Tour de France 2006 - stage 17 - d. 20 July 2006 - St.-Jean-de-Maurienne to Morzine, 201 km.
This stage will forever be remembered because of Floyd Landis' superhuman racing. He did one of the biggest combacks ever. On stage 16 he lost over 8 minutes. But on this day he turned it all around.
Danish commentary.

Since 2000 I've never seen a performance that showed a GC rider was on doping more clearly than this. Most stupid performance ever. Lose 8 minutes the day before and then go and do something like this. In some way this performance by Floyd Landis made the world really be aware of the issue with doping

How about Lance having to use his brakes and talking to his DS on the radio while dropping the pack in 1999? That was only 7 year before this? Did you not realize it then? When a guy who never could climb dropped the worlds best? UNBELIEVABLE. As someone once said....

Floyd was doping--so was every single other rider with maybe rare exceptions. So, it was a level playing field and he crushed them. I remember watching this stage--I thought at the time he was doping, it was getting increasingly obvious they all were to even naive fans at the time, but still the performance was incredible. A ride for the ages really.

Even though this performance was drug assisted, it's like Lance's Tour wins in that Landis couldn't have done this on drugs alone. To put 7 minutes into his rivals in a solo breakaway for most of the stage is ridiculous even when considering drugs, and it would've taken a ton of talent, hard work, and mental fortitude to pull something like this off.

Competition in 2006 was overall really weak. The whole top 5 from the previous 2005 Tour de France - which is Armstrong, Basso, Ullrich, Mancebo and Vinokourov - didn't participate. Joseba Beloki had also fallen off, due to his 2003 crash. Tyler Hamilton, another top guy, had fallen off due to doping shit. Landis' biggest threat to the title in the end was Oscar Pereiro... 2005 was basically the end of that particular era, and 2006 was a really shitty intermediate year before Alberto Contador came along as the new big stage race guy.
@japphan
@japphan 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, being a cheating piece of shit is more effective if you are also good. This stage also shows how much help Lance had by his drugs. He basically had this boost _every single day_ . And he needed it, because he did not have the talent to finish top 10. Just look up why Greg Lemond thought he was on drugs from the start. You know, the American who won with talent.

At the end of the second or third ascent he did change the bike. Through the stage he never suffer, his legs were never putting force. He use water on all the stage tho wet his body and when he arrives he was just fine. To me, the most incredible motor bike cheat in history, order of magnitude beyond stupidity. 14:20 Pay close attention to his micro expressions of nervousness and guilt during this interview. Ha yeah I just fast forwarded to that part. Even without context, the shaky voice, plastic uncomfortable fake smile, and dead eyes are a sure giveaway of something really being fishy. Hands to the face are a subconscious attempt to protect/hide himself, it's why you see scores of people with their hands on their heads or over their mouths in the stands at really tense sporting matches.

Is it wrong to take whatever substance available to be the greatest you can possibly be in a sport of your choice . To live your life to the fullest of its potential using what ever means available. I mean even if we all took PED we would all perform differently . Its kind of like race car driving. They upgrade and install the best technology available at the time into their race cars so they perform at their highest ability. The only downside is it is not an even playing field they need to separate natural, vs PED athletes into sporting events..
