One more example of this show being ahead of its time how honestly it showed the plight of homelessness in one little montage and one beautiful heartbreaking rendition, the show was so brilliantly written that’s all it needed, rest in peace you sweet hilarious angels

Throughout the song, you can actually see the actresses faces change. Not just the characters but the actors as well. Even if it was just played out, they feel the realism behind this scene and how serious it is

I've been homeless before, but I never had to stay at a shelter and I count myself incredibly lucky and grateful for that. I went through some bad stuff, but my experiences are nothing compared to those in this world that have nothing at all to call their own, the ones who go face constant turmoil every day... the people you never seem to hear or see. Now that I'm in a comfortable position in my life, I regret that I can't do much to help out others. I feel like I'm almost dishonoring my life experiences by not acknowledging the ones still going through them. I'm sorry.

"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?", also sung as "Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?", is one of the best-known American songs of the Great Depression. Written in 1930 by lyricist E. Y. "Yip" Harburg and composer Jay Gorney, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" was part of the 1932 musical revue Americana; the melody is based on a Russian-Jewish lullaby Gorney's mother had sung to him as a child. It was considered by Republicans to be anti-capitalist propaganda, and almost dropped from the show; attempts were made to ban it from the radio. The song became best known, however, through recordings by Bing Crosby and Rudy Vallee. They were released right before Franklin Delano Roosevelt's election to the presidency. The Brunswick Crosby recording made on October 25, 1932 with Lennie Hayton and his Orchestra became the best-selling record of its period, and came to be viewed as an anthem to the shattered dreams of the era.

This episode really puts everything in perspective. Makes you realize that even in our worst times, someone has it worse than we do. I mean, I've had at least 6 brain surgeries, which has made me prone to seizures, was on chemo then radiation. I lost my grandpa, grandma, aunt, 2 uncles, and mom, but at least I have a roof over my head and know I'm going to eat tomorrow. Can't say that about a lot of people out there. Truly sad :'( I love how the episode ends with them handing over the ticket to the priest. They know that living in excess isn't as important as having a place to live. Hell, I still live in my grandma's house, where a lot of things are worn down and don't exactly work right anymore and we don't exactly get much income, but we make do with what we got and we get by

Ugh, so true. I’m 23 and have limited vision (can’t drive) and a chronic illness and autism. I still live with my parents. Our family is the poster child for broken. We’re broke, but American broke. We still have streaming services, clothes and books and things. We have food and lovely dogs. We’re alive and overall healthy. It’s scenes like this that pop in my head to remind me that it can be so much worse. It’s humbling. Man in the Mirror plays in my head too whenever I start feeling sorry for myself. Gotta be thankful! It could be so much worse.💪🫶

I know this episode has gotten a lot of flak over the years and I do get the criticism but I think it being hard to watch is kind of the point. Its more effective than the Christmas episode which also tackles homelessness but does so in a more heavy-handed and preachy way almost resembling a PSA (and the original airing did have them doing a Thousand Points of Light service announcement with President Bush tagged onto the end) - the fact that they've spent the whole episode running around after this jacket with a winning lottery ticket in it and lamenting what they don't have only to be confronted with the reality of homelessness and realizing they've been acting selfish is just a complete gut punch

Not my favorite episode. I don't really like "issues" situation comedy, and I can't stand it when characters get money and lose it/give it away. At least this time it was for a good cause, but I remember a movie where the main guy gives a suitcase with millions of dollars in "dirty" money away to a street corner Santa Claus. It was supposed to be moving, but since Santa was undoubtedly an alcoholic crack addict putting on a suit for money for his next bender my heart wasn't quite as warmed as intended.
