The Garmin Edge 830 is big improvement for Garmin's 800 computer series, with an impressive and improved touchscreen and usability | Subscribe to Cycling Weekly here: kzbin.info...
The Garmin Edge 800 range of devices has lived in one guise or another for quite few years now. In 2011, the original Garmin Edge 800 was born - the first to feature a touchscreen.
Then came the 820 in 2016. Those first touchscreens were difficult to use, went haywire in the rain and generally glitched out - often at the cost of your whole ride.

just ordered ! the review gave me the information needed to make a decision after days of looking at different units. My old edge 1000 now only lasting max 4 hours with most connections disabled... looking forward to the long battery run time..

I've had my 830 for more than 1 year now and really pleased with it. Definite upgrade from old Edge 1000. Especially like the loooong battery life. I also rate the Garmin Varia rear light / radar which I pair with the 830. Never leave home without it.

I agree that it is a well designed object that is a joy to use when everything goes according to plan. In other less ideal circumstances, the navigation simply drives me nuts. The unit constantly decides that the correct route is one that is passing nearby in parallel from the route I traced in Komoot. It also sometimes sees mini loops in the route and tries to send me into U-Turns. It’s not just my unit, a friend who uses Ride With GPS routes on a 530 has the same issues. So, it spends most of the ride telling me to turn or U-turn. This is where the unit automatically switching from the dashboard to the map when a turn is approaching goes from being a cool feature to being a pain as I have to fight with it to get to the data I want to see. When I deviate from the planned route, it calculates new routes that seldom make any sense. Sometimes, it is so busy calculating new routes and trying to tell me where to go that it takes minutes to realise that we are back on the originally planned route. This navigation is the perfect example of trying to do too much and failing miserably.

They can't right now, the training effect engine is not theirs and can only be installed on the device, I have my garmin paired with my Turbo Trainer when running zwift to record power and HR so it calculates the effect, it isn't really any hassle to to that.

Hi. I can't seem to find information about a following issue. I am thinking between the Wahoo Bolt V2 and Garmin 830. With the Wahoo it is all clear, since I have the V1. But I don't know if the following is possible with the Edge 830. Lets say I am navigating with a pre-loaded course onto 830. But half way through I decide to change the route, and need to get off the planned (course) track to get to one place. As I have read, I cannot upload new courses to 530/830 from a phone/app while an activity is in progress. But what if I select an address/POI or even a point on a map during an activity and selected course already? Will this work? Won't the current activity stop/end ?? Thnx

I recently purchased a Garmin Edge 830 - first purchase of a Garmin product. My display seems blur, in particular the the large text/characters in the main menu with white background. Annoying, a bit uncomfortable but not dramatic. I don't know if this is a defect or if I am used to better screen in general (i.e. iPhone). Are you experiencing the same? Thanks. John

Garmin Connect the app and Garmin Connect the website may seem a bit clunky compared to newer rivals, because both are older and embedded with older legacy approaches. They need a wholistic rethink and maybe make one version for serious training racers and another for tourist.

Well, I still can’t understand how the configuration process and phone app for such a great device is so, so, so bad. I’ve got a Wahoo Bolt and a Garmin 830. The main reason I still use my Wahoo (besides I love it) is the headache for the frequent failures in sync and the pain in the ass that is to configure or change settings on the device through the app. All is so easy on my Wahoo. Otherwise the device is absolutely great. I’ve got same problem with my beloved watch (Garmin Phoenix 6) compared to my previous (Suunto). Why, Garmin, why?

Finally, Garmin should realize that the selection of metric vs. imperial should not be per installation of Garmin Connect app, but rather per activity type. This is for those who run with a Garmin watch and ride with an Edge computer. I still understand running in miles and minutes/mile pace and cycling in km because it’s a European sport.

This bike was really easy to assemble kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

I have one and it’s ok. The vario rear light works well will it and the light meter on the screen is excellent in changing light. I totally disagree with the comments about the touch screen. I would say it’s just about usable. I would give the screen five out of ten. The hole Connect app is crap and the Wahoo system where you control most of it from your phone is obviously the way to go. To be honest I recon I could design a better cycling computer myself. Wahoo’s build quality is shocking and I still can’t believe they started to sell the Roam with a mount that snapped off on the first pothole. It’s just unbelievable how stupid that is. The Hammerhead is almost brilliant and if they do a Hammerhead version two with sound and a smaller bezel and a app like Wahoo they will clean up. If Sony or Samsung etc made a cycling computer they would wipe out Gamin over night. To be honest Garmin are not exactly trying very hard and their hole ecosystem is really out of date and if Wahoo or Hammerhead got their little problems sorted they could clean up easy. Garmin product’s are really well made but it’s all out of date and if they don’t wake up they will be gone in a few years!

Just got a Hammerhead and fecking love it, for me, the sound issue is not a problem as I want my computer quiet but I would have liked the option and can understand others saying it is a deal breaker. Good review, but the 830 is by far not as good as you described. The touch screen in winter and in wet conditions is useless. The connection to the smartphone is not really working after finishing the activity. This means the transfer from the head unit to the smartphone and transfer to STRAVA as well. The tracking functionality is aweful - this seem to be an Garmin Connect Software issue. But it is disappointing when this function is reset after every single software update. Changing the navigation course during an activity is not possible. The only solution in this case is to use komoot via smartphone or cancel the current Gran Fondo activity. No - by sure - this Garmin Edge 830 is not a good product imho. On a scale 1 to 10 the result is 4. I would save the money next time and choose Wahoo if there is no progress in user interface and software.

This guy doesn't really understand how GNSS works, or the differences between different GNSS satellite constellations. Many people refer to "GPS" when what they really are referring to is GNSS. GPS is the location constellation that the US Military maintaines, allowing civilians to access with less accuracy. Glonass is the Russian equivalent. Galileo is a joint European equivalent. Running something like "GPS + Galileo" is simply using those two constellations, meaning that your device is likely to localise off of more satellites. Use a GNSS analyzer to figure out which constellations make the most sense to use in your area.
