The Honda head bolts can be reused. I had the head surfaced by a machine shop but just enough to make flat. It needed very little taken off

they can be used, but IMO with experience with honda car motors its ill advised... they tend to stretch.... but ive done it once on a honda d16y7 motor... motor failed to another blown head gasket 80k later though head was good still but those bolts stretch ever so slightly.. if reusing i recommend rechecking torque after 100miles or so.... to be safe... i love your videos i just bought my first gl1100! thanks!

Don’t need copper coat. Honda headgaskets have built in adhesive sets during heat cycles. Re use head bolts ok. Just clean them and the holes well. Put moly grease in head bolts! Torque to 45. Start 15, 25, 30, 35.then finally 45. Low bolt is 12 I think. Glue 120 grit sand paper to thick glass and do fiqure eights with head to prepare surface. Lots of sanding after razor blade. I used a stone on the block. Honda headgaskets only. B sure to lap valves with lap compound. To get good seal. New valve seals too. Good luck

You gotta love the people on KZbin sometimes.... Steel head bolts screwing into an aluminum block and people are asking if you should reuse the headbolts because their threads might stretch? I wonder why every bike shop I've ever worked in has a draw full of metric heli-coils?

Great video Im planning on doing this to my 81 GL1100 How long on avg does it take to do each side from start to finish? Honda quoted me 10 hrs???

10 hrs may not be excessive if they’re removing plastics, getting the radiator forward to work the belts etc

Ok thx for your info Im going to tackle it this weekend I noticed today oil in my over flow, and huge bubbles in my rad when I tried starting my bike 3 of my 4 plugs were super oily

Why does the manual say the head bolts are 10mm(my socket says 14mm) and tighten them down to 40ft lbs?

Great question...Yes You must only use a 10 mm socket on all the head bolts tightened to 40 ft lbs.

What about re-using the head bolts? Can they be re-stretched? What torque would you use for re-use?

Doesn't the head need some sort of planing, rectification or checking on a machinists level? Don't they warp?
