In this video we bore the cylinders out on the 7.25 " Gauge Steam Locomotive Build the Bridgeport milling machine and the Harrison 12" swing lathe. I also hone the bores when the machining process is finished.
I took my time on these cylinders as this is the first time I've ever done such machining. I was very lucky to have had the advice of my friend Chris who has undertaken machining large cylinders similar to these, so a huge thank you to him.

Great video mate 👏👏 I’m going to bore my 5” gge. cylinders on the Mill ( 1 1/2” bores.. by about 3” long). This… after having faced the casting ends parallel using an expanding mandrel, and an aluminium sleeve in the fettled cast bores. After watching this, I’ll now add an extra step, and skim the rear faces again on the mandrel in the finished bore . Thanks for that tip 👍 Regards Robert

Hi Robert, Thank you that is much appreciated. Yes a little tip I was taught by a seasoned pro, glad to hear its useful to others. Hope all goes smoothly with your cylinders, I'd be able to do that bore length on the Bridgeport, the quill will do 5". All the best, Matt 👍

Gotta say, moving cast iron just sounds good 😅 Also, and I know there's at least three ways to do anything, but blondiehacks taught me to not never do a spring cut with boring bars because they don't like shallow cut, and you're just asling for chatter.
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right, there are many ways to do the same job. Now what Blondiehacks has taught you is correct for the size of machine she has, which is small hobby, the machine doesn't have the rigidity and the small tools are prone to deflection as they have no meat to them. Compared to her, I'm using a colossal size machine, its industrial size and so is my tooling, I don't suffer with these issues. All the best, Matt 👍

Now then Kev, definitely so, but haven't you just got the woolly jumper as you're on your second time round? 😂. I will admit I did enjoy doing them, not the mess, and thought I should maybe go straight onto machining another set of them, that soon past!! I don't know if I will hit 100, there is a lot to do on this loco still. All the best, Matt 👍

Well done again Matt, a lot of viewers will have no idea how much time, effort and dedication it takes to initially setup then machine said parts. It’s a lot! As I know from experience, so congratulations on the progress so far, it’s a pleasure watching you and your sense of humour 👍

Thanks Brian, your kind comments are very much appreciated. A lot of the time the the setup of the workpiece takes longer than the actual job to machine, not with these cylinders 😂. All the best, Matt 👍

Hi Matt, Forgive me for asking but wouldn't it have been safer to do the boring in the Bridgeport as you have more secure clamping and more rigid boring with a better chance of higher accuracy?
@MattChiversWorkshop
@MattChiversWorkshop 2 ай бұрын
Hi Moking, the reason I didn't use the milling machine is I don't have power feed on the Bridgeport. The quill only has a 5" travel, and these cylinders are about 6". All the best, Matt. 👍🚂

To quickly centre the cylinder is the 4 Jaw chuck, could you bring a pipe centre (cone) up to it from the tailstock and get it almost centred first off?

This is 100% true and I would have done it this way, just one small issue...... I don't own one, yet! 😂. I'm building this with a very limited amount of tooling believe it or not. One is one the list. All the best, Matt 👍

Great job mate. I wonder how much a machine shop would charge for those cylinders! That's one thing I never had experience in in the way of pricing up jobs

Thanks Dermot, A lot of money to have them machined, they would have done it a lot faster, but would have cost a small fortune. All the best, Matt 👍
