Took me YEARS to train my Brittish husband to take shoes off as soon as he entred the home (we live in the UK). I knew my training was complete (8 years later) when I collapsed at home and he asked the paramedics to take their shoes off before attending to me... (they didnt, lol)

And in fact it works also without QR code - together with QR code is also sent good old SMS. Works good mainly for old people who dont understand smartphones. Or they can use ID card if the prescription is for them personally.

We are more careful on highways because a Czech highway can turn into a parking lot at any time without notice.

It is way worse in California. The highways are same or worse then ours and people really don't pay attention, text, smoke weed and do whatever else while driving bumper to bumper. Car with both bumpers crushed just driving along are quite common. Nevada was a quite a bit better. Much nicer roads and less stressed and more alert drivers. Our D1 is lovely compared to Californian highways.

Barbaric is how the Japanese (and I) consider wearing shoes in one's house. On Japanese TV, cops chasing the bad guy into a house--without removing shoes--is sure to have viewers gasping in horror. So a decade ago, when I discovered Czechs have the same no-shoes-inside rule as Japanese, I knew I was going to love the Czechlands. Since then I still am learning of similarities between the two. How can two countries located on opposites of the world have so many similar cultural norms?

I would allow cops to chase somebody without removing shoes. But on the other hand, having suspect and cops take off their shoes and borrow slippers in random house they got into, grab their shoes, walk to the back door, put the shoes back on and run again,... well, this is for sure a Monty Python sketch material.

I am from czechia and I have the same opinion on Japan. for us is japanese easy to pronounce, both great animated fairytails, also I found out that the part I am from - Moravia, have a blue printed fabric style (modrotisk) which is really simmilar to japanese Katazome. Also japan gave to our athletic Věra čáslavská Kyokujitsu-shō (Order of the Rising Sun), but she is the only woman which have this degree. And Nagano 1998 for us was incredible xd well and Czech have too a formality way of speaking - for older people, bosses, teachers, cashier, waitress... I could go more and more lul

Excellent and so accurate. I never understood why in the US many people wear their shoes at their house. Bringing an outside filth inside. Many countries customs do not wear shoes in their homes. Japan comes to mind, too. Love your show.

It's inconvenient to take off your shoes, put them back on, take them off again, etc., etc., every time you come in and go out. I'm not saying the practice of taking one's shoes off when entering one's home is a bad idea, but it can be a bit of hassle unless you're _sure_ that you're not going anywhere for awhile.

Doesn't sound like too much hassle to me, spending 4 minutes a day to keep your place cleaner AND allowing your feet to breathe - really, having shoes on all day is pretty bad for them ;) Also, if you're maybe going to a yard and back many times a day, there's nothing easier than having an outside slippers ready at the door...

Chování na dálnici je u nás určitě lepší než jinde, ale ještě lepší je v Německu, třeba když je někdo v rychlejším pruhu rychlejší, dojede předcházející auto, v bezpečné vzdálenosti zpomalí, nelepí se na kufr a počká, až ten před nám uhne. U nás je to tímto způsobem "žádosti o uhnutí pomalejšího auta doprava" o dost víc ve stresu a taky víc nebezpečný. :)

To be fair, there aren't that many public restrooms in Czechia, unless you are in a big city, train/bus station or a shopping mall. And czechs still employ the "quick visit to a restaurant" tactic just like americans. One would be amazed what really makes us all connect, regardless of nationality, mentality and across cultures :D

V obchodních centrech jsou WC zadarmo, ale pucujouj je jako by se tam platilo. Lidi se zouvaj nejen doma. Spousta lidí se přezouvá i na pracovišti. Je to mnohem pohodlnější.

Už i v některých obchoďácích se musí za použití WC platit. A není v nich čisto, bohužel. Obávám se, že do konce tohoto roku se bude muset platit už úplně všude a víc, než 20,-kč. Ale nechci si stěžovat.

@@pavlazakova7769 Mno, tak si nestěžujte. V obchoďácích se svítí, voda teče a čisto tam bývá docela dost, na to jaký je v nich provoz. Pamatuju si veřejné záchodky před 89 a za ty, co máme k dispozici dnes jsem vděčná. Platbu považuji za dobrou připomínku minulosti bez tohoto komfortu.

