Really love the avenue. I think you should create some type of beds alongside the avenue that you can place all the papyrus pots into and then fill around them with gravel for wind stability (and beauty). Fill with gravel just up over the tops of the pot so you can still see the water peeking through.Perhaps paint the top edges of the pots to match the gravel color? If not gravel maybe you can find shredded automobile tire mulch that would match the pots? As I am thinking creatively, grey weathered wooden platform beds. Maybe even with a custom built in pergola above the papyrus. I know it all sounds a bit much, but you know gardening is art and all art requires a bit of madness. Maybe something I've suggested might spark an idea of your own. Papyrus really pop with night uplighting.
@rooteddaun2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! 😊 Absolutely, a garden is definitely art and something to keep working on. Thanks for all the ideas, all of which I have considered before but just haven’t gotten around to doing it nor have the financial means to build anything more permanent for now. Perhaps in the long run. 😊 Yes, absolutely agree on the uplighting, I’ve done it here and there, just haven’t gotten around to the avenue. Haha. All in good time. It’s quite a lot of work to maintain the avenue so may reduce it to just a few pots dotted about. We shall see. 😁🌿

Oh I’m not too sure. I got mine from a plant seller a while back. He had them growing around his pond. So I managed to propagate them to create the avenue. Someone mentioned the other day as well that it’s not too easy to find in the Philippines. However, I did suggest that he could get the rhizomes from Shopee. Can’t guarantee the quality but it’s an option. Also ensure that it’s Cyperus papyrus and not other species as there are so many out there. Hope this helps.

Hey Osman, I used around 40 but honestly the weekly maintenance and repotting after every few months is overwhelming so I’ll recommend wayyyy less than that. Haha! It’s entirely up to you though, 10 on each side should be just nice to create a mini avenue. Even that would be quite a lot of work in the long run. Only grow what you can handle or if you have help then by all means, grow away. Haha.

I have this plant but it’s only growing to about 3 feet. I think it’s the dwarf version . I have them in 5 gallon pots and always in water. Any tips for getting them to grow bigger or do you think I have the dwarf version. Great video!
@rooteddaun6 ай бұрын
Hey, Neil! What I did to get them bigger and taller, was to repot them as soon as they filled the pot. Just as in the video, cut them in half and add soil as well as fertiliser. Initially with a full pot of shoots, mine were around 6ft, then they progressively got taller with thicker shoots with each repotting session. The tallest they got in a 5 gallon pot was between 9-10ft. I’m sure with consistent care, they could have exceeded that. There are many varieties of the Cyperus plant. If with consistent repotting (every few months) they don’t get any taller, then you might have one of the other species and not papyrus. Thanks, and hope this helps!
@neileyre60193 ай бұрын
Many thanks mate. I have come to the conclusion that I have the dwarf version. I did manage to find a place that sells this same variety as you have; I will get some early next year and will let you know how it goes. Hopefully I get them to look as spectacular as yours do. Congratulations on your beautiful collection of plants.

Are the roots invasive if planted in the ground? How interesting.
@rooteddaun2 жыл бұрын
They do root pretty fast but I won’t call them invasive. They love being grown in ponds/lakes or marshy areas. They do spread fairly fast in the right conditions but you can always maintain them by using root barriers or pruning them back. 😊🌿 If grown in the ground without being constantly wet, they will slowly die off. 💦

Is Borneo as rainy as the Philippines during the monsoon? Like, would they really not get rot root during the rainy season? Yes I know they grow along rivers in their native habitat but Egypt pretty much get sun year-round from what I read.
@rooteddaun2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if it rains as much as in the Philippines but we do get the monsoon periods and quite a lot of rain. The only time I have had root rot is when I placed them in shadier spots. So, when the rainy periods hit with a lack of direct sunlight, they couldn’t pull through. As long as they are placed in areas of direct sunlight, they would be fine. Even though there is not much sunlight during those darker periods but they have been fine. 😊🌿

Спасибо большое за видео. скажите пожалуйста а этот вид циперуса размножаются верхушками ??

You’re most welcome. No, Cyperus papyrus can only reproduce through the rhizomes. I’ve read somewhere that it is possible to germinate the seeds but may take a few years to mature. So the best method would be through the rhizomes. Other species can be propagated from the tips/leaves.

Hi please give a name of a really good fertilizer please.
@rooteddaun2 жыл бұрын
Hello there Karen. I use Osmocote slow release fertiliser for the whole garden. You may use the balanced NPK ratio of Osmocote. For example 10:10:10 or 16:16:16. Honestly most fertilisers are good. It all just depends on consistency.

Do you sell these ? I’m in the USA
@rooteddaun6 ай бұрын
I do indeed, Neil. Only around my area here in Borneo though. I’m sure you’ll be able to acquire the Cyperus papyrus plant online or you could always inquire with your local nurseries. Cheers!

@@rooteddaun great! Unfortunately I’ve not been able to find the tall version that you have. I bought some from eBay which said they would grow 10 feet tall but they’re only 3 feet and have been for 3 years. I know they root very well from the head , you wouldn’t consider selling a few heads?

I see, well if that’s the case, do try that method of repotting it every few months. If they are grown from the bare rhizome in a 5 gallon pot, they would need a few repots before achieving that height. Also, monthly fertilising is important, or else the shoots would be thin. Of course, in a body of water such as a pond or lake, they will achieve maximum height with no repotting necessary. Full sunlight throughout the day is important too. Partly shaded areas do not work for them. I do not export any plants/rhizomes, etc overseas as there are quite a lot of rules and regulations, thus only limiting sales to my local area. I do apologise, Neil.

@@rooteddaun many thanks for the info mate, much appreciated. They are in full sun but they are really clumped so thinning might help a lot…I’ll give that a go. On the export..I thought I’d ask anyway, can’t hurt to ask….i fully understand. Your papyrus are magnificent by the way! Great video.

You’re most welcome, Neil! Happy to share. Yes, the clumping could be the main reason as to why they have not reached their full potential. Absolutely, no harm in asking. Cheers for your kind words, and all the best with it!

@@rooteddaun you'd think he'd have Egyptian papyrus bloom columns 🤷🏼 idk I'm autistic sometimes

The house is 30 years old (original brick columns) and I moved in 2 years ago. Don’t think I’d be altering the vernacular of the house with each plant I bring in. It’ll be a mess.. haha! However, the columns you mentioned do sound pretty cool though.

Oh! My bad I didn't realize you were op 😅 the column thing is why I watched the video, believe it or not. I wanted to see if the column actually looked like the papyrus plant. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ_YYWqBmc6XidU Also, great video! It definitely deserves its top result status 🤙🏻
