"It's like a miracle, but it's not a miracle--it's science." Brilliant, amazing woman. So much respect for her and her research.

so does growth hormone increase Igf1, because fasting increases growth hormone?

I've been fascinated by this since hearing a snippet of a programme on BBC Radio 4 a couple of years ago. I can by no means profess to understand all the content here but the delivery and passion for the subject makes me want to understand more. Thank you for posting this.

@monineh In theory, yes, if they limit glucose intake. However, there may be associated deficiencies which might affect that outcome.

fascinating, but wouldn't it mean that type 1 diabetics who control their condition well should age more slowly and live longer?

I'm not 100% certain whether insulin-like growth factor 1 is always tightly coupled to insulin itself. it's "insulin-like" rather than insulin. Also, type 1 diabetics have to inject insulin in themselves all the time to survive so the body is not actually free from insulin. one broader point is that it seems as if nutrient clearance is an important factor in lifespan is high lipids and high glucose in the blood are associated with early mortality. Now whether this means that the body is just in distress and this is a sympton and not a cause is not completely clear, but the fact that so many people who live to 100 have mutations with fat-clearing enzymes in the blood does indicate that too many nutrients in the blood is a real problem. So no, you would not suspect that type 1 diabetics would live longer.
