Cyclops: the most misunderstood Marvel hero

Scott Summers is the original member and longtime leader of the X-men, but he seems to be one of the most disliked characters of the group. Here's my reasoning on why he's a better character than he's given credit for.

I'd like to say something in hindsight. When I made this video, I hadn't actually read all of New X-men. I researched how the Scott/Emma storyline went down, but that's no substitute for actually reading it. Scott didn't exactly cheat on Jean, he was dealing with the after effects of Apocalypse messing with his sense of self and was seeking therapy. Essentially he wasn't even in his right mind when he did it, and seemed very reluctant to be doing what he was doing with Emma. I stand by most of what I said here, but I might do an update video in the future and go in more detail.

@@waheedsaeed5978 Dude Angel was a founding member of the X-Men he payed for the whole X-Factor group and his whole family was behind the whole cure for mutants thing and plus the dudes wings got damaged in a fight and were forced to be amputated and he fell into a deep depression right afterwards and tried to commit suicide but Apocalypse stop him and made him a deal that if he became one of his horsemen he would give him his wings back which he does and gets blue skin and metal wings that shoot poison tipped projectiles and he was known as the horsemen of death for a little bit but eventually he turned good also the dude can breathe at high altitudes and can fly up to 150 mph and he's an accomplished Martial Artist from training in the danger room and his eyes are resistant to wind rushing into them and the dudes as rich as Batman and plus Cyclops and Wolverine weren't the only ones that wanted Jean Grey Angel did too.

I think people among both fans and writers are too harsh towards modern Cyclops. Not only most of his actions during AvX were justified, he's also proclaimed himself a terrorist so humanity and mutantkind could be united by having a common enemy. Yes, he killed Xavier, but not only he was controlled by Phoenix, Xavier also used him and lied to him. If Jean can be forgiven because she wasn't herself as Phoenix, why Scott can't? TLDR: Cyclops Was Right.

I absolutely see what you're saying, but the thing about Scott killing Xavier for me is that even though he was controlled by the Phoenix Force, the fact that HE did it of all people leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It destroys that moment in God Loves, Man Kills for me, and I think people in general, regardless of how Scott is written, will always remember him as "the guy who killed Xavier." Any time people bring that moment up, I never hear them mention that he was controlled by the Phoenix, even people who are very knowledgeable about comics like GodzillaMendoza, and I think that shows the level of damage that moment did to his character's reputation.

Cyclops held the line. He was very much the soldier fighting for a bright future but having to weathering darkness by choice, making sacrifices of himself First and Foremost. His mutant "revolution" in D.C. was beautiful and felt like an internal reboot, trying to get back on track. My issue with the whole cheating thing was that you can easily say that Emma manipulated him mentally in to the relationship, because if I'm remembering correctly his mental defense's weren't as strong yet and to resist types on the level of Jean and Emma.

I agree on the Madelyne situation, as Cyclops found peace with himself and found peace with Jean's death. I don't agree with the Emma situation. Emma was brought in specifically to help rehabilitate Scott, who was mindfucked by Apocalypse. Emma herself could better relate to Scott's current mindset, which led to the psychic affair. But even before that, he was growing more and more distant from Jean due to everything Apocalypse did to him. Also, "edgy"Cyclops is still awesome, and he did nothing wrong.

even Chris Claremont regretted that situation. he and Stan Lee were planning on retiring the originals, starting with Scott and slowly moving on. Chris introduced Storm in order to take Scott's place as the leader while Wolverine will act as the counterbalance who will help him leave the X-Men. Additionally, Chris wanted to portray Jean as more than a mascot support/ damsel in distress like MJ to someone essential and thus she became the phoenix. But her death ruined the happy ending he planned, and thus Maddy was created as a replacement. Ten years later, things are going smoothly until Avengers writer Roger Stern want to add market value and shocking twists to the story and thus brought Jean back. Thus begun the fall of Scott Summers.

Thanks for doing this. This guy is like my favorite character from Marvel. What I feel is nobody gets that he is not just the leader of the x men. He's the de facto leader and face of the mutant race. He had to be stubborn and make sometimes because of what he had on his shoulders. And,I felt like the people close to him never really understood that. Especially Logan. And,especially Hank McCoy. Never underrated. Just never truly understood or appreciated.

