Nobody likes a cold workshop! Before I put heat in mine, I would avoid going out very often when it was too cold. Could you have used dowel pins instead of the cap screws to maintain position or is it also important to keep them tight to the cylinder?
@MattChiversWorkshop3 күн бұрын
Yes it's important to keep the chest tight to the cylinder. This will not only help keep the lower seal intact if we need to take the cover off but will also help keep the chest in position when we set the valve gear timing. All the best, Matt 🚂👍

Matt, I don't know a thing about metal working, and enjoy your channel very much. I'm curious, being as cold as it is, is there any significant risk of parts machined when it's that cold getting wonky when it gets hot? Also thank you for hoovering all those bits of metal. I'm sure the camera makes your hands look closer to all those corkscrew razorblades then they really are but I still get a bit puckered watching you work. 😆
@MattChiversWorkshop3 күн бұрын
So, without getting into Metallurgy and boring you to death, the simple answer is No, there is no risk. Bronze is a funny material to work with though, when machining holes in it, it prefers to be cold. As for those little corkscrew razorblades, the ends of my fingers are a tough as old boot leather, over the years my hands have got use to the manual work and sharp objects. All the best, Matt 👍🚂

I maybe British, but I'm a Northern Lancashire Lad, we are as hard as nails! It's cold and wet here most of the time, hence us having webbed feet 😂. We are stupid enough to work in all weathers. Yes we are nearly there!! All the best, Matt 👍🚂
@47606odin6 күн бұрын
Braver than me lol. You could have put a bit of tape over the steam passages to stop the swarf going in and disappearing down the holes. Looking forward to the next episode (where you discover your bronze has warmed up to more than brass monkey temperatures, expanded and the reamed hole is now oversized 😂) Have fun
@MattChiversWorkshop5 күн бұрын
Darn it.... that is a good idea... Blooming obvious really!! Next time you're ever over here you need to come visit us in damp Lancashire and we will get the steam engine out and have a play!! All the best from us here in brass monkey weather, Matt 👍🚂

no one is going to ask why Mallard is wearing the name The Flying Scotsman on top of his smokebox
@MattChiversWorkshop8 күн бұрын
Because particular services had/have train names, “The Royal Scott”, “Caledonia”, “Goldern Arrow” etc. and the “Flying Scotsman” which were on headboards of the train like this one. The Flying Scotsman was actually a passenger service before the locomotive was named. The locomotive was named after the passenger service! So in this instance the service is ‘The Flying Scotsman’ hauled by the locomotive’Mallard’. Hope that explains it.

It’s a BXA post, from what I can see. So you can get holders for that that will hold 20mm tools, or at least 3/4”, but I suspect they’ll hold 20mm. I’ll have to check mine, if I remember, tomorrow. WD-40 does repel water very well. But it’s designed to evaporate after some time and then it doesn’t protect. It’s also excellent for cleaning oil and grease off. Right after rinsing parts that I’ve used Evaporust on, I spray it with Wd-40 and that prevents flash rust. But it’s just not intended for long term rust prevention.
@MattChiversWorkshop12 күн бұрын
Hi Mel, Yes you can get the bigger tool holders, just not here in the UK, they seem to be like unobtainium!! Buying them from overseas the shipping costs are ridiculous! All the best Matt 👍🚂

Come on Matt. Think laterally! Dig a cellar - loads of room then and you can build a hydraulic hoist as well. You mentioned a build trolley. Must admit that when Harry is finished mine is heading for the scrap bin. @MattChiversWorkshop13 күн бұрын
I’d love to… but it was a video that popped up in my feed after watching some workshop rust videos! Regarding Colin, notice how rusty the built section of the new bit is in front of his garage! He’s coated that with WD in an earlier video and it’s gone rusty! Tunnel and bunker are ok as they are pretty much temp controlled and insulated with concrete. Be all fine when it’s all closed in…. Maybe. Still fun to watch. All the best, Matt 👍🚂

Dear Matt Another great video. With respect to your last one, when you made the sheet metal pieces to go over the cylinders, you drilled the required holes with a regular twist drill. May I recommend you track down some "step drills". These are shortish, cone shaped bits with up to 5 or 6 (or more) different diameter sections so one bit can drill holes from say 1/8" to 1/2" in 1/16" increments. I'm sure metric ones are made as well. They are specifically for drilling sheet metal and cut neat tidy holes with minimum burrs etc. I think the smallest diameter available is 1/8", but the largest diameter one I have will cut 1 1/8" diameter. Over here in Canada, Unibit and Lennox are 2 good quality brands. I would emphasize buying only good quality name brands as the cheap imports are not accurate and blunt very easily. See what you think. Best wishes from Canada. Paul (ex pat)
