The way in which the cytoplasm is divided differs among organisms.
This animal cell has just completed mitosis. It doesn't have a cell wall and its cytoplasm can divide by pinching in two.
At the former spindle equator, a ring of microfilaments is attached to the plasma membrane. This band contracts to form a cleavage furrow.
The furrow deepens until eventually two daughter cells form. This plant cell is encased in a cell wall.
It must build a new cell wall to separate the cytoplasm of the two daughter cells. Vesicles begin to cluster at the former spindle equator.
They contain the materials for a new primary cell wall. The vesicles fuse to form a disklike cell plate. Cellulose deposits build up the plate.
