I was a US Marine stationed at an obscure Naval Communications Facility when the Turks invaded. Near Nicosia's airport. When the Turks appeared likely to capture the airport, we destroyed the station and evacuated. Before the fighting erupted, I often drove across the Green Line, in both Nicosia and over the mountains to Kyrenia. Eventually, it became too dangerous.

I just visited Cyprus and was amazed by this country. I also spent lots of time in the northern part of Nicosia. As a tourist, you feel hospitality from both greeks and turks and the border is no inconvenience, since passing it is so easy. Many locals cross back and forth daily but others refuse to even reach out and walk to the other side

Dont let both sides fool you. The second the border reopens you can be sure that they will start tearing each other apart limb to limb like it was 50 years ago. I would want the island seperated and in peace rather than be reunified into chaos…

The same goes with Cyprus as already there are people from all over the world living there. Dear@@yagizakdag5476 . While i could easily start a "beef" with you and go through the same path some always want us to go, i will say just this. The Cyprus issue did not start on 1963. It follows the same patern with so many other former colonies that were intentionally thrown into chaos. So many similar cases are not coincidence. Just the fact that they owe millions to both of us for having the bases here and they never talk about this in any solution plan says a lot. Even the only thing that can help bring peace, our newly found natural resources, in the Anan plan were given to the British bases.

I’m really curious how many of you read your own constitution. 1960-1963 Greek administrators broke the rules and laws of establishment. Turkish intervention is not a result, it is indeed a cause to reestablish the rule of law and most important aspects security of Turkish Cypriots. After 50 years now the only resolution is recognition of two states in the region. They can reach an agreement and continue peaceful lives as neighbors.

the same staement at the end can be completely applicable to the israeli palestinian conflict. I just saw both current episodes in the channel and they were quite neutral the only issue is that you didn't mention the Nakhba and the various massacres conducted by both Jewish and Palestinian militants. Besides this there should be a serious discussion about the distinction between anti semitic remarks and anti israeli remartks because in general at the very least there are not the same thing at all and we should be mindful of valid and honest criticism of zionism as well as the state of israel back then as well as today. Cypriot Greek has often been referred to as a dialect of Greek (Contossopoulos, 2000); a variety that is linguistically proximal to Standard Modern Greek (Grohmann and Kambanaros, 2016 Grohmann et al. 2016), which is the official language in the environment our participants acquire language. Although the official language in education and other formal settings is indeed Standard Modern Greek, research has shown the boundaries between the two varieties, Standard Modern Greek and Cypriot Greek, and their distribution across different registers is not straightforward (Grohmann and Leivada, 2012, Tsiplakou et al. 2016). At times mixing is attested without code-switching being in place, while no official characterization has been provided for any of these terms in this specific context. The question arising in this context is whether the attested variants emerging in mixed speech repertoires are functionally equivalent for an individual speaker. The concept of "competing grammars goes back to Krich 11989, 1991), who proposed that speakers project multiple grammars to deal with ambiguous input This concept has been explicitly connected to the relation between Standard and Cypriot Greek (Papadopo et al. 2014; plaka 2014; Grohman et al 2017) The two varieties have differences in all levels of linguistic analysis and often monolingual speakers of Standard Modern Greek judge Cypriot Greek as unintelligible. At the same time, Greek Cypriot speakers do not always provide reliable judgments of their own speech since these are often clouded by sociolinguistic attitudes toward using the non-standard variety. Cypriot Greek lacks official codification and its status as a different language/variety is often denied by Greek Cypriots who may downplay the differences between Standard Modern Greek and Cypriot Greek and describe the latter as just an accent (Arvaniti, 2010). As the discussion of the different variants will make clear in the next section, the two varieties have differences across levels of linguistic analysis and these differences vastly exceed the sphere of phonetics or phonology. All speakers of Cypriot Greek have exposure to Standard Modern Greek through education and other mediums and in this way, they are competent to different degrees in both varieties. We employ the term 'bilectal' (Rowe and Grohmann, 2013, 2014) to refer to the participants of this study, although it is not entirely clear that the varieties they are exposed to are Standard Modern Greek and Cypriot Greek or that they are only two varieties, under the assumption that a continuum is in place. For instance, the term 'Cypriot Standard Greek' (Arvaniti, 2010) has been proposed to refer to an emerging variety that may count as the standard in the context of Cyprus. This would be a sociolinguistically 'high' variety (Ferguson, 1959) that is used in formal settings, although its degree of proximity with Standard Modern Greek is difficult to determine with precision because great fluidity is attested across different settings and geographical areas. At the school environment, for example, one notices the existence of three different varieties: Cypriot Greek, as the home variety that is used when students interact with each other, Standard Modern Greek, as the language of the teaching material, and another standard-like variety that incorporates elements from both varieties, and is present in the repertoire of both the students and the instructors (Sophocleous and Wilks. 2010; Hadjioannou et al., 2011; Leivada et al.. 2017).

