Almost all cypriots(both greek or turkish) have significant percentage of sephardic and mizrahi jewish

I think that it's rather a Levantine ancestry which is shared by the Cypriots and some Jewish groups and which the MyHeritage algorithm labels as Jewish.

The Jewish dna probably comes from Phonecian ancestors who settled in Cyprus in ancient times. The phonecians were a Cnaanite group from what is now Lebanon and are genetically similar to Judeans (ancestors of the Jews).

I'm not a Cypriot, but these results are NOT surprising to me! It appears that All of these Mediterranean peoples descended upon that island and eventually started mixing together. Greece, Turkey and Italy makes sense, but why so much Jewish? Do you know anyone in your family heritage that could have been Jewish?
@mertozyurekliler945 Жыл бұрын
I have no clue! That part was really surprising for me. I grew up as a ‘Turkish’ Cypriot (although I prefer just Cypriot, especially after this dna test) I was expecting to have some Greek but all the Jewish, I don’t know where that comes from. As far as I am aware my Mother’s side is from Paphos and my Dad’s side is from Inonu(Sinta), a small village in the North that were always inhabited by the Turkish speaking Cypriots. Finding about these results opened my eyes a little, I don’t want to be associated with being either Greek, Turkish or any other ‘mainland’ anymore. I feel like I am just an accumulation of different ethnicities that has stepped foot in Cyprus. I will definitely do some research about Sephardic/Mizrahi Jewish communities after this test 😊

Some history: Ptolemy II Philadelphus was the pharaoh of Ptolemaic Egypt from 284 to 246BC. His wife or sister (can't remember) Arsinoe Philadelphus came and settle in Cyprus. Fast forward during the Roman era. The Jews had close relationships with many of the other religious group in Cyprus from Ptolemais between Alexander Jannaeus and King Lathyros. The Cypriot Jew that was native in Cyprus his name was Barnabas that converted to Christianity and he was preaching at the Jewish synagogues with Paul (Apostle) and Mark (cousin of Barnabas). This explain the Jewishness in you. Us Turk Cypriot are convert.

@@mertozyurekliler945 it doesn’t necessarily mean anything. The thing is that Myheritage is a Israeli company and was in the beginning targeted for the Jewish to discover their roots (many lost their jewish connections and knowledge after the Holocaust). Someone who is Ethiopian and takes the test will get Ethiopian Jewish for example. it’s the only reference population the company has got for Ethiopians. Though still Jewish DNA is easily detectable! Good luck exploring anyway!