It was pain to get that project rolling and to break the initial chicken-egg problem ("no bank supports it in apps, no invoice issuer prints it"), bit it was worth the fight and I have a good feeling about saving millions of hours of good life a year... ;-)

It was a bit of an uphill battle in the beginning but once we got the ball rolling, others - banks, integrators and issuers - were joining relatively quickly. I knew the job is done when I saw the QR codes on government's tax forms. I think the main reason why QR Payment succeeded is because we did everything for free (which caused a lot of confusion - especially the banks were waiting for our business model but got none:-))...

Altough I agree with the great usability of the QR code in many situations, I don't like it when they expect you to be online all the time, like in restaurants. Happened to me several times in the US that I went to a pub that had only QR codes on tables and I didn't have local SIM, thus no way to connect to the internet. Was there free wifi since you have to look up the menu online? No. Was the wifi password available? Lol nope. Were waiters annoyed that they had to bring me the paper menu? You bet. So I'm glad that in Czech pubs, old fashioned paper menu is still more common.

It's already illegal to pass on the right in the United States, has been for decades. It's also illegal to travel in the passing lane, meaning to not merge back over to the right. Some states enforce this, some not so much, but many criminals on the run have been caught because they were traveling in the passing lane. The right lane is called the traveling lane, the left is the passing lane. I drive a truck, and on the back it has a sign with an arrow on both sides, the left says passing side, the right says suicide. We also have alot of blind spots.

The road law forces to use the most right lane (not within cities) if it is possible (with exception for special slow vehicle lanes) and overpass on the left. Yes sometimes someone do not obey it but generaly it works fine.

That is a common mistake, actually! It does apply within cities aswell, you might want to recheck your information. Only exception being "souběžná jízda" aka riding in traffic jams, and the obvious - in dedicated lanes before a crossroad.

Člověka vždycky potěší, když slyší, že by si z nás měli brát příklad, aspoň v něčem. Pokud jde o placení v restauraci, nenapadlo by mě, že to v USA může být takový problém.

Jedinej problém při placeni v čechách je, že musíš vypočíst dýško na místě. Platíš 283 k obědu? Je to 300, ale co když je to večeře a je to 883, není 900 málo, přece jen bylo to jídlo a pár hodin piv? A na rozhodnutí máš cca 10 vteřin, když nejsi auťák a pamatuješ si koliks měl čeho a pak to počítáš. V česku se zaokrouhluje takže 900 je ok, ale dnes se očekává, že dáš něco navíc takže si vzpomeneš že je obvyklý 10% 883+83 je kolik? ok cca 960, zaokrouhlim to nahoru nebo ne? dávat 960 je blbý hmm 1000 to nechte. Kurňa to bylo asi moc

@@JessDurden Já dávám podle toho jak moc jsem vytěžoval obsluhu a jak byla kvalitní, pokud si musim nechat donést dejme tomu dvě piva na jednou protože vim, že příště ke stolu přijdou za hodinu i když mám už 30 minut sklenici prázdnou, nějakých 10% je mi uradený, buďto jsem spokojenej a pak při jakýkoliv útratě nemám problém nechat i víc a nebo nejsem a taky nemusim dát vůbec nic, rozhodně nevypočítávám nějakých 10%, všechno se odráží od spokojenosti

Lenko, bohuzel to neni pravda. V USA and vsude jinde na svete je jiz mnoho let normalni, ze se ucet rozdeli. A je to jeste jednodussi nez to jak to Jen popisuje v Cechach. Zde se servirka hned na zacatku zepta jestli chcete ucet rozdelit a pak uz to vse zaridi sama. Nemusite si pamatovat co jste meli. Jen's informace jsou neaktualni mnoho let. Se zachody to take neni docela pravda. Je pravda, ze tu ve mestech neni mnoho verejnych zachodu, ale nemusite se vloudit do restauraci. Vsude v restauraci vas radi nechaji jit na perfektne ciste zachody, jeste vam ukazou kde jsou a podekuji vam s usmevem kdyz odchazite. A muzete pouzit kolik papiru chcete a ne dva ctverecky, ktere vam nevrla hajzlbaba prideli.

@@JessDurden Dávat v česku velký dýško je blbost.. Jasně, když jsem se službama nadmíru spokojen tak hodim nějakou tu korunu navíc, ale nemyslim si že bych se měl stydět když nedám. U nás jsou servírky a číšníci placeni normálně, a řekl bych že i dobře (záleží na podniku). V USA zaměstnavatel nemusí platit minimální mzdu servírkám, a jiným zaměstnancům kteří dostávají dýška. V některých státech dostávají dokonce zaplaceno míň jak polovinu minimální mzdy... Tam si myslím že dýška jako 10% a výš mají smysl, a jsou i očekávány.