Cyclops has been my favorite X-Man since I first found out about the team in the late 80’s. I completely agree with the poor writing for some of the decisions made for Scott. At his core he’s always been in love with Jean and he’s always been a hero. His very first issues show him shying away from Jean because he was terrified he’d hurt her with his power. Interestingly he lets the others (Beast, Iceman, and Angel) to hit on her feeling he had no chance. He went to work on the Danger Room (specifically one of those giant spiked balls) and Jean comes in and says “wow” looking at Scott in his uniform. She quickly covers up by saying “This room it’s amazing.” Or something like that. But she had the hots for him since day 1!!!! Scott’s tactical and leadership abilities are beyond awesome. Even Nick Fury has said “The less time he has to make a plan the better that plan usually is.” Really just an awesome character and I hope they do right by him in the MCU.

I dream of one day seeing the Freedom Fighters in a Sonic game one day. The edge I believe that the Freedom Fighters have over the game cast(Amy, Knuckles, Chaotics etc.) is that they grew up with Sonic, so they know him well. So it makes their team that much more awesome.

The difference is that Logan is liked BECAUSE of his flaws. He's a near immortal depressed alcoholic with a chip on his shoulder, Scott's flaws are viewed differently because he's held to a higher standard. It's like when you have two siblings who are adults, one will get looked at differently than the other.

I like your video but I’m also astonished you failed to mention his time during the House of M -Schism timeline where his leadership skills transcended to its speak. The X-men fighting for survival while protecting Hope Summers proving his leadership and tactical to a whole new level. He rallied the X-men alongside Emma Frost, managed have villains and anti heroes like Magneto, Toad and Namor work as X-men, United them all in Utopia, defeated Norman Osborn and the Dark Avengers (a team with 2 gods like Sentry and Ares), survives and lead them against a massive invasion force of Selene’s mutant zombie army and later on Bastion’s army of Sentinels. I like the Claremont version, he was amazing but to me the House of M-Schism is to me my favorite iteration of Cyclops because he was put in the worst situation mutants ever faced, the stakes were extremely high and managed to lead to victory against impossible odds with so little, kept Hope Summers alive in order for her in AvX to repopulate the mutant gene once again through Phoenix. He was right the entire time where even Captain America admitted that to him in prison.

I don't count the unfaithfulness of Scott, like how you don't count the whole "left my family for Jean" thing; it was bad writing. The writer at the time said at many cons and even an interview for some internet youtube channel, that he wanted Frost to be the leader and then gave his distaste for Cyclops and Jean. Then during those 5 years he does nothing. He was nearly written out of the comic, until Frost needed someone to bail her out or to blame. If you ask, me 2000- 2009 (2010'ish) was Scott at his worst. At least in the "Marvel Now" era Scott started to return to his former self (given there was a lot image like stuff being done with him, like he telling his younger self to stay away from Jean-- that was stupid) and everyone around him just turned stupid or got super hyper specific amnesia all of the sudden. 2000 Scott you can argue wasn't even him.

I loved Cyclops back in the 90s. He was one of my favorit X-Men (besides Gambit, Rouge, Nightcrawler and Jean). When years later I found the Marvel wikia and read what Marvel did to his character I was heavently shocked. Since then when someone ask me for my favorite X-men when it comes to cyclops I always say "Cyclops before 2000".

