Was in Rio De Janeiro last week for the 1st time (7 days). I went on a couple 12 hour tours and drove through the state of rio up to the blue caves, redeemer statue, sugar loaf mountains, drove through favellas where they filmed fast & furious & michael jacksons "they don't care about us", the colorful stairs etc... I didn't attend the carnival but It was cool though I can't complain.

Wow ... some good footage right here. And that's coming from a guy who has been to Rio many times. I am guilty of mostly hanging in the wealthier areas. I have never been to Madureira. From what I hear, it's the spot where you find Black folks at and you get more of a taste of Black Brazilian culture. There are several samba schools based there. One thing for sure, it is hood! On my first trip to Rio a local brother who had a business on the Copa beach took a few of us to his hood which is near the big soccer stadium. As he warned us it was very different. Prices were much cheaper and we did party but more in a way that the locals partied. If you want to go to a Brazilian hood folks, make sure you go with a local. Now if your Port is good, you might be able to go alone. But having someone local with you is better because they can introduce you to a few people and point out places to checkout. Many of the hippest places are not well known except by locals.
