatia into Balkan was promoted by Serbian political agenda. In 1994, at the regional conference in Prague, the International Geographical Union ranked Slovenia among the nine Central European countries, together with Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria.
