Straight to the point and no american style waffle, you've definitely got my vote, however I own a 1998 93 hatchback, just turned 35k miles (was a caravan tug I guess), thankfully not a turbo so no oil strainer issues, had cambox off today, clean as a whistle. If you could give some tips on the earlier models that would be most helpful, there are still a few of us old skoolers knocking about. Best wishes.

Me again! I found another boot ingress point and it took me nearly 2 years to figure out where this water was coming from!!! The small bodywork panel that runs left to right under the rear window, if you look at the joint whjere it meets the rear quarter, you`ll see it has factory sealant in there (the thick stiff stuff). On my Saab, the paint had worn off it and it was crumbling away. The rain was seeping through this panel gap and into the boot, dripping off the bodywork over the fuse panel on the LH wheel arch. For years i thought it was running in through the shark fin, but fixed that and still leaking. Then i thought maybe the roofrack mounting holes. Fixed those and still leaked. Eventually i was bored enough to lie in the boot while it poured with rain and that's when i found it!

Hi BoltonLadnScouser, i’m having the same symptoms as you described. I’ve tried many different things but still the car gets wet in the LH wheel arch. I’m reading your message with lots of interest but I’m not exactly sure where to find the leak you described and how to fix it. Can you give me some advice to stop this leak. Thanks in advance!

@@HoiDaar Almost feels like this is a perfect time to say the old addage "This thread is useless without pictures!" lol. I`ll try to explain. Open your boot lid and watch in the video at aorund 4:32 where he points to a corner near the hinge part. The flat piece of body panel going across from left to right under the rear window is joined to each rear quarter with some factory sealant. It`s this that failed for me.

@BoltonLadnScouser thanks a lot for explaining this, really appreciate it. Despite the pictures I managed to find the spot you’re mentioning. At my Saab the paint there is also worn off and crumbling away. I’ve put some strong tape over it to see if it stops leaking now. How did you solve the issue?
@BoltonLadnScouser

@@HoiDaar I jammed in some silicone sealant and ran the bead as high as i could under the rear window itself and moved the rubber boot seal to go as high up as i could on that side too. I feel this isnt a great long lasting fix, but it was more about just stopping the rain coming in and ruining my car any more.

@@BoltonLadnScouserthanks for your reply, I think this is the point where my Saab leaks as well. Although there is still coming in some water coming in, it’s reduced now that I put some tape over it. Did you put sealant under the whole width of the rear window?

Good info Cyd, I can add a little to this. I caught one of my rear lights (Red: pre 08) with a golf bag, and it pulled the seal away on a good half of the cover, I carefull pulled the cover off completely and cleaned inside. TOP TIP: only ever use furniture polish on plastics, perspex, acrylic, polycarbonate ( my area of expertise) I then used a bead of Soudal crystal clear adhesive ( available from screwfix and other places) sealed perfectly, invisible and like new.

Thanks for that tip, really useful. You are quite correct - never use anything abrasive on the internal surfaces of the unit. Those silver surfaces especially. That's aluminium applied by vapour deposition and it is a very very thin layer. Hit it with anything abrasive and you'll take it off.

I took it as an opportunity to customise my lights and with the black wrap I've applied I didn't mind using black sealer, but it would show through otherwise. There are plenty of options including clear silicon, but most clear adhesives should work ok. I'd suggest you check your other lights make sure the lens isn't coming loose. Nice catch though. 👍👍

Great video. This helped me figure out where my boot leak was coming from although it was not from any of these areas mentioned. The source of my leak, which was dripping right on top of the area around the amplifier, was coming from the section of rubber running down between the rear window and the c-pillar. This had badly rotted. I used the same type of silicon sealant and it cured it immediately.

while you have the boot seal off, clean the trough thoroughly and apply a coating or three of good wax. This will help water flow to the side channels and carry away small dust and debris that would otherwise stick in the trough. My wife's 2013 Impala has the same issue, that trough is like a dirt magnet. On first viewing of my '08 9-3, I knew it was a problem area. Cheers!

