Thanks for a very professional film on a very interesting topic. Two observations : firstly, as Tim intimated, in the next 15 years this will probably be no more as young people are just not interested in this type of hard work anymore. Secondly, trawling in the Thames estuary all day and not another ship of any description seen? I find that strange.

I'd love to be a small time coastal fishermen and live a life on the sea. One problem: BUREAUCRACY. Most of the rules, regulations and costs are set up to favour corporate fleets as it's easier to manage a few companies than 100's of small operators. It's sad. Here in Australia, an ISLAND nation we import 75% of our seafood!! If you were to start up a small operation today, you wouldn't get much change from half a million to a million dollars depending on the fishery. Forget about tuna or rock lobster 🦞. You'd need six to ten million.

Loved the video but the irony of what is happening! The fishermen want Brexit, "to take back our fishing grounds" Yet as mentioned in the video, 70 to 80% of the catches are sold to Europe as the UK doesn't really eat a lot of fish! It's an industry that has died in the UK, just a few old boys like this chap who keep it going, give it 20 years and it won't be there any longer.

Fishing like this in unsustainable, just look at the amount of bycatch. No wonder there is nothing left in those water, every organism plays a role in the food chain and you should only be fishing by selective targeting. You are just digging your own grave by fishing like this. 20% of every bycatch here dies? that's so much damage to the ecosystem.

Not much else to eat from a skate only the cheeks - rest of the body is cartilage and the skin is inedible as it is poisonous and barbed

Thanks for the film. I found it very interesting. I think there are some very sad aspects but we really need to see where fish come from and how. And this is of course just one way. Humans don't do sustainability but it's harsh to blame fishermen who have just had to adapt to the next thing. I think we could actually pay off the fishermen if there was a better way to stop emptying the ocean. I mean we pay for many people who do absolutely nothing. This has more virtue than that. We need to start farming more seafood.

Farming seafood is not the solution and is probably worse thing you can do, it can destroy ecosystems therefore killing off further species. Please look up Norwegian farmed salmon and how toxic they are and how they are impacting their local ecosystem. Farming is not sustainable either, soils get depleted just as the oceans do, we need to give the ocean a break...

@@GP30277 I think all forms of net caught fish should be seriously looked at, the bycatch is truly dreadful. Line caught is much less harmful as is shellfish farming.
