Best cornering advice: keep your bike and body totally parallel while cornering, and also have the majority of your weight on the outside hand and foot. If turning left, push down with your right hand and foot so you push the wheels into the ground and don't lose traction. I learnt this from my coach and it's improved my cornering and descending dramatically.

Great advice - practicing all these things before you need them will improve your ability to react when they, inevitably, do. Even practicing the tuck and roll on soft lawn will help you ability to avoid injury in a crash.

Good stuff. I was in a group ride 2 days ago and it was carnage. It started 2 riders ahead of me. It was partially luck that i came out unscathed, but also not panicking and knowing to ride almost toward the crash but not into it. It's the sudden left or right swerves that cause you to take out a rider coming in at speed from your flank, which also will bring you down.

In some newly marked roads they put slick reflective white lines (it doesn't seem like paint, but rather some tape-like structure). Be careful when turning on those, as it is likely the tires will slip. I got quite a few scars on the right side of my body, and I hope others do not have to experience the same.

We're all here because we just crashed. ha I went down on the outside on the road. Instinctively didn't put out any limbs, but my shoulder buried hard into the ground. Super sprained now. Thought my collarbone was going to break. Shudder just thinking of doing it again.

4:50 I crashed like this, I did a small roll and planned to disperse the energy. What I did not plan for was the fact that I was going to slide about 8-12 feet. So if you're going a high speed, make sure to stay with it. Keep a really firm grip on the handle bar to lift yourself off the ground a bit and be prepared to see sparks from the metal scraping the ground! Better than skin scraping ;) As always, hindsight is 20/20

Great tips. Just fell last week, and I broke fall with hand - reached out instinctively. Base of hand near wrist still sore. The tuck and roll method seems like it could work, though I think I could have landed on my shoulder or hip if I tried that? I hope I never experience a fall again, but this vid should help me better manage it if I do. I agree with yoga and stretching helping in dealing with falls. That fall happended so fast and without warning, there really is so little time to think when they happen!

This is good advice. I saw it a year ago and somehow it seeped into my reactions to a very nasty side-way sliding crash on gravel while downhill cornering a few days ago. I did not throw out my lowside hand and thus didn't break anything more than skin. It was the front wheel that lost traction so I am working now on throwing my weight back and emphasising my rear brake in such turns.

This video is more about spills than crashes. I think of crashes being a crash into something, like a car. We started a discussion group on Facebook called Car/Bike Safety -Things drivers need to know, which is where I found this video. It would be great to see a video about car/bike crashes from a cyclist's view (what can be done to avoid or minimize one) and a separate video about car/bike crashes about what drivers can do. Just had to put it out there because there is a real need on this subject.

Even if you avoid the force going up your arm, you can still break your elbow and your ulna when you land on them - I know from experience. Good advice for motorcycle riders is switching controls, as I instinctively grabbed for the clutch when shifting at around 20 MPH, which resulted in an immediate endo. My initial confusion, though short lived, robbed me of the precious time to attempt even a shoulder roll, though I think the hang on and ride it out advice is superior.

Would that tuck and roll work on a mountain bike ? Seems harder to do do due to the steeper angled frames .. not sure what to do then. I just had this problem few days ago, I wheelied on the front wheel for 2-3 meters as I panicked and slammed the brakes.. luckily I released as I felt like triping over and the rear wheel fell down in place and managed to stop. Not pleasant.

Right before I went over it a song I didn't like came on my ipod so I looked down to change it and then WAMMMM!! Next thing I'm going over my handle bars..I stuck out my arms and almost broke my wrist..The second time I hit something invisible.. :) I was going so fast I didn't have time to react, went over the handle bars with my hands still on them.. it was MUCH MUCH less painful. :)

Hi - Having your head tucked in means that your skull( and so your neck) are protected from direct impact. As you know from your accident the force exerted on your hands damaged your elbow - it's this straight on force you want to avoid - hence rolling to dissipate the energy - the tucking helps you to roll. Thats said if you're road riding at any speed - wear a helmet.

I suggest practising emergency braking when there's no one near by. It's a practical way to dramatically improve your feel for what to do, and hence your safety. Beginners should unclip cleats beforehand! This training is something I carried forward from driving & motorbiking - in fact I do an emergency braking test EVERY morning - and I'm certain it's a huge help. Do this practice in the rain too! I'm not joking! It teaches you how much you really should slow down in the wet.

I've done aikido for many years, and the twice I've binned it on the bike I have been able to fashion a break fall which has resulted in scrapped knees and elbows etc, but nothing broken. Still, I don't do it for the fun of it. Hitting tarmac at 20mph still smarts.

tuck and roll diverts all the shock to your legs and out. That is why parkour people roll when they jump form high stuff, it swings out all the force out from the upper body to bottom :). I cant find the video, but there is one on youtube that explains it better.

I have used the tuck and roll coming off my long board i wasn't wearing a helmet at the time (shame on me) it was extremely effective in saving me a lot of damage and as I was successful in getting my back to the floor before I it my head did not cause any neck of head injury. That being said always wear a helmet.

Just to bear out what you say about the tuck and roll, versus the hand out, I was riding on the Ride Across Britain. Two of the riders touched wheels and both crashed. One stuck out his arm, the other tucked and rolled. One broke his collar bone, the other went on to complete the 9 day ride. I'll people figure out which was which to see if they were paying attention.

When I hit a rut, my hand is bumped off the handlebars and I lose control of the bike. I usually can regain control, but when I can't., I fall. That's when I stick out my arm and end up smashing my knee. How do you tuck and roll when you are trying to regain control of the bike/balance?????

Great tips, great animation. Could be more thorough, right? I did a small wheelie on a ten speed years ago not realizing someone had removed my quick release just before my ride when I was in as store. The front wheel came off and I went forward in the middle of the road. For some reason, I pushed down on the handlebars and thrust my feet forward... I started running until I was able to slow down, go back and collect my bike. Surely there are other tips or experiences people can share here in the comments section. :) Have a great day and.. just ride.

When going over the handlebars, if you leave go, the handbars can twist, resulting in sharp jabbing action into the rib cage. This in turn can cause some seriously painful broken ribs, and should be avoided at all cost (its worse on flatbars!)

the first time (and the only time) I've come of my bike at speed was with an inexperienced cyclist who didn't pay attention to anything so when I passed him he got a freight and put on his front brake and went head over handlebars, then his rear wheel hit my rear wheel and I lost traction and swerved of into a grass bank and flew of my bike into a barbed wire fence, luckily I had a helmet so it hit the fence instead of my head.

There probably is no requirement where you live. In the USA, for example, there is no requirement in most cities, but some cities will require that minors wear helmets/reflective gear at night, or will require that you ride in the right lane, and have all sorts of smaller requirements. There probably is no age limit, but just be aware that your city might have certain requirements of you if you're younger.

I flipped my bike one time going down a hill and reached my arms out in front to break my fall. I hit with the heels of my hands, and while my bike gloves protected my hands from abrasion, the shock travelled up my forearm and fractured my left elbow when the joint was jammed together. That said, without a helmet, tuck & roll looks like it would be suicidal. Even with one, what a great chance you'd have of breaking your neck...

Two weeks ago, I went down on the low side. The front wheel lost traction and down I went. I'm looking at the advice for low-side crash but in my case, I went down so fast and so hard that there was no time. Cost me 5 stitches above my I and a fractured orbital floor. Fracture is minor says the ENT, and I should expect to recover feeling in that side of my face (think dentist from hell). Still, I like the idea of rolling the bike. Hope I never have to.