Have 9.3 convertible 2005 - found source of water leak today on right hand side - aerial that fits onto tonneau cover - took off cleaned everything - treated with silicone 🙏 Fitted new boot seal - old one was easy to pull off as original mastic was very brittle ! Surprisingly not a touch of corrosion on body of boot frame ! put silicone sealant on body frame - then fitted seal - seems to bed easier ? Checked lights whilst at it ! Bone dry since fitting new seals Hopefully fixed it ! Thanks for inspiring me to do it 😊

Great video - really helped...think my leak on a 2008 9-3 TiD is the around the shark fin aerial which is looking worse for wear. I've noticed wetness around the amp in the boot. I pushed my hand up inside and to the back where amp is and found the foam to be wet (not drenched). I think this has started interfering with the stereo (recently noticed hiss on door speaker and slight popping when changing radio stations but stereo works apart from that). Did you say you had a video or were doing one on how to replace the aerial?
@CycloneCyd

If I were you, I'd seal up all possible sources. Never forget when fault finding that there could always be more than one fault. Yes, I am intending to do a shark fin replacement video. Right now I'n doing a headlight rebuild series, which was more urgent due to the state of the light output. I needed to do it before winter. The shark fin is only for GPS and phone antennas, so if you use neither of those you could replace it with a dummy fin bit.ly/dummy_fin. If you still need the GPS aerial, you could replace it with one of these bit.ly/Shark_fin_GPS Check the connections to the amp. Any signs of corrosion, give them a clean and make sure they are thoroughly dry before reconnecting

Also, check the seal around the vent. You will need the rear bumper off to access this. Remove the vent and carefully clean it.You will find the seal perished under the dirt. The seal cannot be removed so dry it thoroughly and seal over the rubber with silicone bath sealer. The nearside failed on my Cabriolet possibly due to drying out with heat front the rear silencer. After clipping the vent back in seal around the edge, smoothing with a wet finger. Allow to cure and water test then refit the bumper.

Have a look at 2 things: 1. the aircon drain - underneath your clutch foot, roughly under the car. A rubber lips type thing, easily blocked. 2. the scuttle drain - It's in the bottom of the scuttle cavity like the one on the passenger side kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJTIn6GlmrN2h80 just reach down and feel for it. Again, easily blocked

Regarding the rain channel at the base of the back window. I have found that if I park on a slope, nose up, this channel acts as a trough, and overflows into the boot before it drains away at the side. Probably CC's silicon seal trick on the rubber will help guard against this. Conversely, if I park nose down on a slope, the water accumulates at the two corners. I have not (yet) seen it get into the boot in these circumstances, but it looks like it could. Best to park these cars on the level if you can.

My car is a Saab 93 2007 estate and I think all those problems where addressed in the estate version from factory in someways, cause the backlights seals never had any problem at all. I recently had to change both sides cause I cracked them bumping into angled pillars when reversing, and the water passages where very clean behind around the seal. Also My OCD won’t let me mount new ones without cleaning all the area behind the lamp (you haven’t cleaned in your Saab, Cyd hehehehe) Also the side bumper inside hole appears to be round like the bit that comes in from the bumper fixing part. is 'foam tape' good for a seal?? wont foam soak water and leak anyway? how about a 'rubberized foam' seal tape? ive used it on other cars with sucess, and now will do the same on the saab.. the tape you are using, looks like pure foam, the one I will use is more like a soft rubber.. update: just poured water on the tail light and looks like water is coming in not by the tail light, but by a small screw under it that ataches the bumper to the body. this screw screws on a plastic clip inside the trunk area and looks like its 'sealed' with a piece of fabric between the bumper and body.. removed tail light and its seal looks perfect. looks like water is going around the light and coming in by the small screw under it

Yeah, it can be frustrating. At Land Rover we put an awful lot of effort into making our vehicles watertight, but of course, we wade them to almost 2 metres deep❗ Even without the extra wade kits the newer vehicles can forge 800mm water. Car manufacturers rarely wade more than 100mm.
