Join me for a bicycle ride on the scenic Mount Baker Highway from the town of Glacier to Artist Point as a participant in the 2022 Mt. Baker Hill Climb.
As stated on the event's web site, the Mt. Baker Hill Climb is described as follows: "Ascend 4,462 feet from Chair 9 in Glacier to Artist Point (5,140 feet elevation) in 22 miles. The Mt. Baker Highway (SR542) is known as one of the most scenic paved roads in the country and rarely is the highway closed to motorized vehicles from Glacier to Artist Point. With steep elevation and several switchbacks, this ride is not for the faint of heart but the views are stunning. Experience the agony and the ecstasy!""
Normally held the first Sunday following Labor Day, this year the Mt. Baker Hill Climb had to be rescheduled for two weeks later. This was because of the smoke-pocalypse created by multiple forest fires shrouding Washington State in smog. On the originally planned date of September 11th, 2022 there was too much smoke from the Bolt Creek Forest Fire so the race organizers had to cancel. Last year on the day of the race it was a torrential downpour. All the trouble the race had with the elements made me think of the old James Taylor song Fire and Rain.
Luckily, they were able to reschedule for Sunday the 25th. The new day worked out great, the weather was absolutely perfect for the duration of the event. The Mt. Baker Hill Climb was in the morning, but by noon the haze from forest fire smoke was starting to creep back in, so it was total luck that it was so clear for the event.
