Thank you! Only GoPro and iPhone. I've done the Hiawatha previously but skipped it here as it is really a side trip, not on the route per se.

fun fact - you were much closer to the adriatic sea a day prior. i saw you visited pliskovica, which is situated no more than 3 or 4 miles from the actual coast… there’s a very narrow stretch of italy there with some beautiful scenery and views of the adriatic, also absolutely stunning bike paths that take you down to triest and then from there just a short ride to koper. i would totally recommend it if you visit these parts in the future again

Here's another fun fact: We didn't know about that bike trail (we were just following the self-guided tour on this trip) until yesterday, when someone mentioned the very same path. So I checked it out on the map, dropped the Google Man in and it looks like such a great trail. I don't know why they took us straight to Muggia. Next time!

@ and with proper bikes hah. i was surprised to see you ride those before i heard you say you rented them from a tour operator. it’s uncanny they thought those bikes would be a good idea for a trip like that… i recently moved to these parts and that bora can be a problem. when it hits hard (some times it can blow for a week non stop) they often close roads even for motorized traffic. i remember the first time i got caught in it on my bike. had to pedal downhill just to keep moving hah

There are many reasons why this bike trail is not as widely known and/or used as much as Parenzana. To go biking on Parenzana in most cases people park their cars close to the Adriatic sea, stay relatively close to the sea all the time, decide how many kilometers they will ride on that day...leave the bike trail at any point and go for a meal, do some sightseeing, discover new places. On the other hand...Kozina lies quite high above the sea level - 500 meters/1600 feet...which means it makes much more sense for those who live in Triest to "suffer on the way up" and than enjoy the views on the way back...than the other way around.@@TheBicycleTourists

"Most Slovenians" don't want to stay close to where they live on Saturdays and/or Sundays if the weather is nice. So riding, hiking or simply walking from Kozina to Triest in most cases you will meet locals from Triest who will greet you in Italian, there will be buses with tourist from Austria, Germany...@@TheBicycleTourists

such a bad piece of luck there. it doesn’t rain often in the karst region and it makes such a big difference, not just the ride itself which is obvious,but the special karst colors of the sky give a much different feel to the entire region… the landscape (and particularly the sky) was a big inspiration for local and (famous) artists from other parts of europe… also respect to your endurance. what seems to be a pretty short ride on the map, it’s actually pretty tough because it constantly goes up and down, even though there aren’t any big climbs on the plateau itself. lovely video!

Thank you! Part of the thrill, or part of the reason I find bike touring to be such a fulfilling experience, is that you have to deal with difficult situations. We all want to escape hardship, it's our nature, but getting out there makes for a totally new and fresh experience. It enriches life, even if we don't really want to be out there riding in the rain, it becomes a gorgeous memory. Another great thing about bike touring (or traveling in general) is you can ride through the same route on a different day and it will be a completely different experience. Thanks for your comments!

Unfortunately nobody told you that apart from Parenzana that connected Triest with the Istrian peninsula there was also another rail line that connected Kozina to Triest. So you could have turned right in Kozina and enjoyed one of the most spectactacular descents from the Karst platou directly into the center of Trieste. The valley is called "dolina Glinscice" in Slovenian and Val Rosandra in Italian....There are some beatiful pictures available on Google maps - "Giordano Cottur cycle and pedestrian path"/pista ciclopedonale. The rail line was gradually discontinued after the war at first because of the border which never existed before and later because there were too few passangers on the Italian side...

Happy 65th birthday I enjoyed your birthday ride nice trail. How is Julianna’s back doing? Hope she is feeling better. I have had 2 surgeries on my back and not fun. I have found out with my back is if I don’t ride my bike my back bothers me quite a bit so riding is kinda like physical therapy and it helps me so maybe it might be the same with Julianna . Thought I would reach out on your birthday ride and Julianna’s back,,, take care.

Thank you for reaching out! Julianna's back is improving, but the weather here in Colorado has finally taken a turn for the worse, so not much riding. We're hoping to remedy that soon, but while she's not fully healed, cycling is one thing that seems to be working well for her, thank goodness!

I am preparing to bike tour this year from Nantes to Budapest following the Eurovelo 6,and maybe, keep going through the Sultan's trail to Turkey. Can't wait for may to arrive. I have tried for three consecutive years and had to keep postponing due to different reasons. I love your video of the Loire a vélo, specially the "good luck choosing which chateux to visit" 😂. So difficult. I will probably ride 2 days and visit one the third day, or one of the main cities. So it will be a very slow tide at the beginning of my trip

It's not easy making a big trip, we had to postpone our Europe ride last year (hoping we can do it in 2025). Lots of things to get in the way. Your trip sounds fantastic. We also rode the EV6 from Donauschingen to Vienna some years ago, also a really excellent ride. Best of luck!

Nice work on this movie, Roland! You and Julliana have a great synergy together. And what an accomplishment! I've seen most of your other vids including most of the individual segments of your Cross-America ride. This final movie ties it all together well. Even though you both suffered near the end of your trip it added some tension and resolve to the story. And as always, great music selections! Congrats on your 65th birthday ride! Well done! Interesting seeing the bike trail systems in Denver and Tuscon through your lens. Keep up the good work and hope you and Julliana are healthy and able to take a shorter trip this year!

I am 77, living a car free lifestyle in Southern Indiana since my wife of 42 years passed away in 2020. I sold our car and 55 inch TV that month and have 2 Wabi singlespeeds and a CONCORD E Bike for emergencies. I quit my job also and volunteer at our local hospital once per week, am also an Army and Air Force veteran, I cycled back then as well, since 1972. You two are my clear favorite KZbin cyclists, I hope to see more of your very well crafted inspirational videos soon, and for many years to come.

Thank you Frank! I commend you. It's not easy for most people to live car-free. I don't, although since retiring I hardly put any miles on the car at all, which feels pretty good. We have a grocery store within walking distance, that helps! BTW, we LOVED southern Indiana for biking, would love to come back with our road bikes and ride those hills with something other than our heavy touring bikes. Absolutely gorgeous!

Exceptionally beautiful presentation of Slovenia! To keep it short...there was never any link between an average Slovenian and anything Soviet. The only thing that comes to my mind is that communist system abolished the figure of St. Nicholas in public life ( Santa Claus ) and until 1990 most children would receive gifts from St. Nicholas at home and from "Dedek Mraz" at schools and companies where our parents worked. The idea of "Dedek Mraz" had a Soviet origin...just that in our case his home town was under the Triglav mountain. We had to learn the so called "serbo-croatian" which was the oficial language in the military and the cyrillic alphabet. Very few people actually learned Russian. Many learned German and French at school in the 1970's and 1980's.

Glad you enjoyed my city of Nantes. Well, except for the hotel. Between Nantes and Le Pelerin, as an alternative to the nothern shore which is indeed very industrial, there is also a Loire à Vélo path on the southern shore which is a lot more enjoyable and scenic. Komoot prefers the north one because it's faster, shorter and flatter, but I really prefer the south one, that goes through the landmark village of Trentemoult instead of the industrial port.
@TheBicycleTourists
@TheBicycleTourists 13 күн бұрын
Good to know! Truth be told, I rather like the industrial bits, but always good to be back in the lush countryside. You certainly can't always trust Komoot will lead you on the most scenic path. Had I known, we'd have followed your route.
