Cycling the Driftless Region | PART 2: LA CROSSE

Part 2 of Cycling the Driftless finds me in Rushford, Minnesota. Heading east, I reach the terminus of the Root River Trail in Houston and get onto a quiet county road that takes me to the Mississippi River Trail - really a bike route as opposed to a trail - that leads me to the bridge that crosses the river. Bike touring through his region is amazing. Along the trail, it’s very wooded, with lots of views of the Root River, but as I begin riding the back roads, the landscapes open up dramatically. I reach La Crosse over a broad and scenic crossing of the Mississippi and find a bike shop where my seat post issue is resolved and I find myself with a free afternoon to explore this lovely riverside city.

I love small towns. I grew up in a small town in Arizona and then moved to San Diego. Now in my 60’s we live in a smallish town of 10,000 in the Midwest. Love it!! My husband and I bought e-bikes this year and we are able to ride for longer.

Way back, I had a similar "sinking seatpost" problem. Turned out a "friendly" mechanic had used some kind of teflon spray to loosen it and, yes, it was loose. Wouldn't stay up. I solved it by cleaning the post and the inside of the seat tube with fuel (ethanol) for my Trangia stove.

I crossed that same bridge into La Crosse on a bicycle 23 years ago during a cross country ride from Seattle to DC. Oh, how I miss those 48 days. Thanks for taking me back in time to enjoy some lovely memories....and taking us along with you on this wonderful journey. Cheers!

I'm lucky enough to live in the area. I think you took hwy 21 from Houston -- definitely the lower traffic option. I take that Mississippi River bridge every day I bike to work.(which is not EVERY day) La Crescent now has a bike/ped bridge over 14/61 which I take when coming home going westward (also the short but nice Wagon Wheel trail).
