Cycling Track Women's Sprint Finals - Great Britain (Victoria Pendleton) v Australia (Anna Meares) Full Replay from the Velodrome at the London 2012 Olympic Games. - 7 August 2012
Cycling is among the rare sports that have always featured on the Olympic programme. Road cycling, however, was not on the programme of the Paris 1900, St Louis 1904 or London 1908 Games, while track cycling wasn't in the programme of the Stockholm 1912 Games.
The first road event in Olympic history took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. The race started in Athens, headed towards Marathon, then returned to Athens, at the Phaliron velodrome.
Olympic cycling was added to the women's programme in Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual road event.

I saw an interview last night with Anna Mears and she said they planned 3 years in advance to set up the final ride of her staying behind Pendleton so that she had the advantage on the final lap. In fact, they trained with another cyclist for 12 months to copy the move Pendleton made .... which shows what is involved in winning a Gold Medal!

Pendleton was disqualified from race one because if you are leading in the last 200m you must stay below the red 'sprinter's' line, which she failed to do. So race one was given to Meares. Meares won race two, so in the best of three races, she wins the gold with two wins. Riders alternate leading out in each race, and must stay in front for at least one lap, after that they can try and force the other rider to the front if they want to. Riders tend to like to do a come from behind sprint using the drafting effect where the lead rider is splitting the air and giving the rear rider a draft.

Russell moore----Yes, but the only reason Pendleton came over the red line was because Mears, who was known as 'elbows' , nudged her first thereby throwing Pendleton slightly off balance.

That may be true of the FIRST instance, but she went above the sprinters line THREE TIMES ... the first (and most blatant) time when they almost collided, the next about 20 meters later, and the last as they crossed the finish line.

What an amazing climatic contest between two legends of the sport and supreme Olympic athletes. Maybe if Pendleton hadn't come out of the sprinters lane causing the clash it may have been closer in race two, as it would have been hard to refocus after that. Especially when Meres was able to force Pendleton back around and unleash her power!

Why do geese fly in a V shape? Because those at the back don't have to work as hard. Pendleton followed Meares up to the edge to try and stay behind so she could keep her momentum. It doesn't work, she's forced into the front and loses.

Can someone please explain to me?? I'm a cycling enthusiast but not into watching track biking (Nevertheless, it's still pretty interesting to me). Why do the cyclist start easy? Then the leader will always be eyeing the racer behind, and what's with Meares cycling to the edge of the track and why does Pendleton follows behind her like as if it's part of the rule? And the she overtook her and sped off, can't seem to bind them all together, an explanation will help tho

If a rider makes a break and fails to drop the rider behind then the rider behind can sit in their draft saving as much as 40% of their energy due have so much less air resistance. This allows the rider behind to easily sling shot past the lead rider for the win. Tactics are HUGE in sprinting as a result.
@florianmeier3186
@florianmeier3186 3 жыл бұрын
It is much about surprise: The rider in front always risks that the other takes cover of drag behind him/her and saves so much power that he/she can destroy the other in the final sprint. On the other hand, if you surprise the other competitor by a sudden acceleration, he/her has to close the gap and looses much extra energy lacking in the final. Therefore they both try to stay close, but with a speed, where saving energy due to reduced air drag does not play a role and they always try to avoid being surprised looking at each other. Even in the final, timing is everything: If you can stay some more seconds behind the other, you might save the decision making energy, but if you start final acceleration too late, it is all over, too.

Khadar ali it’s a pretty simple race. First to cross the line wins. Problem is, if you are in front, you don’t want to push hard for the whole race. This would tire you out while your opponent has been in your slipstream. So the first couple of laps is a mental game, it’s strategy and it’s rider skill. Being able to watch your opponent, predict whether they are going to push, or trick you into pushing for them. If you are the leader you must lead for one lap. But after that is when the games are played. You can see in the second race Mears rides right up the bank and almost comes to a complete stop. Mears does better chasing, so does Pendleton. But Pendleton is forced in front by Mears’ trackstand handing Mears the advantage. The last lap or so is about raw pace who has the best sprint in them. You can try and force the rider behind to go around you on the outside. But there are some restrictions for the last lap. If you lead in the last lap you can’t cross the red “sprinters’ line” this would make it to easy to just impede the other rider’s line and force them wide.

The rider in the back usually has a benefit because the rider in the front gets most of the wind impact in the race meaning that the rider in the back can conserve energy in order to be fsster in the last meters of the race.

Coincidence, IMO. Even if someone has larger legs than you, if they don't have their tactics, sprint position, etc sorted out, you can still win. I mean, even IF Pendleton has bigger legs than Meares, with Pendleton's much more upright position (vs Meares' more "tucked in" position), she'll lose

@Daz555Daz

Tactics. Go out into the lead too early and the rider in 2nd can get a nice rest sitting in the leader's slip stream and using 40% less energy. They then use that saved energy to slingshot past in the final metres to win the race. The race is often won by the purely fastest rider regardless of tactics but when things are close like in an Olympic final, the timing of when and how to go all out for the win is critical.