I 100% agree with the public restrooms. And also in the Czech restaurants the restrooms are much cleaner and smell good. I like their toilet flushing system, small button for number 1, large button for number 2 LOL, it has to save some water, don't you think? Dekuji za vase videa!

Grocery carts. In Czechia we found the carts are always available at the front entrance because every customer always puts it back because they want the Czech Crown they put in the cart when they picked it up. It’s genius.

The thing with czech highways is that we pass on the left side, because right line is for slower drivers and left lane is for faster drivers (middle lane for mid fast drivers etc.) so it’s kinda more natural. But great video, crazy how many things we take for granted.

Ahoj! Dobré video. Díky! We have all these things in Germany, too. I've been to Prague only once and loved it. One thing that comes to my mind, that I loved in another country: garbage connection at night in Spain and therefore not blocking traffic at the busy daylight hours.

Thanks for the video :) Can't agree with everything (e.g. public toilets are often really scarce to non-existent in many Czech towns, maybe except for the malls, and I'm really not a fan of QR codes, especially when they're being pushed on me with no alternative) but I couldn't agree more with the "no shoes at home" rule! :) I mean, I'm not that tidy and I'm pretty far from being obsessed with hygiene - but wearing shoes at home is just wrong on so many levels (bringing dirt inside, making your feet sweaty and prone to athlete's foot due to having shoes on all day) I don't get how it's not a norm worldwide...

The QR payments are a godsend, it's so much easier to scan a code on an invoice, or your friend's phone (or even after doing your taxes electronically) and simply confirm to send the payment via banking app instead of having to manually type in the account number, the exact amount, or even additionally the _variabilní symbol_ and _specifický symbol_ and check everything five times to make sure you're sending it to the correct recipient with correct identifying information. And then realizing you forgot to fill in the _konstantní symbol_ and live in fear that the Ministry of Finance won't be able to correctly assign the payment and your tax debt will start collecting penalties (I'm totally not speaking from personal experience, no, not at all....).

With the alcohol limit, it always have to reflect the nation mindset. In Czechia or Slovakia, I think the 0 tolerance is a good thing. Living past year in Finland with 0.5 per mille tolerance, I don't feel like the road would be dangerous at all. People driving safely and most likely even more safer when they had a beer. I like that occasionally I can go to party in remote areas, have a few beers, then just have last hour of party without drinking alcohol and drive safely home without fear from loosing my driving license. But I am sure that it would be heavily misused in CZ or SK.

We don't really have "zero tolerance" as it says. There is about a 0.2 limit if you deny that you drank alcohol before driving. It has something to do with physiology (can't remember exactly, feel free to google it). Luckily it is not a common knownledge, because I agree that it could cause more harm.

The things I would like to implement from some foreign countries relate to driving. - I like the German concept of the main road being always straight. Some intersections can get quite confusing with the main road being in weird shape. - I really love turning right in intersection on the red light when there is no traffic. There are permanent green arrows in some countries and it can work really well. - and in Sweden I got used to multi-lane roundabouts. The multi-lane roundabouts in Czechia are often really poorly constructed, but the concept can definitely work really well, if done properly. Oh and I would love if people formed emergency lanes in traffic jams like they do in Austria or Germany...

A přitom je zajímavé, že směrově diferencované semafory se všemi těmi šipkami převzalo socialistické Československo právě z kapitalistického devizového Mnichova. Jeden semafor uprostřed křižovatky a odbočování na červenou by byl tak trochu krok o 70 let zpátky. Kde je třeba a je to možné, tam může být pro odbočení doprava samostatný bypass, kde semafory nejsou vůbec, ale to pak je lepší, když ten bypass ústí do samostatného jízdního pruhu. A aby tam, kde hlavní ulice zahýbá do pravého úhlu a z vnější strany se k ní připojují nějaké bezvýznamné slepé uličky, byla jedna z těch slepých uliček hlavní jen proto, aby hlavní nezatáčela? To by fakt nebyla šťastná koncepce. Takto nesmyslně to, doufám, nemají ani v tom Německu. Rozhodně je lepší, pokud hlavní ulici tvoří ty větve křižovatky, kterými probíhá silnice vyšší kategorie nebo hlavní dopravní zátěž.