The Ioannides junta felt by itsself. there were no demonstrations. In addition the video that you show about the protests were in November 1973. So a mistake. Greece was not destroyed when Karamanlis arrived. Actually economically and socially was in a very good situation. So another mistake Karamanlis was an opportunist and took advantage of situations. He tried many times to take over and persuade USA to put him in position. After he arrived he banned the royal family of Greece with a bogus refferendum. Currently the Northern part of Cyprus is still illegally occupied by Turkey. It is recognized as a state by Turkey and Azerbaijan while UK and Russia have embassies in the occupied territories and there are "turkish cypriot" embassies in London and in Moscow. Last Saturday February 4th Greek cypriots in the Greek side of the boarder were shot without a reason by Turkish forces. 1 was severelly injured You did not mention that in Attila I and Attila II there were 1600 Greek MIA and 400 Turkish cypriots Missing and now due to the turkish crimes they find their bones but they do not reveal when, how and where these people died. You should mention that and there are many sources in BBC Finally you do not mention the british support and intervention during the Turkish invasion in 1974, as well as the Canadian UN forces that assisted the Turks especially during the battle of the Nicosia airport.

Because in that way it would be evident that Turkey does not care about Turkish Cypriots but its own imperialistic ambitions. A greek and Turkish Cypriot ,are both Cypriots, with common heritage and right to this land. A solution between them is possible, especially if economic ties are strengthen. But, and this is a big one. A Turk from Anatolia that came after the invasion, is not a Cypriot, neither has a right nor heritage to this land, he is, in all modern sense an illegal immigrant living on stolen land. I don't say this to spew hate, but rather to point out the fact that THIS is one of the biggest obstacles of unification of the island. We are at the point where a huge portion of "turkish Cypriots" i dare say even a majority, are NOT cypriots. Imagine how different would the German west and east unification would have been in the 90s if 50% of east Germany was Russian. How would a German (from the west) have reacted?

Well According to my opinion, the key word about the Cyprus issue is ..respect.! RESPECT ..! The main reason that the Republic of Cyprus enters the EEU ,is right exactly for the quarantee and respect of all its citizens human rights.! ALL CYPRIOTS human rights..! Greeks ,Turks, Maronite's, Armenians, Latin's, ..British , ..etc..! No more quarantor powers .! They already ,and the three of them had played enough with their dirty games against us all Cypriots..! TODAY .. for those they don't know.. One ,out of the six members of the Republic of Cyprus, in the European parliament IS a Turkish Cypriot, been elected mainly by the votes of the Greek Cypriots..! About .. 120.000 from our compatriot's Turkish Cypriots are owners of the Republic of Cyprus ,..IDs..! 80.000 from our compatriot's Turkish Cypriots are owners of the Republic of Cyprus ..passport..! Exactly, a cypriot, either turkish or greek is firstly a cypriot, and that entails equality under the law as well equality in benefits. A solution between the two is possible and respect between the two community is vital, you are totally right. I wasn't referring to Turkish Cypriots, not at ALL. i was ,very specifically refering to mainland Turks that came to the island ILLEGALLY after the invasion. I do not categorise them the same as a Turkish Cypriot, they are not. I am also not implying directly that they should be expelled, but pointing out the fact, that their existence complicates the subject even further. Not to mention the fact that their existence is an attempt to dilute the Turkish Cypriot demographic.

These people live for decades there now or where born there. And came there legally according to the currently controlling government in North Cyprus. If the Turkish settlers would leave Cyprus would be majority Greek again and that's all there is to it. It is a simple question of "In a unification scenario we Greek Cypriots want the greater control" that is masked as a protest against "illegal" settlers while it is just a nationalistic goal. It is not too difficult to imagine. Just imagine a very close neighbour of Cyprus of which almost all of the population came last century: Israel. There were Jewish natives before the 20th century for sure but the vast majority of them settled there from the outside after 1940s. I'm not defending the current settlers in Palestine but the majority Jewish cities. Should these people leave too? Since the controlling government decided that they can live there and get citizenship it is the nearest situation with the Cyprus situation.