Being a Cyclops fan is a lonely place so it's nice to see more fans. Couple things the retcon with Cyclops being influenced by Pryor's dormant abilities made the whole leaving her much easier to swallow and really showed an aspect of Cyclop's development that rarely gets addressed. He has been constantly manipulated. First Sinister. Than in multiple ways Xavier as shown in Deasly Genesis. It was pretty clear X had no issue manipulating Scott to keep him as a soldier. Pryor taking him away from his family via manipulation makes it easy to understand when the call went out he returned. Yes it was all editorial backdrop but it did get fixed just that never is discussed. Than Apocalypse happened and it was terrible for a bit there. But I never really held it against him. Was it wrong sure but again manipulation led to it. Than theres the greatest sin committed against him and it's by future Jean. She literally psychically forced him into a relationship with Emma. Argue all you want about the grim future that came from Cyclops leaving the X-Men and falling into despair; the means do not justify the ends. She did the one thing her and Xavier preached about nonstop. Using their powers to take free will from him without batting an eye. Just like Xavier in Deadly Genesis. Trask? Never? Magneto? God forbid (well for a while anyway)! Cyclops the son I never had (oh wait)? My husband? Is it Tuesday? Ok we're good to mind f him. He is constantly betrayed by those who say they love him. It's the real tragedy that is Cyclops and a big part of why I find him interesting. Also when he was controlled by the Phoenix him putting Xavier down was just a culmination of the sins Xavier committed getting his just deserts. Ironic that he got killed by the man he controlled for years while he was being controlled by another entity.

As much as I love Scott, I've never been a fan of how Xavier and Jean have been handled in recent years, especially Xavier. It's just sad that Marvel couldn't allow him to just be the good person he was supposed to be and tore him down into something shadier.

Xavier is a tricky subject. It's worth noting that even under the helm of Stan Lee he wasn't exactly a pleasant individual and had manipulated ppl as he saw fit; albeit he was never shown using his abilities to do so. So the eventual fall of Xavier felt at least ok. Onslaught was the culmination of that though. The Danger incident and Deadly Genesis felt a bit heavy handed. As for Jean I can agree she was a victim of the writers. Claremont's run and her fall was amazing. Her return was what led to her complete waste of a character. She could have resounded as a cautionary tale and sacrifice for years following her death but nope its significance got completely washed away by a "it wasn't me" cop out. Sad really.

Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, is not only my favourite X-Men, he is my favourite Marvel superhero. I am not a fan of the Fox X-Men movies because the plot focuses were misguided. The emphasis on Wolverine diminished the relevance of the rest of the team, and especially Cyclops. I hope they don’t make the same mistake with the MCU version. Scott and Jean are the central focus of the X-Men. Also, there are quite a few occasions were Cyclops has had to over power the X- Men or neutralize them, and he accomplishes it successfully. It speaks to his cunning and prowess as a leader and tactician. Hollywood screen writers don’t seem to get the true essence of Cyclops. He is the man, if not the X-Man... .

Other nice thing the Xmen anime does for Cyclops is it shows how the team rely on Cyclops as a leader, including Wolverine. All of them pretty much agree that there is no team without Scott and even though Wolverine clashes with him all the time, he always falls in line whenever Scott makes a decision and follows his lead.

To be honest Cyclops became even better during and after AvX. He made the world a better place with powers he didn't want and only went on the offensive when the Avengers kidnapped Hope Summers. People ignore the atrocities committed by Wolverine or Scarlet Witch but Cyclops kills 1 man in self defence while possessed and he's the bad guy!

Same here, I was introduced to the X-men through the movies and even though he didn't have much to do I always thought he was cool, and my school library actually had an issue of the Evolution tie in comic that just so happened to be Cyclops focused, so that helped. I haven't seen '97 yet aside from clips, since I don't have Disney Plus, but I was blown away that they did the Madelyn thing at all, let alone how well it looks like they handled it. I would've figured they'd just make Cable Jean's son directly.

I never misunderstood Cyclops. He had amazing back story involving his powers. I remember him still very much being liked by fans of the Xmen, but I think his appeal is always somewhat lessoned because he wasn't as flexible or as expansive as other characters. Nor was he ever really given his own villians. He played off well with Wolverine who was the cool renegade while he was the straight arrow leader But his capacity in the Leadership role falls short because Prof X exists.

Cyclops has always been my favorite X-man and Marvel character period since the 1970's & 1980's. I am 54 now, but have always found his character to be relatable and engaging. I thought he had the right tempermant , ( especially in the early years ) to deal with the constantly changing cast of teammates to come and go through that team, and try and stay level headed through all the up and downs through his life, not to mention the team, ( and try and do the best thing for the good of the world ) . I have not followed comics much since 1990, but Scott will always have a special place in comic lore for me. ( Sad that their have been no actor good enough to bring his character to life on the big screen, but then again he is not a one dimensional character; you would have to really study him to catch all the small subtleties of him.

