Here in germany, for a few years after you've gotten your licence, you're in a kind of trial period. If they catch you swerving while on a bike, they can actually take it away (the cunts) I'm using my last few weeks before I get my licence to the max by getting absolutely hammered and riding on the road, they can't fo nothing about it now

I have always loved bicycles, since childhood. I am now a 65 year old adult male. After decades of riding I found a better way. I simply bolted a chinese two stroke engine to my bicycle. I can now go faster than 95% of normal traffic while retaining all of the annoying bicycle habits such as ignoring traffic signals, signs and lanes. I also get to annoy people with the whole two stroke thing while also being able to easily outrun anyone who takes umbrage. I find it a much cheaper alternative to a car, but everything you said about weather is true. A good rainstorm makes me want a $500 Facebook Marketplace AU falcon. I also carry a nice fist sized rock to promote good driving manners.

You can protect your bike by using my method. Getting a rusty kmart bicycle from facebook marketplace for $100. I probably don't even need to use the bike lock because all of the rust and the bent fenders convince everyone it is not worth stealing. In all seriousness, I have been shocked watching what other cyclists do on the road. I can't help but think some of them must be straight-up suicidal. Seen people cutting off the trams, riding through red lights just dodging traffic, riding slowly in front of traffic - not sure how they aren't scared of being bludgeoned to death from a road rage induced tradie.