@@Devillunar let's not forget that what Turkey did to the island except the invasion is ethnic cleansing. Except some areas of Cyprus that had Turkish Cypriots in the past the vast majority areas that Turkey is currently occupying it brought Turks from mainland Turkey purposely to relocate and change the demographics of the island. The immorality of "moving those peoples" doesn't stop at the Turk. How about all the refugee greek Cypriot?almost Half the greek cypriot population lost there land and home. You may call it nationalism and extreme ideas but the honest truth is that those people want to go back home. The big moral question hence that arises is who has the right to the land. The direct disendant and legal owner of the land, or the people that were brought here in the past by turkey? If i say the first one you will call me immoral for wanting to kick someone from the home he grew up, if i say the second one you can argue that right to the land doesn't exist, since if anyone can come and take your land and keep it illegally then it automatically becomes his..... Because of the above problems all the cypriot solutions (such as the anan plan 2004 or grans montana 2016) included re patriations of turks to turkey, only for those that DIDN'T grew up in the island, hence stayed here for less than 10 or maybe 15 years, which are not enough to trump the right of someone to it's own land. And the greek cypriot that wouldn't get there land back would have received compensation from the common government. (Remember that currently the land of Turkish Cypriots in the republic of Cyprus is still recognised.......)

As guarantor it’s job was to protect the Cypriot constitution. When the second phase of the invasion begin the Cypriot government were back in power, so technically ‘job done’ in terms of fulfilling their guarantor role. They took it further however by instigating phase two of the invasion taking northern Cyprus and ethnically cleansing most of its Greek Cypriot residents. According to international law Turkiye is illegally occupying north Cyprus and illegally importing/encouraging mainland Turks to settle in the occupied territory, similar to what Israel is currently doing in the West Bank. “The United Nations Security Council has challenged the legality of Turkey's action, because Article Four of the Treaty of Guarantee gives the right to guarantors to take action with the sole aim of re-establishing the state of affairs.[117] The aftermath of Turkey's invasion, however, did not safeguard the Republic's sovereignty and territorial integrity, but had the opposite effect: the de facto partition of the Republic and the creation of a separate political entity in the north. “ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_invasion_of_Cyprus

Cyprus was originally Turkish, administered by the British after WW1. The Greek majority population wanted Enosis, were the Island became a part of Greece. Cypriot independence mandated a power split between Greeks and Turks, but this was soon set aside by the Greeks, who violently suppressed the Turkish minority. This forced Turkey's hand and led to the invasion and division of the island.

You do not know the real facts about the history of Cyprus. Cyprus was under occupation by the Otteman Empire. It was never part of Turkey historically. Google about the rich history of Cyprus dating back over 9000 years BC. The Brtish used their most famous of actions, "Divide and Rule" within all countries they wanted to control. Either during the British Empire or as a colonial power governing in a country such as Cyprus. Lets not forget that Cyprus was the last country to gane independence from the British. India etc. were given their independence due to those countries joining the British during the second world war.

Hello to everyone, be well🙂. I'm a little weared from the perspective of the planetary rulers, about this matter. Anglosaxons are partners in so many crimes. Cyprus is whole. End of story. 1) We are talking about Turkey, the only barbaric country on the planet, which hasn't stop being at war from the 12th century. Practically far right wing nationalists, long before the NSDAP. 2) With the blessings and tolerance of US & UK, they invaded a foreign country. On the contrary in Syria and Iraq, along with the friendly Islamic Caliphate, they are very welcome. 3) Albanians, Kosovars, Bosnians, Azers and a few more, they are not only the submissive allies, but almost completely assimilated in every way, after centuries of occupation. The West is under very deep sleep, and cannot understand for what the Neo-Ottomans are capable of doing. 4) Ziya Gökalp. Father of Turkish extremism, and a hot love for today's regime. "The minarets are our bayonets, the domes our helmets, our mosques the barracks, and the faithful our soldiers". Surely know the civilized nations how to choose "buddies", of the highest spiritual floor. 5) I cannot imagine what would have happened, if 11.000.000 of American citizens, were living anywhere outside your borders. But Russians and Serbs are among the bad ones, so you can be ok with your concience, as the most powerful and chosen people of the God.
