I once watched Milan San Remo, on a stream with the Italian commentators. A camera was stationary on a downhill turn with riders going by single file. One of these commentators was able to rattle off the names of nearly every single rider going by - at least 50 rider names within one or two minutes. And these guys can't recognize Vinokorouv or Uran, out alone and shown continuously on camera for minutes.
@cliffmenthol2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. These commentators were useless. They didn't know anything about bike racing, and they were BORING. So painful to listen to.
@lexlayabout57572 жыл бұрын
Pathetic. When they did mention riders it was only because they could see their number and then I believe they read out some spiel from prepared scripts. Sometimes they even failed to recognise a national jersey. They did not have much clue about bike racing either - I can say that as rode a few seasons in road races.
@JumpingWatermelons3 жыл бұрын
For those questioning why Uran would take a bribe rather than battle for gold, you need to consider the situation. He was in a two-man break, pulling away from a large chase group, with the entire peloton bearing down on them a bit further behind. He attacked solo, but ended up Vinokourov on his wheel. Once he saw Vino, he probably understood that his best possible outcome in the race was getting second place behind Vino.. and the most likely outcome was being caught by the break-away or entire peloton. He wasn't going to win a sprint against Vino. Without a climb, he probably would not have attacked and got away from him. If one of them would have attacked and finished solo, it would be Vino..... At some point, Vino (or his team?) proposed the deal. Perhaps it was proposed right after him and Uran got away - that would be the smart thing for Vino to do, because the deal would include Uran working together with him and riding very hard, not saving for a sprint or cat and mouse ending. Since Uran wouldn't have expected to beat Vino, accepting the deal was a smart thing. Also it is possible that the deal included Vino paying Uran whether they were caught or not (as long as Uran worked hard). If Vino had not proposed the deal, it is possible - or perhaps likely - that they would not have worked as well together and would have been caught. For Vino and Uran, that deal was good and beneficial for both of them. It is only bad from the perspective of the chase groups. But also, even without a deal, there was a good chance that Uran would have done the same thing (except also put in SOME effort at the end).. because this was his best option and his only chance for a medal. If he went to the finish with that large breakaway, no way he was finishing in the top 3 (and in the Olympics, no other finishing places matter)

Very poor commentary. They couldn't recognise riders unless they could see the number, and didn't even recognise the national jerseys sometimes. Several times said they were on the circuit when they hadn't reached it yet. It would also have been nice if they had said where the riders were (Cobham, Ripley etc) but I don't think they had a clue; I know these roads well but the camera was not always at an angle to see well.

@26:00 I've ridden in some long road races, but never seen such an apparently "organised" natural break as that, and so soon after the start. Was it semi-official because of a long starting ceremony? The relative lack of spectators and ideally placed bushes make it look pre-arranged, and it might explain why they were riding like it was neutralised until then.
@dukenukem57686 ай бұрын
I think they brought in a couple of cricket commentators for this. When they see a rider's number they drone on about his past achievments (obviously reading from a crib sheet), and how nice it would be if they won this one, instead of telling us the race situation. Where was Phill Liggett ?

The commentators seemed to think a Cavendish win was a foregone conclusion. The GB team seemed to think so too, so they ground away at the front of the bunch thinking they could wear everyone else down and contain any breakaways, but they tired themselves out instead. So when serious breaks did occur towards the end they were too too worn out to react. They might as well have pushed their opponents most of the way in wheelchairs. Poor strategy.

Cycle road racing is rooted in making actual journeys, like going from Milan to San Remo for a weekend break. I expect some guy in Milan around 1900 said to his friends _"I bet I can get to the seaside quicker than you!"_ Cycle road racing grew from that.
