As a resident of Northeast Ohio, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the trail! Interesting fact about the swampy area where you filmed the crane and the turtles - that used to be a junkyard until they put in a bunch of effort cleaning up the old car parts and stuff and then flooded it to make a home for all the wildlife you saw!

Great stuff, keep up the good work! Please visit the Iron Ore Heritage Trail In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and the Little Traverse Wheelway in the northwest Lower Peninsula. A segment of this trail in Petoskey is actually a trail to rail to trail, originating as a carriage route when the area was settled for tourism, then converted to a railway, then converted back to a paved trail. And if you time it right, you could tour the Zoo de Mack, an annual road ride from Harbor Springs to Mackinac Island, MI.

Yes indeed! The area around Hermann was settled by Germans, there is a town named Rhineland, and the area is famous for its wine growing region. Come see!

@@TheBicycleTourists Lol - and I can completely understand why. The "Rhineland" area starts roughly 50 miles to the south from my location and the "Hermann" monument the city is named after is 50 miles to the north. They must immediately have felt like home. I guess I have to start making plans for vacations in the US next year 🙂- Thanks for the inspiration!

@@TheBicycleTourists No, but not far away (around 50 miles away, the next big city close to the Rhine is Dusseldorf), but we want to go to the Wiesbaden area in September to some small villages south of Wiesbaden around Bad Durkheim for the "early wine" (aka "Federweisser") season. Perfect place for bicycling, food etc. for a reasonable price

I'm from Illinois, I lived out in a shire like cluster if subdivisions . There was a rail trail across the highway in the back if a nice neighborhood. You had to ride to an empty lot and take a small trail to the path. It went all the way out into the corn and beyond and in the other direction it stretched into the Chicago suburbs. I live in the South now where there is no such thing. Miss it.

Sorry to hear. I know that Rails to Trails, the organization that creates these trails, has a mission to provide trail access to everyone, but you know, that's a pretty tall order. Government, land owners, and local communities all can work AGAINST creating these trails for various reasons. It ain't easy!

As someone who sold his road bike with 25,000 miles on the odometer at age 82 after experiencing an extreme close call in what's usually a bike friendly area, I wonder if the good folks in Montana explained why they hate cyclists? I've had very few hate-full experiences, mostly pickup drivers. I think you made the right decision after the number of white crosses you passed!
@TheBicycleTourists
@TheBicycleTourists 3 күн бұрын
They did not tell us why. My guess? It's all about identity politics. Cycling represents a different mindset than perhaps they are used to. Someone (in Washington state) told us that they saw cyclists as smug, spoiled and entitled, riding two abreast, taking up valuable space on the roads and not caring how they affected traffic. But I think the real danger on the Montana highways was that when vehicles are going 120 mph on a shoulder-less two-lane road, they can barely notice a cyclist, let alone react to them.

love the video. I live in KC and saw your ride where you started from KC. I've ridden the Rock Island and Katy so many times but no farther East than Hermann. As a racer for a dozen years we used to hammer from kc to Sedalia in 6 hours and catch the train back to KC in a day. then later Sedalia to Jeff City and Jeff to Hermann. I had a hip replacement in 2019 and quit racing when the world came to an end with Covid. :( Anyway, I started doing more gravel rides than road rides and now I'm really looking to slow the pace, load up the bike and do multi day rides. Videos like yours just make me want to get out there so bad. I'm trying to figure out stopping points and videos like yours really helped give me ideas. I'm not sure I can spend the money you did so I might do some stealth camping once in a while and I'm definitely going to make sure it's no 100º like your trip but just really excited to slow down and enjoy the ride. Much like the guy in this video said, hurry up and get to the next place. I have quite a few videos as well. Maybe you'll check them out but great job on putting all this together. since I do videos too I can truly appreciate all the work you did to put together so much footage. Be Safe and maybe I'll see you on a trail somewhere someday!

Thank you! Definitely as we get older our daily miles gets smaller. Partly due to physical limitations, partly due to a desire to immerse ourselves in the experience. Thank you! Here's the route we put together on Komoot, if not 100% accurate it's very close. This was my only "self-guided" tour; usually I plan all my routes myself but this ride was different. A couple of notes: if you're happy to do some climbing, there were two longer climbs that we passed on. The first was from Lake Bled to where the route in Komoot starts. The second was from Bonhinj to Soriśca Planina, a ski resort at the top of a pass. The Komoot route shows us riding that but we shuttled it. If you fly in you will probably find yourself in Kranj, near the airport. not far from lake Bled, kind of a must-see. Good luck with your trip and feel free to ask any questions you might have. i hope you get to do that trip with your dad! www.komoot.com/tour/1296530776?share_token=ac1L0NOZu8F2NCgWETA6xnXSUzqn8jGZwT9REzJQ66I83wfbsA&ref=wtd

I just rode the Hiawatha Trail a couple of weeks ago. I stayed in Avery which is about 11 miles west and south of the Pearson Trailhead. I rode from my cabin to Pearson and then up the trail to the East Portal, and then back down to Avery. It was 50 of the most beautiful miles I've ever ridden. I'm now planning on driving to Plummer, ID to ride the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes from Plummer to Mullan and back. Hopefully next year.

@@TheBicycleTourists My plan for the Trail of the CDA is to drive up to the CDA casino on a Mon. Drive down to Plummer early Tues. and ride to Mullan and back. Then drive back to Boise on Wed. Similar to my Hiawatha trip. I may need another year to work up to a 144-mile ride, though. Edit: And now that I've looked up the B300k, I have another item to add to my list. That one may be a few more years down the trail, as I don't think I'm quite ready for bikepacking yet.
@TheBicycleTourists
@TheBicycleTourists 10 күн бұрын
Sounds like a great plan! One thing I would say about bikepacking (or bike touring - I think the Bitterroot 300 could be ridden as either) is that it's really not that different from taking several rides, just day after day. With a bit of weight of course! What I am saying is that it's easier than most people think it is.

An unfortunate reality is that the City of Tucson and Pima County are two very separate entities. The Chuck Huckleberry Memorial Loop is maintained by the County (which enjoys a much more robust budget than the City). The streets in town are maintained (or rather, not maintained) by the City which struggles at times financially. BTW, if you ever get down this way again, you should check out the Pima Air and Space Museum and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Don't come now, though. It's routinely over 100* during the day here this time of year.
