Jo Harley, Your 1000% right! Nothing to add i was told to SPIN by my coach as the very first thing back when I started racing 27 years ago! Just one small addition on heart rate: Provided one knows their heart rate AND power, heart rate can be an indicator for "What's wrong ?" Scenario: I'm in my "normal powerzone" (3,5 - 4.5 w/kg on a 70.3 (90k)TT) and I do not "feel right" or have problems: - heart rate too high : dehydrated (blood is is getting too thick ) : solution: DRINK MORE! - heart rate too low : under carbed (body is switching to "survival" mode ) : solution: EAT MORE #ctfu ! That's just a small addition from my experience. BTW: I do not use heart rate in competition - I "feel it" :) Keep up the very good stuff !! Stephan

Credit where credit's due; since I started following you in May and switched from a year on the high fat, low carb meat based diet (trying in vain to make it work al Volek & Phinney), my cycling has improved way more than ever before in my life (I'm 41 and cycling recreationally and for general transport since 13). I got a power meter in September and today I went up one of the local 10 minute climbs (Brickworks) and managed to hold 299W, which took over a minute off my previous best time from before I did LCHF and was riding 150+ miles per week (I was commuting 30 miles every day to work but work closer to home now, so haven't got the time for that sort of mileage at the moment). I'm starting to beat my mates :-) www.strava.com/activities/444101138

Crazy advice: recovery and not going so hard 1-3 Watts per kilo - training hard racing - 4-7 Watts per kilo. If say e.g. your 75kgs then taking it easy = 75 to 225 Watts, riding with the hammer down 300 to 525 Watts --- those are two hell of wide ranges ... I guess the answer is to read the book you recommend.

A great follow up to this vid would be completing an FTP test hints and tips, using the Garmin to set laps etc. I have a Stages on your recommendation and have purchased "racing and training with power" (I trust your recommendations) As you say the book is pretty easy to read but translating it to noob language needs a Durianrider spin!! I know there are a lot of FTP test 'you tube' vids but they don't cover it in your familiar and direct style :-)

If it's such a simple pacing tool I wonder what makes it so damned expensive. Is it just hard to make a power meter or does it have a lot of intricate parts?
@electrocomm
@electrocomm 9 жыл бұрын
+imapineapple15 The device itself is very cheap, tens of $ to manufacture, but it's the R&D, profit and market share that sets the price at this very high level. The price will drop over time as more and more manufacturers will compete in this market segment and there will be higher demand for these devices. A good example is the price of SSD storage device that has been dropping at a linear rate since 2010 (google it). This is how the market works, we just need to accept it as it is.

+imapineapple15 Marketing and the fact that there is not a very large demand. Power meters are hardly more advanced than digital luggage scales. Pretty much luggage scales with a small micro chip and Bluetooth connectivity. Early adopters always pay the highest price. The crank arm itself also costs about $80 so it never will cost any less than that. Power meters will only really get super cheap when you start getting Chinese manufacturers making generic power meters for less than $100. Also presumably ANT+ compliance is an issue and until we also get generic garmin copies from china that use some universal signals it will still be reserved for the big branded companies.

Stem staring However, Froome admits that’s not the case. “I’m not looking at anything, I just find my neck gets [sore] if I look up,” he reveals. “For some reason I feel when I look down I’m able to breathe a lot easier. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I feel it’s a much more comfortable position to do really hard efforts. “Obviously when I look down I can see at least a good five metres in front of me,” he adds quickly with a laugh. “I do need to keep looking up to check!” Read more at www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/racing/tour-de-france/chris-froome-interview-tour-de-france-training-152302#FMmV380Tc8O3umhV.99

Also you are saying that HR takes 3-4min to go up, which again is doesnt make sense. If you do 4-5 watts/kg, I pretty sure your HR will jump up immediately. There is even a cycle op cheap power meter based purely on a heart rate data. It would be interesting if you could get it and test against stages.

But in terms of using for sportives where the gradients aren't the same what strategy do you use to climb? Do you vary your watts per kg or try to keep it the same through undulating climbs? thanks
@emcardledrogba

Keep it the same as watts are watts. If you go downhill or uphill 200 watts is the same
@tjnadah
@tjnadah 10 жыл бұрын
Get the D many thanks. I understood the premise of the watts being the same independent of gradient i just wasn't sure say on an easier gradient you would go up 3watts per kg and on the steeper gradients going down to 1w per kg but i guess your answer suggests just work harder to keep the gradient the same! thanks again
@emcardledrogba
@emcardledrogba 10 жыл бұрын
Mellow Miles You should try to keep the same watts the whole way up a climb or any other thing if you want to go fast. If you go fast then slow lactate builds up in your muscles and makes you go slower. If you keep an even wattage you will go fastest.

