Once it was thought that aging was just a random and haphazard process. Instead, the rate of aging turns out to be subject to regulation by transcription factors that respond to hormones and other signals. In the nematode C. elegans, in which many key discoveries about aging were first made, the aging process is subject to regulation by food intake, sensory perception, and signals from the reproductive system. Changing genes and cells that affect aging can lengthen lifespan by six fold, and can also delay age-related disease, such as the growth of tumors.

Thoroughly enjoying following in your steps in my little biolab, Its considerably easier for me now that technology has moved on, and if I get stuck I can just look at your work, science is fun when you merrily skip along in the footprints carved out by the brilliance of those who went before. Thanks again

Great videos! Are there any updates since this was produced? Doesn't Caloric Restriction work via the Insulin/IGF/FOXO (growth/maintenance) pathway? If so, what pathway(s) do mitochondrial mutations (isp-1, clk-1) work on? Also, If both DAF-2 and the reproductive sterol hormones (dafachronic acid / pregnenolone) act on the same DAF-16, why is there an accumulative effect when both are manipulated? Does the tumor-suppressor, P53, also work off the DAF-16 pathway? At the 20m28s mark, did she mean that germline stem cells keep dividing to replenish the *reproductive oocyte cells*? Finally, do I understand correctly that gld-1 promotes tumors (by preventing apoptosis cell death and increasing mitosis proliferation), however not a late-stage "cancer" because it hasn't gone thru angiogenesis/metastasis... this large metabolic load requires daf2?
