Watched this video before my long ride today and saved me during rapid descent. Unexpected steep left handed turn, at 35kph was in my drops leaning with weight over tire and successfully regained control from sandy dirt filled shoulder, by trusting my position...and regained my line. thanks very much for the advice.

I agree with Warren, I have experienced this effect even in short downhills. I'm around 175-180 lbs and have trouble keeping up with people 1/2 my age in the uphill, but going downhill (a short 300 meters) I quickly accelerate to 30+ mph in a matter of seconds.

Couple of things, I see many of the fast descender on the Tour leaning their knees out into the corner, like the MotoGP boys do. No mention of it here, but it does help shift the weight to allow for faster cornering? Are you concerned about lack of grip if you do that. Secondly I was always told to shift back in the saddle at the same time as "getting in the drops"..........adds to the lower centre of gravity and keeps more weight over the back wheel. Comments welcome!!

Putting your knee out allows you to corner faster as it shifts the center of balance and allows you to keep the bike more upright thus giving you more traction on the road. This is a good thing in wet slippery conditions.

I already knew this, it's how I hit 48mph down an open road with a 40 limit on a MTB that had road tyres fitted, it also helps that I weigh a fair bit too and I was drafting a friend before passing him, reminds me, I want to smash my top speed using my 700c wheel size hybrid.

Excellent points for sure, best I have heard/seen on the web so far. This includes some highly visible ex-pro's and so-called expert bicycling publications. Who make the ridiculous statement that counter steering is not necessary. (rolling eyes) :-D ARR: Anticipate, Recognize, React. All key points of Situational Awareness. (think pilots) Counter Steer! Absolutely. Along with the ancillary use of body steering, it is the best way and most efficient way to corner. Looking through the corner. Again, spot on. FOV; field of vision and vision forward are crucial to cornering properly. To nail turn-in-points, apexes and exit-points, a riders vision must always be as far up the road and at the exit of a corner as much as possible. These are part of Visual Perception skills. Smoothing out the corner, great advice. Approaching wide, or 'Squaring off the corner' And lastly, ride by the seat of your pants- is exactly how to do it. 'Feel' as you as say. It takes time to establish this skill but eventually, you develop a sense of what the tires and bike are doing. This holds true for push-bikes, motorbikes and cars. But, a few things I have discovered about fast descending and cornering. Misconception about riding position. 1. Getting in the drops lowers CoM. It moves it slightly forward, but does not really lower it. It may, but fractionally, not nearly enough to affect anything. This is especially true when using new style compact and ultra compact bars- as the delta from hoods to drops is perhaps and inch or so..The CoM is not at a riders shoulders, head or arms. It is at the waist/torso. 2. I rarely stop pedaling through a corner, you don't need to 'weight' the outside of the cranks/pedals. It's just not necessary. I never ride in the drops, always the hoods. I have far more control over the bike using this method.

Sheldon Brown disagrees with the advice given at 1:50 regarding "counter steering." Sheldon says you should keep your body in line with the bicycle while turning rather than keeping your body more upright. If I'm missing something please correct me. Here's a link to the article I'm talking about: sheldonbrown(dot)com/brakturn.html#leaning

Therefore, doesn't really matter how heavy or light a person is on a bike descending, if everything else is equal, the will arrive at the bottom at the same time. In fact, the smaller guy might arrive first since he may be more aerodynamic.

But on this occassion i think people would understand it better and be more aware of what you are saying to them if on this video you had a real person on a video instead of a charcter in a cartoon type video. Just my opinion, but i think people can adapt better to life like scenarios. Thanks for this video it was extremely informative and i love watching your videos as they are helping me improve as a cyclist Cheers

Hi One thing i have noted when going down hill is the rear of the bike feels very unstable you can feel it twitching almost feels like you rear wheel is coming loose now this worries me a bit so is there anything i can do to help with that??? BTW my topend speed down some of the local hills is around 35-40mph

You have to study your laws of physics more carefully. It takes the same amount of time for 2 objects of different masses to fall down to the ground (if you factor out air resistance). Galileo proved this too. True, bigger mass has more force of gravity exerting on it, but it requires more force to move because of its bigger mass.

Things fall at the same rate in a vacuum - not with all the other forces involved in descending on a bike. If you need some proof that heavier riders gain more momentum and speed on a descent - go ride some hills with some bigger friends :)

hey i have a quick question, m new to road bikes so i dont know if it will be a good idea for me to dance while decending in a straight line. if is bad, then can you quickly explain how bad is it?
@eljayflores341410 жыл бұрын
Just my opinion it is bad because you will lose your cennter of gravity. Try to just pedal with high cadence during decend. When dancing its hard to position yourself during high speed corner while doing a high cadence you can easily position yourself in turns.

Sorry, but as a long time motor and bi cyclist, counter steering has NOTHING TO DO with "leaning the bike." Counter Steering means: if you want to turn left, you push on left side of the handlebars. That's it! That may sound strange -- but that's the only way you "steer" a bike at speed. It's all about physics, i.e, your wheels are gyroscopes. Sorry to be negative -- but when I saw in the vid that "countersteering" was "leaning" I had to stop watching. If you got this basic point wrong -- well, I don't know what else you got wrong. Peace.

good advices. but the line would neither be safe nor fast. approach the corner straight on the outside of your lane. brake hard. release brakes and lean into the corner pointing your view to the end of the corner. when there are rocks and you can not see towards the end - even do it. try to see through the wall. your bike will follow where you are looking. do not go on 100% speed - leave some reserve so your turn will not end in the dirty edge of the road or the oncoming traffic.

What matters is density not weight (or mass). If you drop two steel balls made of same material from top of say, the pisa tower, the two balls will hit ground at the same time. Physics!
@davehysom26368 жыл бұрын
Will hit the ground at the same time ... only in a vacuum! Due to air-flow/resistence, the smaller ball should hit the ground faster (mathematics ;)

yeah yeah..... hey buddy. I know 3 cyclists who followed your advice. 1. descending at speed, through a corner, and straight into a kangaroo. the dude died immediately of head injuries. 2. descending on very steep long descent, around a corner and into gravel on the road presumably from some motor head getting his jollies an hour earlier. The guy goes over the bars and breaks both forearms. try wiping yer ass with both arms in plaster. 3. descending in a group on a 10% decline. the dude is tracking his mates in front, who veer into the oncoming lane slightly. ...but then there's a car coming up the hill, that's veered into the cyclists lane slightly. this dude and the car collide....the dude dies immediately. go figure. everyone's a hero hey buddy.