I think the FOX-Men movies had a huge role in destroying his character too, because those were entirely focused on making wolverine the center of attention they removed all of the team leader and Professor Xavier bond from cyclops and gave it to Logan, Plus they kind of made you want Wolverine to end up with Jean, the movie places cyclops as the cock block character which is horrible because he’s the one getting homewrecked

I really don’t have a problem with the AvX story line. He was possessed by the Phoenix force and Xavier was trying to shut down his mind (kill him) and under the influence of the Phoenix he killed him. I think it’s been very well established that the Phoenix is a corrupting force.

I'm ok with people calling him boring. I think superman and batman and aquaman ans many DC characters are boring.... so, why would I have a problem with Cyclops being called a boring character too?. He was a boy scout, he was THE leader, he needed to be the most mature and responsible X Men for many, many years, so.. that is ok. But I dont agree with people saying that he is a dick, and that he has a jerk personality because of the movies, the first 3 X Men movies. Casual fans tends to think that, and that is not true.

Now this is all super subjective I've acctually really enjoyed the heel direction they've pushed him in. (Tho I'll agree that the bad stories are bad and out of charachter. They where just catalysts for more interesting future arcs with the concept) To me so much about Cyclops always felt too default. The majority of his personality felt tied around being a good leader, but his main flaw, his deficiency in charisma and insecurity always put his leadership into question. Whenever a leader has to bring up the fact that they are the leader to settle a dispute, it's hard not to loose a little respect for them. And to me it felt like that happened a ton. That because the X-Men are such a diverse group of people a lot of drama was pulled from people disagreeing with him. But his position rarely felt like it was acctually in danger because come on, he's Cyclops, he's the leader, what else could he be? So shaking him up from that usual routine feels refreshing to me. Tho I completely get how y'all feel.

That's the point, what matters to me is the majority of a character's history. When a character is established to be a certain way for most of their history, that's what everything else has to measure up to. Cheating doesn't make Cyclops disgusting, it's a very human flaw. Let's be honest Jean was very close to cheating with Wolverine in many occasions, if they haven't. It's been revealed that Jean Grey's bedroom has doors within the room accessible to both Cyclops and Wolverine's bedrooms, so it's very likely that she did sleep with Wolverine.

The problem with the first XMen movie of 2001 is that the actor playing Cyclops wasn't much there, and High Jackman shined as Wolverine. It also had to do with mediocre writing. So the producers started giving much more protagonism to Hugh Jackman and much less to Cyclops' character, and that stain has sullied Cyclops' character in the movies. But you're spot on: in the cartoons Cyclops is much more intelligent, crisper personality and has much more protagonism, just like in the comics.

Hale Berry also complained (afterwards) of the limited screen time she was given taking into consideration that Storm is a senior member of The X-Men, and later dropped the character. I blame Brian Singer, the director, for the debacle: he wanted Wolverine over everybody else.

I like edgy Slim. He was too "black vs white" in the old days. When he formed X-Force, I began to like him soooo much more. He showed his strategy skills and the lengths he'd go for his cause. Emma Frost and Slim are anti-heroes in AvX... and again in IvX. In the end, he was right. The Phoenix came to do exactly what he thought it would do. Plus what he did to the skills during their invasion: a thing of beauty. What makes Cyke better for me is the same reason Marvel characters are generally better than DC: character driven internal struggles. It's like Cyke adopted some of Batman's mentality and he and Wolverine swapped moral places.

Cyclops and Emma don't actually have a romantic relationship in the X-Men Anime. Cyclops actually hates her for most of the series. When Jean dies in the series he actually sees Emma right before she dies and thinks she caused it somehow. To make it short, its a misunderstanding with Mastermind making an illusion. Scotts arc has more to do with forgiving Emma and admitting he's wrong more than any kind of romance.

Ppl just think negatively of Cyke because of the horrible "FoX-men" movies (where he was played against the more likeable Logan as rivals).That bleed over into other media, including the comics. Many ppl don't get Cyclops' dry wit, so it's played down more & more. Since his powers are pretty one-dimensional, & his personality doesn't stand out as much as others, ppl deem Cyke "a boring character".