What does watts per kilo=? Curious what the mathematical formula is? How does it (the power meter) derive this calculation? Would help me understand whats going on.
@loopie007
@loopie007 10 жыл бұрын
Watts/KG= Power/Your Weight. It's not important that the number be exact. It is a reference number for you to train with. I.E. Warm up at 1W/Kg, Pace at 2W/Kg, Short Hills at 5W/Kg. It's for you to set a pace with and understand what your body is doing. It's not to determine who is putting out the most power.
@loopie007
@loopie007 10 жыл бұрын
How does it get the calculation? You tell your cycle computer your weight, it reads in the power from your power meter as you ride and it does simple division. Power divided by your weight. = Watts/Kg

Man most people generate more power when standing up out of saddle and grinding slower rpms…I don’t think you can sit and spin fast enough to get up grades steeper than 6-7%
@durianriders
@durianriders 4 ай бұрын
Name one pro who wins with grinding in 2024? 😆
@thepatternforms859
@thepatternforms859 4 ай бұрын
@@durianriders pros are not “most people”. If they can generate 500 watts sitting in the saddle on a 15% grade hill spinning that is all well and fine but for 99% of people anything steeper than 10% means being FORCED out of the saddle which also means shifting a few gears UP which means cadence dropping into the 40-60 rpm range. This grinding style is forced bc the rider is out of the saddle on these steep grades. Your theory about sitting and spinning is fine for the 4-7% grade hills but anything steeper it is impossible.

Power meters are great, but if I was the UCI I would ban power meters from racing. Pacing by feel should be one of the skills that determine race results. If you have a device dictating your pace you might as well get a motor pedalling for you. I don't want to see robots racing each other pretty much in time trial mode all the time.

Wow, you don't even mention doing tests to try and find lactate threshold power, or V02 max, powermeters are useless if you have nothing to go off, you need to know what power is in what zone for you, for example, your V02 max should be your maximum power you are able to hold over 5 minutes whilst your lactate threshold power is the maximum power you should be able to hold over 20 minutes, then you will have your maxmimum power you can hold over 1 minute and your actual maximum power (your sprint), without these zones power meters are useless, you can select a wattage and hold it, but you won't know for certain what zone that power is in and whether you can hold it for as long as you want to or even if you are capable of producing more power for the time you are riding at that wattage.

@fiddleronthebike
@fiddleronthebike 10 жыл бұрын
for your physic it's nonsense - because you cannot ride with the cadence, which fit's your body and the circumstances
@igorchalov
@igorchalov 10 жыл бұрын
filmevoncosima So your body has to adopt to circumstances. Pedal sometimes slow, sometimes fast: 40 to 180 rpm. Ofcourse, classic cycling theory of optimal cadence can't be applied here. Maybe constant cadence is more efficient. But who said that human body was designed to pedal with constant speed of 90 rpm? How natural that really is? Also for some people singlespeeding is just more fun.
@fiddleronthebike
@fiddleronthebike 10 жыл бұрын
if for someone it is more fun - absolute fine! Buy a Singlespeed and look for roads possible to ride; I can imaging that it is a challenge and satisfaction to find the limits and push them. But try to climb a 15% hill or 60km/h+ ... :-)
@igorchalov
@igorchalov 10 жыл бұрын
filmevoncosima Any road is possible to ride on singlespeed. That only depends on the gear choice and your condition.
@fiddleronthebike
@fiddleronthebike 10 жыл бұрын
if you want to climb a 15% hill, you will not ride more than 10km/h - even if your condition is very good; that means a cadence of 30 with 39/15 - but to drive 60km/h with this 39/15 needs a cadence of nearly 200!!! Both nobody can do a long time...

Yes you can hit your local hill at 150 watts and then slowly increase that. You can hold the same exact effort the whole way up the hill using the power meter reading. This makes it really easy to improve because next time you can just increase the wattage a little. Without the power reading you're guessing.

Ok but if i hit my local hill at 10km/h (current speed) and try to hold that speed all the way... Isn't it the same as to try to hold 150 watts (example numbers)?
@AdamBrussGoGo
@AdamBrussGoGo 10 жыл бұрын
Sp33dster No it's not the same. If there's a headwind then you'd have to put out more wattage(effort) to hold 10km/h. The grade of the hill changes. If the grade goes to 15% then 10km/h may be impossible but 300 watts is still possible. You can hold 300 watts the whole time regardless of grade/wind. But you can't just hold 10km/h necessarily and you may not want to because it could be way too easy or way too hard.