Sadly, building new multi-lane roundabouts is banned, because they are deemed "dangerous" and new can be build only as turbo-roundabouts which are on the other hand more effective (but mostly you can't exit in the same direction you came from)

When the sign "HIGHWAY" appeared, I was a bit puzzled what on earth can be said about Czech highways :D But yeah, you have to overtake cars from the left, it's the law, but sometimes there is someone who doesn't care. And a lot of people block the left lane. Anyway, about the taking your shoes off.... Fun fact. Driving left lane for no reason is punishable by about 80$ fine. Overtaking that car from right side by about 400$ fine. You just do not overtake from right. People flash long range lights, people use a honk, people tailgate, but people do not overtake from right side.

Yeah, I live near Brno, the fact that Prague doesn't have this yet is annoying every time I come. :D Brno/IDS JMK also has the universal tickets you can use repeatedly and where you can choose how many zones you're travelling through right now - the flexibility of that is also something I miss in Prague, where you have to buy specific tickets and then you're stuck with those. The universal tickets are fantastic e.g. for day trips.

I moved to Prague just over a year ago and I don't find their driving too bad in town. But on the highway, they will often drive up your ass! Very annoying. The QR code things is very cool. According to rules is left lane for passing slower cars only if you outside town. But so many people disrespect this rule and hold another drivers. Than you drive your car on highway and see two slow cars go side by side and you can't pass them. It's crazy. I blame this people for many car accidents in Czech.

Clevelander here. Ironically, we do have trams (RTA, or Rapid Transit Authority, though granted the network is mostly buses now. They used to be streetcars) and "castles" (Franklin Castle is more of a mansion, Squire's Castle is just a shell now, Loveland Castle is a bit of a drive away, Stan Hwyet Hall is in Akron but legitimately castle-like). Also QR codes have really picked up steam here but I do get annoyed seeing them at restaurants when I just want to see a menu.

We are pretty fast at accepting and implementing "gadgety" tech stuff. I usually don´t carry cash around, I pay tram ticket with a credit card, QR codes - no comment. I can´t wait for more credit card self-service petrol stations. The highway... Yeh, there are still many idiots out there but generally a good idea, overtake only from the left side. But genuinely, I felt absolutely safe and comfortable when driving in Germany (not here). Traffic lights- we should put them lower, I am tall and I have to do some serious equilibristic to see those. As far as cleanliness of bathrooms, the gas stations can be sometimes questionable, but everything else, the chain fast foods, restaurants or dept. stores cannot be cleaner. AND THEY ARE ALL FREE!!! Hi Jen, don't you have or plan to have a video on restaurant waiter tips on your channel? What are the differences in the USA and in the Czech Republic (or in Europe), etc. In the last year, I've been seeing articles on FB very often where people complain about how waiters or delivery services get small tips from people. Sometimes I try to comment that it would be good for the employees to receive a normal salary + tips, so that they are not dependent only on tips. When I try to explain how things are here in the Czech Republic, I am usually met with misunderstanding and abuse, which makes me sad. Maybe if you could explain it in your own words and show the differences it would be more understandable? Thanks a lot and thanks for your videos

Interesting, I had the absolutely opposite experience while driving in the US. From my point of view the Americans were much more docile drivers than Czechs... I've seen only like 2 car crashes during the whole 9.000 km roadtrip throughout the West, both really simple bumps, while it took only a single drive along the famous D1 from Prague to Brno after the return to see like six of those... :))

No, paying after is dumb. If you use a card, you can fill as much as you want. If you need to prepay, it is good it wont give you more. Pumps dont have to worry about leaving without paying.

In Czech republic pumps aren't worry about somebody leaving without paying, it never happens. Maybe because in Czech republic it isn't common that seller takes your card information to take your money later.

I am Czech living permanently in the US. I know how it works in Czech Republic. Add the size of the US, people of all background, crime and yes, they would be leaving without paying. The pre pay is not for the buyer protection but for the seller. Another bonus of it is - you use your card and you never have to go inside. Paying at a restaurant - I usually leave cash for a tip so they don't get it taxed. Most of them have 1 bill and you add the tip and you write the total.

Some, or most of the things you mentioned are relevant for most of Europe or the EU at least, not only Czechia. Things like passing another car on the left (specified in the traffic law), public transport, taking the shoes off, paying for plastic bags and QR codes are pretty much the same accross the continent. Multisport card exists in 6 countries I think, unfortunately these are not interconnected - the only country abroad where you can use your card is Slovakia, and at the same time Slovak MSCs work in Czechia. 🙂

But the man at the reception said we had to go to the public restroom we didn't understand why? But the woman who cares for the restroom had a nice place for dogs with water and food. It was nice. She didn't want any money! We gave her a tip.
